Oooh! Another novel? At first I was disappointed that it wasn't David Gaider but I love Patrick Weekes' work so far, so I'm excited for this! Looks good!

Does anyone else not keep up with the EU stuff? Is it going to make the game/world storyline more difficult to follow?

I highly doubt they'll write the games with any sort of expectation that people will have read the books.  The relevant stuff will presumably be explained in game.

I don't think DA:O suffered if you hadn't read The Stolen Throne

Indeed. There'll probably be a few instances where book/comic readers will be able to go "Hey, there's that guy from Asunder!" for example, but nothing that'd alienate those who only play the games.

I look forward to reading Mr. Weekes' novel. Sounds very interesting.

That's interesting. Has Patrick ever been on the Dragon Age writing team? I thought only Sylvia went on the Dragon Age team post-ME3.

I think Patrick Weekes was on the Dragon Age team when he first joined Bioware and DAO was in early stages of production.

So he would have been hanging around when they were creating the world.

A fair point. I never kept up with all the ME EU stuff either and that never diminished my experience of the games.

This is fantastic news for me! Not a big fan of comics, as I feel they can often be way too fast paced and it's harder to get into a character's mind and their motivations, something that can easily be done in a novel. So I haven't read the Alistair/Varric/Isabela storylines they've been writing.

Read all three of the DA novels so far, was pleased. Hopefully Weekes can match Gaider's work - his work on ME3 instills confidence.

Orlesian Loghain? I could get on board with that.

From the summary it seems like he could be more of a Robb Stark-like figure than a powerhungry potential tyrant. The code of the Chevaliers emphasizes honor above all but the commoners are frequently subject to abuse by the members of the order. Someone like Gaspard who's rallying under adherance to the Chevalier code and dealing with the Mages, Templars, and elves rather than playing politics could have popular support among the people.

One thing that I really like about how Patrick Weekes handles characterization is that he takes a character's defining trait (Mordin's work with the Genophage, Miranda's support of Cerberus) and then turns it on its head (Mordin caring that the Genophage keeps the Krogan population stable rather than wiping the species out all together, Miranda joining Cerberus to help protect her sister).

We've only really heard about Celene from third party sources like her plan to forge an alliance with Ferelden by marrying Cailan, or her and Duke Prosper's plan to buy information about Ben-Hasrath agents in Orlais in Mark of the Assassin.  We know that she's a crafty politician but seeing her through the eyes of someone who's known her from childhood is going to be really interesting.

First DA novel to not be penned by David Gaider. Patrick Weekes, who seems to have exclusively worked with the Mass Effect franchise in the past, is taking over. I'm interested to see how well he does but am curious as to why Gaider isn't continuing to write. I'd hazard a guess that DA3 and other side projects are taking up most of his attention. It could be something entirely different. In any case, it's gonna take some adjusting.

I'd have liked to do another book, but I simply didn't have the time. Thankfully, the book's in good hands. Patrick is on the DA team now, and is a great writer. I suspect that if you liked my books you'll like what he's done/doing with this one.

Patrick Weekes is on the DA team now? That's the best news I've heard all week.

Who's the artist for that great cover, does anyone here know? That Tor page doesn't say.

The book cover is all kinds of awesome and the design of the Dragon Age words is not lost on me (it basically spells Dragon Age 3 if you ignore the arabesque on the right).

But the book coming in April 2014 is all but confirmation that the game is coming out around that time as well. From the short synopsis you can see that it's about the larger Orlesian state of affairs during Asunder and just before the game begins.

At least with Dragon Age Books, their releases tends to be independent of that of the game.

Stolen Throne and The Calling both came months before DAO, and Asunder came out almost a year after DA2.

Well, both of those made sense considering the place in the timeline.

True.  The point I'm trying to make is that we shouldn't read too much into what the release date for Masked Empire may imply about the release of DA:III.

It still sucks that we'll have to wait a year before we can read the book, of course.

Mr. Gaider's books and comics have been so enjoyable, but I'm not worried one bit about Mr. Weekes stepping in to do the next novel. I loved his work in Mass Effect and am eager to see what he does in The Masked Empire.
How can they have the cover and title a year+ before the book is due? Seems weird.<_<

Patrick Weekes! Yay!

If there is anyone I know in the BW teams that I'd trust with DA writing other than Gaider, it'd be Weekes.

This is happy news!

How do we know this isn't a prequel to planned DLC or an expansion? We can't automatically make this assumption.

If I have to wait an extra year for DA:I, but it'll be awesome, it's a worthy trade off, especially given what happened with ME3. I don't mind the wait. I mean, just look at some of the other big titles, long wait just gives more anticipation.

During Asunder, the main characters hear tales of how Celene went to deal with the elven rebellion, was ambushed by Gaspard and separated from the seat of her power, Val-Royeaux. Afterwards, the Mage-Templar war begins.
The Mage-Templar war, elven rebellion and Orlesian Civil War strike me as the main sources of conflict we must deal with in "Inquisition" which makes it, I believe, safe to assume this book will come out before DAI.
Certainly, we could deal with the Mage-Templar war in the main game and the other two in an expansion but I doubt it given the fact they happen at the same time and in the same country.
