Aaah, killing Shiala was hard. The way she surrendered before I killed her...
She could've at least put up a fight, I wouldn't have felt so bad then
I mean she didn't deserve it like Rana Thanoptis.
I've killed her a few times, but the majority of my ME1 playthroughs, I let her go
I was a little surprised the first time I killed her that she would turn around, get to her knees and put her hands behind her head. At that moment, she was no threat, and I would've taken her as a squadmate instead of having Liara.

I only killed her once just so I could see the replacement npc they came up with in ME 2. Never doing that again.

Naomi Shepard visited Sur'Kesh today. Sunny, pretty waterfalls, buildings with architecture reminiscent of Aztecs... and Cerberus ![]()
She also visited Utukku and helped Aralakh Company with some bug infestation ![]()
Fun fact: in Sumerian mythology the utukku were a type of spirit or demon that could be either benevolent or evil. I wonder if it has any connection to the possible outcomes of that mission...

Finished an "indecisive" ME1 playthrough. I kind of wanted it to reflect the cover art. Shepard unarmed, in the middle between Ash and Garrus. My ME2 import shows he has 119 Paragon points and 117 Renegade. Didn't invest a point in charm/intimidate.
Sh*t is about to get real from now on though. ![]()

me: Why did you create the intelligence?
Levi: After seeing our thralls killing each other over this device, what you call a video game, we took the device away and had the intelligence guard it. But one of our kind reprogrammed the intelligence to guard it at all costs. Without warning it killed my kind and built Harbinger. It does this each cycle when a species discovers information about the device.
me: That sucks. Is there a way to stop it?
Levi: Yes. Find the device and take it. Once its in your hands, the intelligence is no longer needed and the harvest will end
me: Do you know where it is? Can the crucible help?
Levi: We have no idea where the device is. We have seen past civilizations try to build this crucible, but never completed it. We do not know its outcome.
me: That sucks part 2. Can you help me stop the reapers?
Levi: Yes. Take a few of the orbs and place them in areas the reapers are located and we can have them destroy each other. Now leave. I have 50 more laps to swim
Traynor: Any news Commander?
me: Unfortunately no. The good part is Leviathan will help in this war. It did confirm that its a video game, but call it a device. I should've asked it why.
Ashley: What now Shepard?
me: We make plans to attack Cerberus. Sam will you stay with me until we start attacking?
Traynor: Of course
Ashley: Its possible the device could be with Cerberus.
me: You might be right. You will join me in helping locate this device. But stopping Cerberus is our main goal
Ashley: Yes ma'am. I'll see you both later

Have you ever done a non-persuade playthrough of ME2? I did that once to find out what my options were. I found some interesting things. Mordin has a funny line if you don't use an interrupt when you first meet him. Jedore's dialogue over the loudspeaker during the Warlord mission changes if you don't use a persuade option with the merc you first meet, or if you don't shoot him with the interrupt. (You also get a number of Fenris mechs show up in addition to the usual batch of enemies.) I was also amused by the reaction of the Salarian you meet during Thane's recruitment who points a gun at Shepard when you don't use a persuade option or interrupt.

You know, I thought for some time now to not use any interrupts or persuasive options for my FemShep in ME2 as well. In fact I started out with that in ME1 now already, the only time I used a persuasion option was during the quest "I remember me", I couldn't let Talitha die ![]()
I'm now convinced to try it out

me: You look like a ballerina doing all your fancy moves
KL: You think so? I always wanted to do ballet, but was never allowed to have a sword.
me: Here's a suggestion. Why not use a sword that you see kids have when they go trick or treating on halloween? It won't harm anyone and you get to be in the ballet.
KL: Mmmm. You know Shepard. That may work. Yeah. I like that idea. I'll do it. Thanks. Would you come and see me perform?
me: I will if you get me front row seats for me and my friend
KL: Can do Shepard. Take care
TIM: I want to control them
Anderson: I want to destroy them
me: While you 2 argue, I'm going up this elevator and see if I can find this device
Anderson and TIM: What device?
me: Don't worry about it. You two keep arguing
catalyst: Why are you here?
me: I came to get the device
catalyst: NO. I will give you 3 options not to take the device. In door number 1, you can control the reapers. In door number 2, you can make everything green and finally in door number 3, you can destroy the reapers.
me: You must like Monty Hall. He was the host of the game show Let's Make a Deal.
catalyst: Correct. You humans have very interesting tv shows
me: I refuse to deal. I will take the device.
catalyst: You can't. You will never tak-----
Linda looks around her. The catalyst is gone and the reapers are self terminating themselves. Leviathan was right.
much later
Ashley: Everything ok Shepard?
me: It is. Hey Sam. Here's the device. Take a look at it while I walk around
Traynor: Yes ma'am
Ashley: What happens now Commander?
me: We help the people that need it. Once that's done, I will take Samantha to Horizon to search for her parents. Its the least I can do for her.
Traynor: Commander? Did you know there's 4 video games?
Ashley and me: What?
Traynor: Yes. The first 3 is called the Mass Effect 1, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 and the fourth is a continuation of the three, but with no title. I have no idea why it doesn't have a title. It has all the characters from the previous three games. I wonder why it wasn't called Mass Effect 4?
me: Lets worry about that later Sam. Lets get back to the Normandy

