Well, gotta love real life getting in the way of fun.  After a few days absence, I've returned with more of Valena's story.  I'll be doing several updates over the next few days in order to play catch-up.

Today, we're heading to Eden Prime.

In case the player needed a reminder...

Spoiler

With the rachni, you'd figure that Shep's crew would be used to the impossible.

Spoiler

"Are you sure it's that benign?"

Spoiler

Shep, do you really think the naive asari believes otherwise?

Spoiler

"Humans have an old saying about assumptions.  Let's hope yours doesn't bite you in the arse."

Spoiler

"Liara, you're putting way too much faith in mortal nature here."

Spoiler

Oh, you have no idea.

Spoiler

Something need doing?

Spoiler

Shep took a hit of prothean acid.

Spoiler

Next time: More stuff at Eden Prime!  The most photogenic companion with the least amount of charisma!   At least one more update for the day!

Seriously, the camera loves Javik.

Sorry Vaz - no offense intended. Just remembering. This remembrance is for all those who suffer in pointless conflict, service personnel and civilians. If there is one thing that ME does for me - it's that I want an end to cruelty and stupid pointless fighting. Get everyone home safely. I want everyone to have their breathe scene.

No more serious stuff.

thank you @vazgen, I learn something new today about the empire. History books here in my country really like to sanitize Islamic history especially muslim empires and dynaties.

Resumed Jack Shepard's (Combat Engineer) quest in NG+.

1. Ran around the Citadel, handing out various gifts and meeting up with various squaddies around the Citadel. Garrus kept disappearing from his meeting point though. Not sure why.

2. Ran into a very angry Krogan named Wrex on the way out. Apparently I sabotaged the cure oh so many months ago before I put this playthrough on hiatus. He called off his help for Earth. I filled him full of bullet holes.

3. Dropped in on a snowy mountain getaway to help some Ex-Cerberus scientists get away. Dr. Gavin Archer shot himself. Garrus and Ashley made short work of the Atlas with their Javelins.

Zapp B. Shepard

Sole Survivor/Vanguard/failshep

So the Council screwed over Zapp, what a surprise.  Also, Udina backstabbed him, again, no surprise there.  Thankfully, Anderson is willing to both metaphorically and literally take a bullet for Zapp and get the Normandy back into space.  With time of the essence and Saren one step away from the Conduit, Zapp decides that now is a good time for some of those side missions.

First it's off to rescue some scientist mentioned on Noveria.  Turns out he is being held captive by none other than Shepard's old comrade Corporal Toombs.  Toombs is shocked to see Zapp, and Dr. Wayne begs for his life.

Wayne:  Shepard! I work for a well funded organization called Cerberus, if you help me out of this, you will be richly rewarded.

Zapp:  Interesting offer, does this organization have any available volcanic lairs and British nemesisis?  I might be looking to join after I found out that I got inducted into the lame SPECTRE.

Wayne:  Uh, well, there was a volcano base attached to the Firewalker project I think is vacant.  Also Admiral Anderson is no fan of us and rumor has it that he was born in London.  So ya, if you're interested I'm sure the boss would be welcome the man who single handedly dispatched a Thresher Maw with a butter knife.

Toombs:  A BUTTER KNIFE?!  Is that what you told everyone!  Zapp didn't kill any thresher maw, he slept in that day when the whole squad was sent out on patrol.  He was in the bloody shuttle napping while the rest of us were being eaten.

Zapp:  Oh come on Toombs, you just ruined my interview!  Now they'll never want me... unless...

*Shoots Dr. Wayne*

Zapp:  Garrus, Tali, Toombs, If anybody mentions this again they'll be left behind with the next nuke we find.

After that little sidequest it was off to Ilos and then the Citadel to stop Sovereign once and for all.  Shep tries to convince Saren to kill himself, and though Zapp's incoherent ramblings made the prospect of death very appealing to Saren, he decided to fight on.  One quick battle later and Saren is dead.  Zapp decides to let the council die, after all, what has the council ever done for humanity?  "Well they did stop the Turian from subjugating you" says Liara.  "OK, well besides that" responds Zapp.  "They gave you charts of all known mass relay networks" Chimes in Garrus.  "OK, well besides THAT".  "They integrated you into the galactic economy thus skyrocketing the human standard of living" says Liara.  "Well that's a given"  Says Zap, "But besides saving us from slavery, giving us unrestricted access to galactic transportation, and expanding our economy to an insane degree, what has the council ever done for us?".

