So is the cover girl going to be symbolic of the amount of character customization we're going to get for DA3?

Indeed! According to the Tor description, "Alliances are forged and promises broken as Celene and Gaspard battle
for the throne of Orlais But in the end, the elves who hide in the forests or starve in the alienages may decide the fate of the masked empire."
This is very exciting

The Dalish elves, sure. They have weapons and armor and are probrably skilled in guerrila tactics.
But the alienage elves? They have no equipment and no training whatsoever. If they try to attack, Celene and Gaspard will likely put their differences aside and crush them. And even if one side recruited them and gave them weapons and armors, there's still the matter of them not knowing the first thing about military tactics.
Maybe there is a choice in "Inquisition"? The dalish elves want to kill or expel all orlesians and take the land for themselves while the alienage elves just want to be treated with equal dignity and respect? Or maybe you'll recruit them in Celene/Gaspard's name.

So it's quite possible that Masked Empire could be a viewpoint sequel for Asunder.
That's what I'm thinking too. It certainly sounds like it runs parallel to the Asunder novel and will explain what was going on back in Orlais whilst Evangeline 'n' co were away.

And then qunari will attack, the remaining 2 Old Gods will be corrupted at once, and something else unforeseen will happen, all at the same time...

First DA novel to not be penned by David Gaider. Patrick Weekes, who seems to have exclusively worked with the Mass Effect franchise in the past, is taking over. I'm interested to see how well he does but am curious as to why Gaider isn't continuing to write. I'd hazard a guess that DA3 and other side projects are taking up most of his attention. It could be something entirely different. In any case, it's gonna take some adjusting.
I'd have liked to do another book, but I simply didn't have the time. Thankfully, the book's in good hands. Patrick is on the DA team now, and is a great writer. I suspect that if you liked my books you'll like what he's done/doing with this one.
Wait, Sheryl Chee, David Gaider, Mary Kirby, Lukas Kristjanson, and Patrick Weekes are on Dragon Age 3?
This is going to be one of the best written BioWare titles to date.
::fingers crossed the other departments bring it just as heavy as the writers. DA2's got some great character work that saddled with a lot of baggage from the level guys, graphics guys, and gameplay guys::

From the summary, I think it's safe to say this will be a prequel of DA:I, maybe setup for the core story of the game. Not written by Gaider, hmmm? I wonder why they pick Weekes as the writer for this one. He worked on Mass Effect story before, and is a newcomer to DA world. I thought they would pick someone who's more familiar with DA's story, someone from DA:O writing team for instance. But we will see.
It might be because he's been published before, successfully I might add as I hear his book is quite good, but I can't say for sure since I haven't read it myself.

I initially thought it was a symbol for how close the betrayal could be, just didn't think it was important enough to mention lol.

I say that as someone who has enjoyed David Gaider's novels and comics; being enthusiastic about a new writer for a DA novel is no poor reflection on Mr. Gaider. It's just that Mr. Weekes has been my favourite writer in Mass Effect and I'm really excited about the prospect of him working on Dragon Age.
