Obviously it's in the eye of the beholder and all but I've been thinking about going after it. However, that commando one looks absurdly long to me considering I didn't use most of those characters often. Really, the 200 wave thing for so many characters is the drawback for me. I know I could grind bronze but that really doesn't appeal to me at all.

On the other hand, I've discovered how to use more characters properly in gold.

It does require a TON of grinding. However, if you really want it, you'll put your mind to it. I managed to finish the Alien Mastery challenges in a couple of weeks, but it required me playing for hours on end each day.

I can tell you I received a sense of personal accomplishment for getting it, the MP version of a Platinum trophy.

When I use it I receive more hate mail, I get kicked from lobbies, I've seen people put their try hard pants on and refuse to help with objectives, I've seen people remove all their equipment when I join the lobby.

They didn't do it because of me, specifically, but because of the banner. It's almost like a new difficulty mode.

You go out of your comfort zone. Discover new characters/weapons and ways to play them.
You spend some of those consumables that were just lying around.
You can tell yourself that once you finish those and max your manifest, you'll have a reason to not play ME MP anymore.

Doing them more than once.. Definitely not worth it at all

I think that Commando banner looks the best, so I am sticking to that, custom made by fans.

I liked doing it but I am in the minority.The commando is one of my favorites though. All the asari, turian and the SI are awesome. The one that will prove anoying IMO is N7 mastery. Good luck and give it a shot. I guarantee you will enjoy trying out new kits.

To me it's part of the game, an objective of sorts so I completed it, no regrets and learned a lot along the way. I don't use the banner as Survivor is my favorite for a host of reasons.

Fortunately, I've been slowly chipping away at N7 before I even thought about BotB so I already have 36 promotions. I figure I'll get done with that somewhere close to when I finish Commando (since Commando will be the last alien one for me).

Exactly was the case with me, and it was this mastery alone which taught me how to use other kits effectively on gold+... So by the time I was done with this mastery I found myself not going back to that one Kit I exclusively played and it was such a welcome change in my multiplayer experience.... Trust me this mastery will surprise you with the kits that you probably might not have even deployed (I know I did).... Best of the Best will then come naturally to you... 

EDIT: regarding the actual question that is the banner worth it, then i'd say its more of a personal opinion and doesn't have a simple yes or no to it... If you are an OCD individual fixated on completion like me then yes its worth it. Aesthetic wise there are far better banners than this....

I only got it cuz I wanted a Femshep banner, which also means I only went for it after they added the Femshep version.

Then a week or two later they added the fanmade Femshep lone wolf and now I use that instead. It's obnoxious to use a banner that says "BEST OF THE BEST", ugh.

If you could BOTB without getting N7 mastery, I'd have it (25 more promotions...). Other than that, I think it's something great to strive for. I know that if I wasn't trying to get it, I likely wouldn't have even though of trying Gold solo. Yet, I tried and succeeded. Nomad looked so long, I thought I'd never finish it. But now, I have Nomad finished.
Doesn't the saying go something like "The journey was better than the destination"? That's kinda how I feel about it. Nomad forced me out out of my regular gold maps, made me try new tactics. All the gun masteries forced me to try guns I'd never have usually thought of using (e.g. imho, The Hornet is pretty good!). So, while I think it'll be for-sure worth it to finally get it, I've enjoyed the journey to it quite a bit.

It is worth it. Dont let other dissuade you. It's a goal and you should achieve it. Will people be jelly, yeah, but that isn't the point. Just go out there and get it. I treat it like a fat chick, it's there, might as well go for it .