Finally realizing it was a lost cause, the squaddies back of and let the council be destroyed.  Saren comes back as a robo-zombie, but like all zombies is vulnerable to lots of bullets aimed at the cranium.  With Saren dead and the galaxy saved, Zapp nominates Udina, mostly because he enjoys how Emperor Palpatiney the ambassador gets.  And that concludes Zapp B. Shepard's ME1 run.  Tune in next time for ME2, where I can really get a head start on that ME3 memorial wall.

@ Vazgen As a man of Armenian descent, it's definitely not the happiest day for me either.  Also very interesting article.

Meet Hannah Shepard for Insanity run in ME1!

Origin: Colonist

Background: Ruthless

Class: Adept

Spoiler

With her I'm doing something I thought I never would do, haha. She's not gonna trust most aliens because of what happened on Mindoir, so she will probably bond with Ashley (and I don't like Ashley because of how she is with Aliens ).

I'll try and play her as mostly neutral with the alien crew, except when she feels the need to give a Renegade-y answer. She's friendly with the rest of the crew except when she thinks her authority should show.

Ever since her parents and friends were slaughtered she's been on her own, building walls around her and not letting anyone get too close. I will let her fall for Kaidan though, however she has something to think about when she realises how serious it gets :D

She will make the tough decisions on missions as she always did before, to get the job done no matter what.

I would recommend not recruiting Garrus until after Virmire. You have to recruit either Wrex or Garrus, but you don't have to get both right away and it would make sense to distrust the Turian more than the Krogan since humans went to war with the Turians. Do Virmire 3rd and only have humans on your team until then. On Virmire Shepard is forced to use aliens. At that point Shepard can start to be more open about aliens and you can then go back and get Garrus at C-Sec. To avoid recruiting Garrus don't go talk to Harkin. Just go talk to Barla Von, pick up Wrex at C-Sec, then go to Cora's Den.

At some point, for the story to make sense, Shepard will have to become less suspicious of aliens. By the time you get to ME2 the story simply does not lend itself to having an anti-alien Shepard, so you have to make it so Shepard changes her mind. Virmire is the place to do that.

My Morwen Shepard (colonist/sole survivor) started out as anti-alien in ME1, but changed her mind after Virmire.

Excellent

Here's a thought.

Recruit Wrex. Don't recruit Garrus.

Recruit Liara before Virmire

Do the geth missions and don't give the data to Tali. Haha

Kill Wrex on Virmire or let Ashley kill him. Excellent

finish the game with only Ashley/Kaidan, Liara and Tali

The dialogue in ME2 and ME3 makes less sense if you don't recruit Garrus at all in ME1. I think it is better to pick him up at a later point, like after Virmire if you do that mission 3rd. Of course, you could avoid the dialogue problems in ME3 by killing Garrus in ME2.

That's Bioware's fault for that. It never made sense having him say just like old times when he wasn't recruited in ME1. The same with ME3. He recognizes Kirrahe when he was never at Virmire. Of course all the dialogue on Sur'Kesh is screwy between Kirrahe, Liara and Garrus

Same with his convo with Vega in the mess room. Could've sworn he still says he's been with Shepard since the beginning.

I like him picking him up, but there was potential in not picking him up too. That whole Citadel sequence at the beginning of ME1 has all these angles where you're kind of subtly siding with different races (especially Council vs other races), and Garrus/Wrex kind of symbolize that as well. It loses it's potential by becoming so one sided towards Turians and Council races.

Shepard’s making a habit of sassing Thane. First when Thane mentioned Kolyat, Shep said “Big deal, you spawned. Organic species tend to do that.” And “I’m not interested in your spiritual bullshit”. Number one diplomat in the galaxy, Logan Shepard. :P Then after speaking to Bailey something like:
Thane: You didn’t tell him that Kolyat’s planning an assassination.
Shepard: I also didn’t tell him what you do for a living. Do you make a habit of discussing your work with the police?

