I wonder if this book will have any ex companion cameo...
Like Shale and Wynne in Asunder.
But who could get mixed up with Orlais politics?

Leliana seems almost guaranteed.
I'll be reading this when it comes out.  I know Gaider said he had no current plans to work on another novel.  Good to see someone else on the team picking it up.

First DA novel to not be penned by David Gaider. Patrick Weekes, who seems to have exclusively worked with the Mass Effect franchise in the past, is taking over. I'm interested to see how well he does but am curious as to why Gaider isn't continuing to write. I'd hazard a guess that DA3 and other side projects are taking up most of his attention. It could be something entirely different. In any case, it's gonna take some adjusting.

I'd have liked to do another book, but I simply didn't have the time. Thankfully, the book's in good hands. Patrick is on the DA team now, and is a great writer. I suspect that if you liked my books you'll like what he's done/doing with this one.

Leliana.
Bodahn and Sandal.
Aveline's got Orlesian connections
Sebastian, maybe.  Chantry connections means Orlesian connections, royal status to fit in at court.
Morrigan if you pay attention to the epilogue card from Origins.  Probably not.
Loghain ends up in Orlais in some epilogue cards too IIRC.  Really wouldn't bet on this one - aside from everything else, I wouldn't expect him to live this long based on what we were told in Origins.

The more I hear about Gaspard, the more I like him. Still know very little but I think we might get along.

Then I'm sold. I've loved your books, and look forward to seeing what Mr Weekes does with it.

That's interesting. Has Patrick ever been on the Dragon Age writing team? I thought only Sylvia went on the Dragon Age team post-ME3.

Interesting things to note -
- Set in Orlais. Empress Celene I appears to be the protagonist.

- Centers on the Mage/Templar conflict and beginnings of an elven uprising.

- Others characters of note include Grand Duke Gaspard who appears to intially follow Celene I but begins to doubt that her approach to dealing with the issues Orlais faces is the right one. Seems to be set to go head to head with her for leadership of Orlais. There's also Celene's elven handmaiden (&spymaster&lover), Briala, who also appears to play a big role.

- April 2014 release (might hint at DA3 being released around the same time or soon after?)

- First DA novel to not be penned by David Gaider. Patrick Weekes, who seems to have exclusively worked with the Mass Effect franchise in the past, is taking over. Beautiful cover and an intriguing POV.  Elves?  Yes!!  Bards (Leliana)?  Yes!!  I hope we'll learn more about the Stone under Orlais, as well :D

Man I got some catching up to do. I have the first two books at home just waiting for me to finish reading my current book (unrelated to DA). This book looks awesome, and I have high hopes for it since Patrick Weekes is the author :D

Well, at least it seems he might be more nuanced than just a power hungry, blood thirsty would be tyrant which was the first impression I got.

I've realized something about this that bugs me intensely. However, I won't post that here, as it's tangential and could derail the thread. I will instead make a new topic.

That actually sounds pretty neat. First DA book to really pique my interest.

I mean, um. Sorry David Gaider.

Interesting implications for DA:I given the timing of release. It implies to me that  either DA:I will not resolve the current chaos  or yes, it is a prequel...

It sounds more to me that it will be set before DA:I.  Some of the stuff described in thè summary sounds almost like its happening concurrently with some events of Asunder.

Yeah, it seems to mesh with Asunder pretty well and the whole Orlesian Civil War thing was also hinted at in those leaked surveys and plot synopses from last year.

I dunno if it has any implications on DA:I other than exposition on the Orlesian Civil War and Elven Rebellion (possible plots I think) as well as to show a more human side to the characters we might be dealing with like the Stolen Throne and Calling did with Loghain and Duncan respectively.

More on the release date; It could be that the book comes out after the game and gives us a little insight into the eccentricities of the characters we meet...er like I said before, but makes an otherwise good choice into a great choice.

Leliana: Bard/Spy for the Divine. She could be looking around for people who want to end the war quickly

Isabela: Isabela gets involved with all kinds of people and what she did with Hawke (in regards to Duke Prosper) might cause her to get at least a mention or two.

Aveline: If you brought Aveline along with you in Mark of the Assassin you find out her family has some "underground" ties of some sort, it could have some effect we can't forsee.

Zevran: He's an assassin, someone might need one idk :P

Leliana's a given, though if this is concurrent with Asunder she may be busy.

I think Isabela is busy gallivanting with Alistair and Varric in Tevinter at the moment.

The whole side quest was one hell of a tease, I'd love to see more of it explored by Aveline.

I think Zevran is doing more running than killing fore hire these days.

Yeah Isabela is a bit of a crap shoot because of the comics, but I think Zevran could be doing anything he pleases. After all if you help him with the Crows chasing him he shows up during the final battle. He had time for that:P

But to be honest I really don't want companions to show up in this book. I dunno I love my companions, those four rank pretty high on my awesome list, but idk I inda want this completely disconnected from our stories, I want our initial interactions with Celene to be completely new. Now if one of the new companions that haven't been released show up, I'm okay with that :D

Kind of "meh" on the subject matter of the book, at least given the small blurb. I'm not quite sold on Dragon Age as a setting being able to pull of the political intrigue angle yet.

Weekes is a different author from DG, however, and hasn't been involved in DA to date. I'm not sure about his chops re: political intrigue, but he's been involved in some very emotionally gratifying (from most fan POVs) aspects of the ME series, so I think he could do a good job (at least, potentially).

He wrote Jack, Kasumi and Mordin, for example. He also wrote Rannoch and Tuchanka (which IMO were the only two thematically consistent parts of ME3 with ME1/ME2).

None of this is to say that he would write a good political plot. But (at least IMO) he's one of my favourite Bioware writers, along with Lucas Kristjanson.

The Palace Job proved that Patrick Weekes has talent in writing Fantasy stories. Plus he works in the same studio that makes Dragon Age and is friends with the DA writing team and has even been helping them with Dragon Age III ever since ME3 wrapped up.

So I'm not really worried about The Masked Empire being DA's equivalent to ME Deception or anything. Weekes is a good writer who'll do the franchise justice.
