Neither DAO or DA2 are what I would call realistic in terms of their artstyles, so I don't see why people are citing DAO as an example of the realism the OP was talking about.

The Eclipse engine was never a very detailed graphics engine, which is why characters in both DAO and DA2 tended to have a bit of a plasticy look to them.   Now in regards to the Frostbyte engine, which is quite capable of photorealism, I would lean towards more style and less toward realism.

anyone who prefers DA2 to DAO's style needs to have their eyes plucked out.

Can we have Tomb Raider 2013 level of realism, please?
I just can't stop staring at Lara's face. So pretty...*.*

"Realism" can take a hike. Every game I ever played that tried to be realistic came out looking incredibly ugly.

I laugh when people say DAO was realistic because it really wasn't, I prefer DA2 stylized look because if you compare Isabela from DA2 to her DA1 its a no contest which one looks better but other thing like evironmental texture have always been a pronlem for DA. If you want photorealism then look at Witcher not DAO. DA2 looks better plain and simple aside from those reused dungeons of course lol

Well, here's the thing: a preference suggests an opinion and opinions are subjective.  So whatever anyone prefers is just that, an opinion.  Opinions can't be right or wrong, and they're most definitely not factual.

"I laugh when people say DAO was realistic because it really wasn't"

Was it PHOTOrealistic? No. Was it absolutely more realistic then DA2? Yes.

Besides, here's another thing about the Origins artstyle I like more then DA2's style. The blood. It's much more realistic and cool looking in Origins. I've actually noticed that there's in fact 2 level of blood splatter. You have the splotchy speckled look, but if you've killed and attacked a ton of times without any way to clear yourself with a load screen or something (like 25 melee kills in a row), you start looking actually drenched in it. Like, jumped in a bathtub of blood. It's really noticeable on light-colored leather armors and Cailan's golden armor, because the blood is really visible on those. That looks awesome when you get like that, because it really does look like you've killed an army.

DA2... I don't think it has the second bloodier splatter DA:O had. Then again, the blood in general looks a lot worse then it did in Origins, so I guess I'm not surprised.

Photorealism is the most boring thing ever. I prefer an artist's brush over a mechanical camera.

In general, photorealism like Crysis needs ultra expensive new hardware, therefore I have no need for it.
Personally I would be ok with DA:O or Neverwinter Nights 2 graphics as long as the game is interesting.

If you mean he looks prettier than Lara...wut? O.o
If you mean that the style of Crysis is more realistic than TR, then you are absolutely right.

In any case, that would be too realistic for me. I don't want them to look like real people. Crysis, BF4 and all those games look really ugly to me. So as far as realism goes, Tomb Raider 2013 is about as far as they should take it, IMO.

Not really. I can run Battlefield 3 on high settings (1920x1080, 50-60 fps) on a custom-built mid-range PC that I now value at about $550. Since DA3 runs on an updated version of this engine, I think that's a good comparison.

DA:I is next gen, so there's no excuse to portray subpar graphics allegating low memory on consoles anymore, the PS4 allegedly equips 8 GB of ram

Release of Battlefield 3 was in 2011. Your $550 PC was much more expensive in those days and I don't want to wait two years after release of the game.

I know "grim 'n gritty" is very much hip in pop culture these days, but I'd say drop the grittiness altogether. If something's lighthearted or kinda cheesy it can still send powerful messages and it doesn't have to revel in sadness and darkness all the time like the majority of today's "serious" videogames.

Want a movie example? Django Unchained. Far from being gritty, it is violent but full of all that quirky 70s exploitation style that Tarantino loves so much. It sends its message without any doubt but never take itself too serious like, say, the Nolan batfilms.

I thrust BioWare and Gaider's talent either way, but as far as overall style goes, I'd really like to see something against the current tendence.
