Skills trees when importing ME1 character in ME2

Gentleman,

I am trying to play a ME1 character in ME2. Below is the skill tree of the character I ended ME1 with:

Now when I import this into ME2 I end up with this rather sad looking skill tree:

img594.imageshack.us/img594/1184/29103874.jpg

So my question is... What gives?

Where's are the weapon proficiencies? Am I adept at all weapons now?

Why is tactical armor back at level 1?

Why am I now an operative instead of a commando?

Have paragon/renegade values been reset?

What actually gets imported? Only your background and the choices you made in ME1?

This is a bit confusing for me. This doesn't feel anything like the guy I played in ME1... I hope someone can shed some light on this. Please?

Kind Regards

Levels and abilities will not transfer due to different ability systems. You do get bonuses depending on your level and various other things. More on this here.

Edit: and it is Tactical Cloak, not Tactical Armor - entirely different ability.

You'll receive a bonus for importing a high-level Shepard from ME1, but nothing more.
Don't worry, this won't happen again since in ME3 the skill trees are imported from ME2.
Ignore the Operative/Commando thing. It's just a naming issue.
You're proficient with Heavy Pistols, SMGs and Sniper Rifles. Later in the game you'll be able to choose beetwen (1) a powerful, exclusive sniper rifle (2) shotgun training or (3) assault rifle training.
Paragon and renegade points are partially transfered (around 10%) from ME1 to ME2 and from ME2 to ME3.
You'll need to get used to the new powers. Don't be sad, first time I played ME2 was with a Infiltrator imported from ME1 and I had to get used to the new skills too.
You'll be able to select a new, bonus power later in the game. Fortification is a good candidate.
Your background, romances and choices are imported.
Good luck!

Thank you both for your informative replies. It's really cleared some things up for me, even though I would have liked to have more of a feeling of 'picking up where you left off' when going from ME1 to ME2.

Looks like its gonna be a tough choice since I do really like my assault rifles, especially in ME3. If I don't get that skill in ME2, will that mean I won't be able to wield assault rifles in ME3?

Good to read that the switch from ME2 to ME3 is more seamless. Thanks again :)

No, it doesn't. Contrary to ME1 and ME2, in ME3 any class can use any weapon with full effectiveness. Your choice only affects the rest of ME2 and any new game + in ME2 based on that profile.
So you're free to pick the specialized sniper rifle. I reccomend doing that if you have "Kasumi -Stolen Memory" (since it gives you a very good SMG that makes assault rifles redundant) and like a one-shot sniper rifle like the starting Mantis.
You're welcome. ☺

Fortification is a terrible skill. Possibly the worst bonus power in the game next to Shredder Ammo. I would consider Neural Shock the best bonus power for the Infiltrator, with Warp Ammo being the better choice if you take Widow sniper rifle later in the game.

You can use whatever weapons you want in ME3; ME3 does not place class limitations on weapons like ME1 and ME2 did.

Now for assault rilfes in ME2, the Avenger and Geth Pulse Rifle (available only on Hardcore and Insanity only) are not good weapons. The Vindicator is a good all-around weapon. The Revenant is only made available to Soldiers without modding. The Mattock (DLC) is considered overpowered.

That being said, you have SMGs which are good weapons and tend to be overlooked. SMGs and Shogtuns gain big damage bonuses to shields and barriers, while Pistols and Sniper Rifles gain big damage bonuses to armor. Assault Rifles gain average damage bonuses to all protection types. No weapons gain damage bonuses to health. Damage bonus multipliers found here.

I was going to say Barrier, but since Infiltrator doesn't have biotics, it would look strange. :P
Sadly, Geth Shield Boost is only available very late in the game. In any way, those three bonus powers are good if you are accustomed to instant shield recharge skills in ME1 and somewhat missed the panic buttom from Barrier or Shield Boost.

Yeah, if you have the Locust, only the Mattock can make the Assault Rifle training worthwhile.

Please don't argue too much over a question I asked. :)

I'm a bit noob when it comes to Mass Effect builds. I tend to just go with what feels right, the storyline being more important than being able to tackle content on the hardest level.

I was hooked on assault rifles the first time I played the ME games as a soldier. I guess I should let that go when playing a different class and explore weapons like SMG's more. Thanks :)

I value any input and will read up on any links provided. The mass effect trilogy is pretty great for inspiring such debates with such a relatively limited RPG system, is it not?
