I really have to wonder about this, when Mass effect got a new guy for the novel it went reaaaal bad. I like both Drew karpyshyn and David Gaiders novels and love the worlds they take place in, i really hope this new guy knows the lore inside out and it gets properly fact checked before going public.
The "new guy" they got to write Mass Effect: Deception (I - perhaps forunately - have never read it) was a complete outsider to BioWare who didn't bother doing his homework from what I've read.
Patrick, on the other hand, has worked within BioWare for several years and has proven himself to be a terrific and engaging writer whose work is always consistent with established lore. He's also now working on Inquisition, so he'll have had plenty of time to familiarise himself with the Dragon Age mythos if he wasn't acquainted with it already.
Being a good games writer doesn't always translate well when writing novels, but Patrick also has book-writing experience. He penned "The Palace Job" which (once again, while I haven't read it) is by all accounts a captivating, witty tale down the line of Terry Pratchett's work.
So, in short, we've got every reason to be optimistic about The Masked Empire.
He might be within Bioware but not on Dragon Age, so i will stay cautious. What parts of Mass effect did he write anyway?
As I said, he's been working on Dragon Age (probably for quite a few months now), but caution's always a good default position I suppose.
He wrote Mordin, Jack, Tali and Kasumi and also wrote the Rannoch and Tuchunka sequences in ME3. So, a pretty good resume in my opinion.

And it will only make me want to play an elf all the more.

They are the best parts of Mass Effect, apart from Rannoch....i wont derail the thread but i thought that whole story made the quarians look really bad in the flash back part, they could of balanced out that conflict a little better.

Question I really hope someone from BW can answer. When is the release date? I have seen April 2014 (like the OP says) but I have also seen July 2013 on other sites.
Almost certainly April next year. That's the date given by the publisher, they're hardly likely to get their own publication date wrong in an announcement

You never know. But, why would B&N give a fake release date? They get a list of set release dates, release dates that should be real.King Cousland wrote...

Depends if he was responsible for the white-washing of the conflicts, really.

Not to mention the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC for ME2.

As long as he does a thorough research on the lore of Dragon Age, he should be fine to write an immensely enjoyable book about our favourite universe. (Sorry Mass Effect, you have some good parts, but you can't hold a candle to Dragon Age. *if someone doesn't read the IMO in-between the lines, tough luck!*)

So why do I have a strong feeling either Shianni or Lanaya are going to be in this book.
The story might not feature them, since Shianni as Bann is murdered by human bigots, and Lanaya can be killed if The Warden sides with the werewolves. Although Wynne and Shale appeared in Asunder, so you could be right.

That epilogue card never shows up without mods, so I think they'd be even more relaxed about ignoring it than usual.

Heh, I was just going to say "several epilogue cards that do show up got ignored, so that's hardly a problem"

If your warden's Bann of the Alienage, does anyone else think Shianni becomes Bann after the warden disappears?

I would love to see Shianai again. She's one of those minor characters that I hope to see follow up with.

I think she takes that position if you are from another origin or if you turn it down as city elf - so it would make sense.

Lanaya (as Keeper) acts as a peacekeeper according to the epilogue iirc and I could see City Elves ralling behind Shianni. Theres lots of potential for them.