Fortunately, Shepard proved himself to be handy in interrogations. He literally just walked in the room, waved a gun around and said “I’m a Spectre, start talking.” Ah, the benefits of abusing your power! They followed Joram Talid, though Thane got a little confused at one point. He said “Target in sight” in this decisive voice. Followed by “I can’t see the target.” Make up your mind! They managed to stop Kolyat from completing his mission. Shepard completed it for him. Thane started to chide him for that, before getting chewed out by his son. They had a touching little reunion. Happy family moments warm the cockles of Shepard’s heart. So he’s going to love the next mission...

Hunting down Morinth proved to be an unpleasant experience, since they had to deal with a woman whose daughter was murdered. Shep showed a distinct lack of tact by asking Samara whether Morinth ever drugged her victims - right in front of the mother. Aren’t you supposed to wait until you’re in private before discussing a case? You’re a terrible detective, Shep!
He snooped around Nef’s room and watched her diary videos. “Am I a freak? Morinth’s a girl like me...” Two hundred years into the future and very little apparently changes.  <_<

Shepard went off to have it large at a special Afterlife party, and punched various turians. They happened to be the worst people there. He also showcased some very classy dance moves. I’m sure Samara is very impressed. Morinth certainly was, because she decided to lure him back to her place. Shep resisted her brain magic, and I kind of wanted a “Surprise, motherf*cker!” line from Shep, followed by a “Suprise, b*tch. Bet you thought you’d seen the last of me!” line from Samara. What can I say – old memes die hard! :P  Since Shepard has no reason at all to trust Morinth, she was killed by her mother. Maybe I should have saved the happy-family-ending until last?

Joker seemed almost disappointed, which makes Shepard wonder why they trust Joker to fly the ship at all. Clearly he has serious common sense issues. With all the loyalty and lesser N7 missions out of the way, it’s time for a Derelict Reaper. Tali’s will wait until afterwards, because it will be Shep’s crowning achievement in tactlessness.

Zapp B. Shepard

ME2!

Spacer/Sole Survivor/Vanguard/failshep

Just as before, our adventure begins on a routine patrol.  However, things take a turn for the worse when an unknown cruiser appears and attacks the Normandy.  It is soon evident that the ship is lost.

Zapp:  Pressly!  Inform the crew to make for the escape shuttles.  All that's left now is for the captain to stay behind as a distraction and go down with the ship.

Pressly:  That's surprisingly noble of you sir.

Zapp:  No!  That's surprisingly noble of you.  As of this moment, I'm using my SPECTRE authority to promote you to captain, and since you now outrank me, I wish you the best of luck.

Unfortunately, a blast from the enemy ship cuts down Pressly, and Shepard is once again the ranking officer.  By this point though, there is only one lifeboat left.  Zapp makes his way to the front of the ship, and it turns out that Joker hasn't left as well.  Zapp considers leaving the man, but since Joker is in possession of one of the galaxy's most extensive fornax collections, Zapp decides it's worth it to save him.  This proves to be a bad idea as Zapp is spaced in the attempt and left for dead.

Two years later, Zapp awakens on an operating table.  After quickly making sure everything is in the right place, he proceeds to bust out of the place with the help of Miranda and Jacob.  To Zapp's joy, it turns out that Cerberus has decided to employ him.  Unfortunately, there are no volcano lairs for rent, but they do give him a new Normandy, and after the Freedom's Progress Mission, TIM says he can keep it, so Zapp considers it a wash.  The catch is, TIM wants him to go on a suicide mission to stop the collectors.  Zapp tells TIM not to worry, he has experience with these types of assignments, after all, when Zapp Shepard is in charge, every mission is a suicide mission.

Tyson and Aria finished taking Omega.  A pity about Nyreen sacrificing herself could have used her in the fight against the reapers but that is war.  Tyson allowed Aria to have her revenge on Petrovsky.  Now back on the citadel for a bit of rest.  Still have to finish sorting out that mess out on Rannoch so Tyson will head back there next.

