Best romance in the trilogy?

Followed very closely by Miranda.

It's personal bias on their part. They want Shepard in bed with an alien - cuz it's sci-fi and "cool". To be fair, the VS wasn't that bad, but Kaiden in ME1 was boring and in ME3 Ash is basically forgotten after the coup and does absolutely nothing narrative-wise.mtmercydave09 wrote...

People are going to read this thread as "my favourite love interest", when clearly what we should be doing is analyzing them objectively and deciding which has the best arc. In that respect, it's obviously Liara. The writers at Bioware obviously wanted Shepard's LI to be some blue alien chick - what's the point of romance in sci-fi if you just end up with a "boring" human? She's in all three games, LOTSB, form a romantic perspective, was brilliant, and she's arguably one of the best characters no matter how much anyone bashes her for "being in it too much". The only flaw is her personality shift from ME to ME2, which isn't a big deal.
I suppose you're right, but it's the job of the writers at Bioware to not make the human romance option "boring" if they are going to offer it as an option at all.
After all ME is supposed to be about choices and options, so no wonder humans are an option for romances.
I actually thought Miranda was good as well (I am soooo going to get attacked for saying that), but again, she was forgotten in ME3 for the most part except in Citadel - you have to PAY EA to get anything good for Miranda in ME3. Same with Jack.
Jacob......let's not talk about him.

Agree with you. There's definitely a Bioware bias towards Liara.
You're right Ash is forgotten about after the Coup. Heck she doesn't even leave that room until when she goes to Shep's cabin, although it was pretty nice to get to see her on the Presidium. I guess you could say after the Coup you have to pay to get anything with Ashley to get to see her in the Citadel DLC, but even then that scene wasn't terribly great.
For me it's pretty much a tie between Miranda, Ash, and Jack for worst romances in ME3, just in the lack of content sense. LIara is probably the best in the sense of most content, even though I haven't yet played through with Liara as my choice.
Even if you don't romance Liara, she still has more content than Ash, Miranda, and Jack in ME3 it seems.

Now, even if getting down with an alien is admittedly more "cool" than with a human and even though most people do in fact romance aliens in Mass Effect, it doesn't excuse it. Bioware are just their own fanboys, I guess.mtmercydave09 wrote...

And I'd take issue with the worst list you have - it's definately Jacob (because of the personality switch, and the fact that everything he says doesn't sound like something a human being would say; his dialogue isn't even robotic, it's just bizarre), followed by Thane (who was basically forgotten until the Citadel - again, you have to PAY FOR IT, and even then, you don't get much before he dies). Oh and the last-minute FemShep/Vega thing. That was just...creepy.
FemShep gets the bad apples it seems. But you also get Garrus, and he's....well, it's ****ING GARRUS!!!

She should have more content than Jack and Miranda, they aren't squad mates in ME 3, while she is. She is also the Shadow Broker, even though that doesn't seem to play as big a role as I'd figured it would. Regarding Ash, at least for all my games after the very first one, she dies on Virmire. There is nothing like saving a colony from the Collectors and having your LI come out and basically call you a traitor and walk away, and then, once the smoke from the Collector Base settles, she still believes that you're a traitor and forces you to let Garrus shoot her. That was the result of my first playthrough of the trilogy. I really want to shoot either VS on Mars, and I still really believe it should be a Paragon interrupt to be able to do so.mtmercydave09 wrote...

Anyway, what I like about Garrus' romance is how balanced it is. You're a shoulder for him to lean on as much as he is for you. There's tenderness, but it nevers gets saccharine. There's humor, but the romance doesn't feel like just a joke. And there's of course his voice...
As for Liara, well, she obviously has the most content, but her romance ultimately falls short for me because it feels so fragmented. The whole of ME2, the first half of ME3... you're in a romance with her and at the same time you're not because she has become so emotionally distant. I loved her in ME1 and the actual romance scenes in ME2 (LotSB) and ME3 are very good, but other than that...
I really like Samantha Traynor and her romance, but the beginning was a bit wonky, with the shower and all. After that, it became really enjoyable, although part of me felt like Shepard's romance with her was something on the side and not really a integral part of the game. The Citadel DLC fixed that beautifully, though, as there's more romance content and Samantha finally intereacts with the whole crew instead of just EDI and (optionally) Allers.

