Interesting things to note -
- Set in Orlais. Empress Celene I appears to be the protagonist.

- Centers on the Mage/Templar conflict and beginnings of an elven uprising.

- Others characters of note include Grand Duke Gaspard who appears to intially follow Celene I but begins to doubt that her approach to dealing with the issues Orlais faces is the right one. Seems to be set to go head to head with her for leadership of Orlais. There's also Celene's elven handmaiden (&spymaster&lover), Briala, who also appears to play a big role.

- April 2014 release (might hint at DA3 being released around the same time or soon after?)

- First DA novel to not be penned by David Gaider. Patrick Weekes, who seems to have exclusively worked with the Mass Effect franchise in the past, is taking over. I'm interested to see how well he does but am curious as to why Gaider isn't continuing to write. I'd hazard a guess that DA3 and other side projects are taking up most of his attention. It could be something entirely different. In any case, it's gonna take some adjusting.

Here's the description from Tor's website:

Empress Celene of Orlais rose to the throne of the most powerful nation in Thedas through wisdom, wit, and ruthless manipulation. Now, the empire she has guided into an age of enlightenment is threatened from within by imminent war between the templars and the mages, even as rebellion stirs among the downtrodden elves To save Orlais, Celene must keep her hold on the throne by any means necessary.

Fighting with the legendary skill of the Orlesian Chevaliers , Grand Duke Gaspard has won countless battles for the empire and the empress But has he fought in vain? As the Circle fails and chaos looms, Gaspard begins to doubt that Celene’s diplomatic approach to the mage problem or the elven uprisings will keep the empire safe. Perhaps it is time for a new leader, one who lives by the tenets of the Chevalier’s Code, to make Orlais strong again.

Briala has been Celene’s handmaid since the two of them were children, subtly using her position to help improve the lives of elves across Orlais. She is Celene’s confidante, spymaster, and lover, but when politics force the empress to choose between the rights of Briala’s people and the Orlesian throne, Briala must in turn decide where her true loyalties lie.

Alliances are forged and promises broken as Celene and Gaspard battle for the throne of Orlais But in the end, the elves who hide in the forests or starve in the alienages may decide the fate of the masked empire.

Very pretty cover art. I'm always pro city elves sticking it to the Man, so it sounds interesting.

Wait...what's the....
Was it some really secret project?
Never heard anything about this.

Well , I'm relieved...I was very scared of a book written by another author but ...Patrick Weekes!
Just yeah.............!

And one whole year to wait..../cry.

And elves are finally rebelling...but one year to wait to have the book /cry some more.

Hmmm...I am intrigued ^_^. It'll be...odd, the book not being written by David Gaider, but I have no qualms about giving Patrick Weekes a shot. Plus the plot of the book, so far, sounds very interesting

I'm definitely interested in it. Seems like we'll be in for more of a political ride this time around. I think this will set the stage for the Orlais we experience in DA3 (reading the synopsis again makes it seem like a prequel to what we'll eventually face with these uprisings beginning to form.)

Still, April 2014 is a long way away! haha.

Interesting implications for DA:I given the timing of release. It implies to me that  either DA:I will not resolve the current chaos  or yes, it is a prequel...

Still, it does me a lot of good to see the author being a Bioware writing and not someone like Dietz. Not that I would have minded Grand Duke Gascard peeing in Celene's vase and eating her crossaints. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/whistling.png[/smilie]

I think this announcement means that DA:I probably won't come out UNTIL this book is released or after the book.

Or Dragon Age 3 isn't coming out until the first quarter of next year.

Or DA3's release and this book have nothing to do with each other and DA3 releases whenever its good and ready. And this book might just be backstory  or a prequel of sorts to the events of DA3? So the book doesn't end up resolving the Orlesian Civil War stuff but just gives some backstory to it and sets the table for DA3 to have it resolved. Not unlike The Stolen Throne gave a bunch of backstory to Loghain and the Ferelden Civil War.

Kind of "meh" on the subject matter of the book, at least given the small blurb. I'm not quite sold on Dragon Age as a setting being able to pull of the political intrigue angle yet.

It sounds more to me that it will be set before DA:I.  Some of the stuff described in thè summary sounds almost like its happening concurrently with some events of Asunder.

Yeah, it seems to mesh with Asunder pretty well and the whole Orlesian Civil War thing was also hinted at in those leaked surveys and plot synopses from last year.

Yes, It sounds like it's taking place just after or during Asunder.
In Asunder ,Celene is lured to Halamshiral by Gaspard (elves are rebelling over there), and the Duke start the civil war.
So the conflict was already taking place in the book.

I read, and greatly enjoyed, Patrick's "The Palace Job" so I'm relieved to know the book is in good hands.

If David couldn't do it, Patrick is the best choice.

Looking forward to it! :wizard:

This sound really great but one whole year... I need my DA fix now!
Well, hopefully this means the game is more than a year away too.

I wonder if this book will have any ex companion cameo...
Like Shale and Wynne in Asunder.
But who could get mixed up with Orlais politics?