Update below

For the first time since 2012, I have started a new play through of the saga.  I've decided to make a unique Shepard experience, which will lock me out of certain side quests.

Name:  "Gramps" Shepard, Infiltrator

Disposition:  Grumpy old fart.  A bit of a renegade, but not psychotic.  Will do what is necessary to get the job done, but will not break the law.  He is a loyal servant of the Alliance and Council, but is not afraid to speak his mind.  He fears AI and VI, but willingly uses technology that is not equipped with AI (He refuses to use Avina).   "Gramps" is anti-social and avoids idle chit-chat.

Mass Effect 1:

- Gramps dealt rudely with a crazy fan, two journalists, and an asari consort.

- Gramps dislikes Krogan, and did not invite Wrex onto the Normandy.

- The mission comes first.  Gramps has no time to chat with his crew, especially the unstable L2 biotic.   However the Asari researcher is attracted to Gramps, and Gramps sees opportunity for R&R.

- Gramps will not kill without cause.  Corporal Toombs was given a chance to surrender, but he had to be put down.

- The Batarian threat has been defeated and Terra Nova was saved.  Gramps captured Balak and rough him up for killing the hostages.  Balak will be turned over to the Alliance for interrogation.

- Administrator Anoleis was found breaking the law (with the help of Lorik Qui'in) and has been arrested.   Also the smuggling operation has been foiled, and the weapons were confiscated by Gramps.

- The Rachni threat has been defeated.  They will never again threaten the galaxy.

- Father Kyle turned himself in.  Gramps bluffed that he would kill all the followers.

- Gramps does not cut deals with criminals.   Helena Blake and her gangsters are dead.

- At Zhu's Hope, Gramps realizes the colonists are innocent and does not allow them to be harmed.  Shiala was allowed to live after she promised to help the colonists rebuild.

- At Virmire:  Gramps loaned the unstable L2 biotic to the STG.  He hopes the STG can whip him into shape.  Unfortunately, Alenko and the STG were defeated while Gramps stayed with the bomb to ensure detonation.

- After Virmire, the citadel council berated Shepard for being destructive.  Gramps told the Turian councilor where to stick it.

- On the way to Ilos, Gramps and Liara enjoyed a little R&R.  Gramps needed the stress relief.

- At Ilos we discovered an ancient VI.  Liara tried to turn it into a research project, but Gramps reminded her that VI are evil and that Saren was was getting away.

- Gramps returned to the Citadel, which was under attack.   The council was sacrificed to save the human forces for the final push.

- After Saren's defeat, Udina asked me to choose a new chancellor.  I told him I didn't have time for politics, because the reapers are coming.

Mass Effect 2:

- Gramps wakes up from his long sleep, and is surrounded by Cerberus.  He trusts no one, but is forced into travelling to Freedom's Progress.  Miranda and Jacob are always trying to earn his trust, but Gramps is even grumpier than usual after his nap.

- They discover Tali at Freedom's Progress.  He never trusted Quarians, as they are responsible for the Geth.   He asks Tali to join forces to find Veetor, so that he can keep an eye on the Quarians.

- When we find Veetor (the mad Quarian), Cerberus wanted him for experimentation.  Gramps saved him from Cerberus, and sent him away with Tali.

- Cerberus built a new command ship for Gramps, and equipped with an AI.  Shepard's first priority is to to unplug the abomination and toss Miranda and Jacob out the air lock.   But he needs them.... for now.

- Gramps enjoyed the R&R of Afterlife.  The talent is top notch.

- A few people on Omega tried to ask favors of Gramps, but he has enough trouble with Cerberus looking over his shoulder.  Solve your own problems, people!

- Gramps recruited a Salarian doctor, and the two are getting along well.  They are practical old farts, and make a good team.

- Garrus has joined the squad. Now that Gramps has three trusted squad members (Garrus, Solus, and Joker), he is prepared to overthrow the Cerberus madmen who run his ship.

OOC:  I'm having a hard time being Renegade in Mass Effect 2.   Because Gramps doesn't trust TIM/Cerberus, his dialog choices have been Paragon.  He's gotten a few renegade points from distrusting Miranda and Jacob, but for now he is significantly more paragon than I planned.
