I am glad to see that for the most part, the forum has gone from being "how do I get the toolset up and running?" and is moving into the "how do I implement my cool idea in the toolset?". It is great to see people pitching in and helping each other out with suggestions and solutions.
As for a new release of the toolset: things have been a bit slow on the toolset side for a while, partly due to holidays, and partly due to other proirities, but it certainly has not been forgotten or abandoned. I have been keeping everything under wraps, to try and prevent dissapointments. However, after trolling through the forums, I have come to the conclusion that this may not be a great approach. It may be better to keep up a running dialog about what is coming and what is not, rather than keeping you in the dark wondering what, if anything is going on. By shedding light on what is going on, I am also trusting/expecting that you will be mature and understanding enough to realize that until anything is released, everything is tentative. Due to unforseen issues, anything to do with toolset fixes and improvements can and will get recalled at any point, and we may not always be able to tell you all the reasons why. To put it simply, the toolset development and release process is not independent. It must be co-ordinated to be compatible with the game and it's patches and our overall development and release processes. Basically, the game leads and the toolset follows.
Toolset users are one (very important) subset of the Dragon Age community. We released the toolset to assist you in your passion for creating your own worlds and adventures, modding the game, and sharing them with others. However, the toolset is not a direct revenue generator, and as such does not usually get top priority for fixes and enhancements. When we do have people allocated to working on it, we would like to make sure that we are fixing and tweaking the things that really matter to the community. This is where you can help us.
We have found that gleaning bugs and issues from the forums rather difficult and time consuming. As you are probably aware, you can wade through pages of posts about an issue to find out if it has been solved or not, and if so, what the solution was. Additionally, if some poor soul posts an issue and it gets pushed off the first page or two before someone picks up on it, it may never be seen again unless he keeps bumping it. We are in the process of setting up some wiki pages and categories to allow us to better track bugs and feature requests. It is anticipated that this will be useful for both you and us. The wiki was not originally intended for use as a bug tracker, but then again, neither was the social site. I suspect that the wiki may turn out to be more useful than the forums for this task. What we are doing is a bit of an experiment.
What we are wanting to do is get the bugs and feature requests into the wiki. We think that this will be a good complement to the forum. The forum will still be a great place to discuss issues, do troubleshooting and get assistance from others. The wiki pages will be where the issues, solutions, and more definitive reference material relating to the bugs can be posted. This can lead to some duplication of work, but we think it will be worth it, as the forum can provide a good first poke at things that are causing issues, and once they have been kicked around a bit and identified as legitimate issues, they can then be thrown into the wiki, where they are easier to corral, manage and view. There they will lack all of the chatter, and be boiled down to a definitive issue along with any workarounds and the can be flagged as either something that will or will not be fixed, along with potential timelines for a fix.
So, here are some links with some information for you on how to do this:
Reporting a bug
Requesting a new feature
To see bugs that have been reported, click here. For existing feature requests, click here. These pages will be a bit sparse right now, but will start filing up soon. (hopefully the bugs one stays small...)
If you want to give some constructive criticism about the Social site, take a look at Social Site Suggestions. This page has been around for a while, but has seen no recent edits.
If you haven't edited the wiki before, its actually pretty easy. Jump in and give it a try. Here's some quick help.
Because this thread is going to get a lot of reads, here are a couple of other pages people are likely to need access to:
Known issues with the toolset. And of course the ever present unable to connect to the database issue. (AKA- the bane of my existance)
This topic is locked and stickied, not to prevent discussion, but so that it can be a quick, unclutered source of information. I will update it as needed.
