It's been a while since I last gave an update on John, I've been pretty busy as of late. However, since I completed this play-through a few days ago, I'll go ahead and give a brief summary of the last bits of this play-through.
After dealing with the situation on Rannoch, John got a message from the Asari Councilor. She wanted to meet him on the Citadel. When John arrived at Udina's former office, she explained to him that high ranking Asari officials have decided to release some sensitive information to John, information that could help with the Crucible. John's immediate response was WTF? Why did you wait until now to tell me this? But he hid his emotions and heard her out(damn diplomacy).
Once the Normandy arrived at Thessia, the Reapers were there in force, and Liara insisted on going with John. He empathized with Liara during the shuttle ride, but told her to put aside her grief and or turn it into anger. There was nothing that could be done about it now, except finding out what the Catalyst was so the Allied Fleets could complete the Crucible.
As to John’s reactions to the events that unfolded on Thessia, he felt…like he almost had the fight kicked out of him. It wasn’t because of the fact that the Asari homeworld itself was lost(though he understood Liara’s grief), but because he was so close to finding the information he needed to end the war. More or less, he was just tired of this crap, and losing the data to that f***wit Kai Leng put him in a s***ty mood. Losing Thessia was just the icing on the cake(or as Drew once said in his self-titled show, “The great circle of crap is complete”). But most of all, John was tired of Cerberus’ crap. They have been a pain in his ass since he lost his whole squad at Akuze. After going through his momentary grief, he took his own advice and turned it into a cold rage. He needed to find out where Kai Leng slithered off to, and Traynor gave him the lead he needed.
On Sanctuary, John found more reasons to utterly despise Cerberus. That’s not to say that he wasn’t annoyed with all those people just hiding instead of contributing to the war effort(especially since this was a war for survival), but Cerberus “encouraged” this behavior by creating a supposed “safe haven”(even if this safe haven turned out to be even worse than a concentration camp from WWII). He even understood that in War, you have to make the hard and morally questionable decisions sometimes to win. But Cerberus took it way too far. At least John was able to save Miranda in the process of shutting that place down. She even planted a tracer on Kai Leng before he left, which would lead John to TIM’s main base of operations. This was exactly what John needed to simultaneously destroy Cerberus once and for all and acquire the information he needed so Hacket’s fleet could complete their construction of the Crucible.
Once John felt like he did everything he could to aid the war effort(I completed all the side quests and Leviathan before moving on from this point), he told Admiral Hackett that he was ready to assault Cronos Station. On the ride there, Tali visited John in his quarters so they could spent some much needed time with each other. This also put John in better spirits.
When they finally arrived at Cronos Station, John was able to vent his frustrations and disgust with Cerberus on every Mook that got in his way, especially Kai Leng. He was also able to gain the information he needed on the Catalyst. Unfortunately, TIM ratted out this information to the Reapers. Because of this, they captured the Citadel and brought it to Earth. John informed Hackett, and they finally decided to bring make their final Assault on Earth with the Allied Fleets.
Now in regards to Priority: Earth, I’m not going to bother giving a summary of what happened(other than that Steve survived). As most of you know, it’s not one of ME3’s highlights(and that final speech is definitely cringe worthy). I will say that Tali’s goodbye in the Evac Scene was quite touching, even if the Evac Scene itself is nonsensical.
After John had somehow survived Harbinger’s “giant laser” and made it to the Beam, he found himself in a strange part of the Citadel. Apparently, the Reapers were trying to recreate their efforts on the Collector Base. John merely shook his head and continued on his way so he could open the Citadel arms. Anderson had the same idea, but TIM decided to crash their party. John spoke his mind at TIM, and shot his sorry a** in the process. Unfortunately, Anderson also got hit and died shortly after(at least John was able to say his goodbye’s). John then managed to open the Citadel Arms.
At this point, John himself is feeling groggy and weak. But before he loses consciousness, the floor below him moves and raises him to a level above him. He meets the “Catalyst”, and it explains that it controls the Reapers and gives John his reasons for existing. He also explains what the Crucible does and gives John three ways to activate it. He can either use the Crucible to destroy the Reapers, control them, or to synthesize organics and synthetics. John had no interest in controlling the Reapers or becoming an AI himself, and he was skeptical of the whole idea of Synthesis(he didn’t like the idea of tampering with Evolution). He decided to blow the Reapers to hell, and damn the consequences(he was also skeptical of the Catalyst’s claim that all synthetics would eventually turn on and destroy all organics). Afterwards, John wakes up in pain, but he is at least alive.
Afterwards, I played the Citadel DLC as a sort of Epilogue, and now I’m going to redo my Canon run, starting with ME1 again.