They build a strong friendship in ME1
In ME2 they grow closer together.
ME3 The relationship matures. It's a very nice progression as it has places where they both are unsure but they overcome those feelings which some of the other relationships lack.
Garrus' reactions in Leviathan were great and in Citadel it tilted more for humour but at the same time it shows him more confortable and relaxed.
Also like how Garrus still acts like a Rival for you so there isn't really one dependant on the other, if you play Paragon choices is genuinely feels like they need each other. That one can't operate without the other.

Right but I'm not surprised Ashley came out and thought Shep was a traitor. I mean after all he was working with the enemy and just came back from the dead. She's just stubborn and hard headed is all, puts the Alliance before everything else. I'm really not surprised she had trust issues.
From what I hear Kaiden does the same thing, calling you a traitor?

Of course there is, she's a squad mate during the whole game. Her actual romance content is few and far between, though. This is what you get when you romanced her in ME1 and continued it in ME2:mtmercydave09 wrote...

1. There's a short conversation after Mars, but that's only to confirm you want to continue the romance and isn't very romantic of itself.
2. There's a conversation after Sur'Kesh I believe, in which she sits on Shepard's lap and kisses him/her, but that only lasts for about ten seconds or so.
3. When she shows you the beacon, there's no extra romance content at all.
4. You spend the Citadel date talking about her mother (nice, but not very romantic) and convincing her for the thousandth time that you want to be more than friends.
5. And there's of course the scene before Cronos station and the scene (two if she's in your party during the final run) in London.
Between the missions, there's no special dialogue that I can think of that makes you feel that you're in a romance with her. So people often act like she's the LI BioWare pushes for, but I honestly don't see why. Overall, her romance feels very unimpressive in ME3.

Wow that's seriously all there is for Liara as far as LI in ME3? Well I guess I don't feel so bad about Ash then. I would have figured the scene with the beacon when she goes up to the cabin would be different than if you was just friends with her.
Sucks you have to convince her for the thousandth time to be more than friends with her. If that happened with Ash I'd understand since Ash still has trust issues until after the Coup attempt, but with Liara I don't think she ever really did.

She is with you for all 3 games and it makes for a sweet story that the hero of the universe goes for someone from a race that isn't too respected by the other races.
Plus how Shep is willing to work around her weak immune system for physical contact gives it a true love feel.

I personally find Tali to be the most attractive character. An ingenue AND a technogeek? Sign me up please! That said, I don't think her romance was treated the best. I think it runs a close second to my nominee for best MaleShep romance. That would be Jack.
I was really pleasantly surprised with the romance arc for Jack. Yeah, throughout it she's still a hardass ****, but there's also a real tender side to her and it has helped to soften my Shepard who romanced her. Plus it made this die-hard pro-ender consider putting off the party until after playing through the end because of her comments.
And now (as a heterosexual male) I will tell you that the BEST romance in ME is GARRUS.
I'm not actually that big of a Garrus fan (my favorite crewmate in the game is Mordin), but the relationship that is built up between Garrus and FemShep is heartwarming, appropriately awkward, and just flat out feels real. Beautiful character moments, and it brings a whole new meaning to the quiet party on the Citadel

It's also important to understand that most of the other romances in the game follow the same basic pattern and themes - learning to love, breaking down barriers, letting go of the past, etc. You can't really tell that story with Ash, she and Shepard already have a lot in common and hit it off basically from the get go. If you choose to romance her, their story is more about starcrossed lovers that the galaxy conspires to tear apart for various cruel reasons.

Ashley - one of the few things that Bioware totally hit out of the part was her make over , change of uniforms and Ashley let lighten up a bit which was really nice to see it was a great progression from when you first met her
Alternate Reality Shep
Miranda - Equally awesome person in her own way .. although I never did a ME3 playthrough with her don't see the point of playing though the whole game with out her on the squad for a couple of cut scenes she got screwed.
IMO these are the two best overall Characters in the entire trilogy

Agree completely. For Ashley being a LI having her stuck in her room for the entire time after the Coup attempt doesn't do much for progressing the romance.
She only comes out to go to the Presidium, the memorial wall, and up to Shep's cabin, that's it.
