i think as long as the color saturation isn't tuned high anything works. the colors need to be dull in order to convey a bleak and gloomy story

Chrono Cross is often extremely depressed. It makes you feel powerless in front of insurmountable odds and shows you how your mere existence is shameful in itself. The world is a sad place that has lost much of its magic and smiles, with armed conflict threatening the lives of all the archipelago's (usually quite racist) inhabitants.

The game's looks?

And the colours work just fine, really =)

Gritty realism fits Dragon Age far more. Probably why I think Origins looks better then 2 even if it's technically far inferior graphically, because Origins had a more realistic and gritty look that fit the series. Not to say that I always prefer realistic graphics. I just like a graphic style that fits the setting, and for DA, gritty and realistic is it.

I actually thought the exact opposite.

Dragon Age is not a very dark or gritty universe, not at all, certainly not next to series such as The Witcher, which is far more "doom and gloom" than Dragon Age is.

Besides, "gritty" and "edgy" can actually go rather well with a heavily stylized art direction. Just look at Dishonored, a rather serious, dark, gritty and edgy game, but very "cartoonish" and stylized.

I think I rather see the Dragon Age art style into that direction.

Touche! hehe. Naw. But my Hawke ignored gravity and the laws of physics constantly, though.

Yaaay my thread is still going

Anyways....I just wanted to point out that stylized does not always mean "anime" or "Cartoony"

There is a balance to strike, for instance

just giving a rendered example (I would use Darksiders 2 but damn that is way too stylized compared to previous DA games....also did you know that while Vigil closed down the developers were nearly all hired by Crytek to open their American studio??? Can you imagine what they could do with Cryengine 3??)