The other good thing about not investing in charm/intimidate in ME1 is if I decided to play a New Game+. You get free charm/intimidate points in each new playthrough. Eventually could fill up both bars.

Time for squadmates talk!
Went to see Tali first, she tried to be very optimistic in regards to finding Saren and she's convinced I can deliver. Garrus on the other hand expressed his doubts if we ever catch up with Saren, and I assured him we will. He yet again offered his help and he asked me what I intend to do once we get to Saren, suggesting Saren's too dangerous to be kept alive. I confirmed I indeed have no intention of letting Saren live. He's got it coming. Huh, maybe Garrus and I are a lot more alike than I thought. Gotta admit, I like the way that turian thinks.
Ashley invited me to drink with her to celebrate Armistice Day, and I learned more about her past. About her grandfather and Shanxi. He was in command when they surrendered to the turians. Now I know why she pushes herself so hard and why she dislikes aliens.
Wrex told me about the time he was recruited by Saren, so he never told me before that he had this past with Saren. Ah, whatever, I don't really care, it doesn't help us. I asked Wrex about the armor I found, and big coincidence, it's the family armor. Good thing I go explore uncharted worlds!
Liara worried about me. I told her I'm fine. I don't need anyone to worry about me. We'll get it done, I will see to this.
My chat with Kaidan went a bit unexpected. We actually argued, not the best step forward into... whatever this is. Kaidan told me about Vyrnnus and how he tried to protect Rahna from the turian. I kept saying that Vyrnnus got what he deserved, but Kaidan didn't feel that way. We kept arguing about aliens and the Council, and in the end I said I don't need him kissing the Council's asses. Fine, yes, he made a point in saying that he can have his opinion and that he thought we respected each other more than that. He's right. I told him I was sorry, I'm just a bit on edge about this topic. I don't expect him to understand. But I like him, a lot. So I'm gonna try to not ruin this.
Duty called again. Took care of the colony of the dead and afterwards rid the world of some mad scientists in an ExoGeni facility.
That chat with Kaidan was so great! I loved that I could get into this alien argument with him and stay in character. ![]()

In ME3, I kept Samara from killing herself. Then I went back to the Citadel and wandered around. I unplugged the sedatives from the Batarian. Conrad died. I talked to Miranda and she told me about the control chip a second time. Yeah, Miranda, you're an evil person. Is that what you want me to say? ... and your head grew in this game. It's like Allers. It's too big. And that hair.
Then I went down to the refugee camp and ran into Balak and shot him. I don't know how he got out of the Alliance prison, but there he was. Now he lies dead on the floor. Someone clean this mess up before it starts to stink.

Since it was very early in development, they had to use the ME2 squad-mates because the ones for 3 were not defined yet.
For some reason, aside from Garrus I don´t think any of the ME2 squad-mates was considered. At most they could accompany you for an arc (Like Tali) or a single mission. Tali´s role was later expanded because she had a huge fanbase and thanks to the fact that she was also a ME1 squad-mate. One of the developers was also a big fan of her and stood up fighting for her to be a more proeminent character. It seems that originally she was going to work just like admiral xen. At most, she would have been a temporary squad-mate for the quarian/geth arc.
Aside from Garrus, the other possibly dead characters (Tali, Kaidan/Ashley) all have diminished roles. I simply can not imagine Bioware being able to afford so much conditional content as entire roster of ME2 characters that could potentially be dead or in some cases never having been recruited. It sucks for us fans, but from a logistical standpoint it makes total sense.
I mean, ME3 as it is looks impressive to me to this day. Everything in it related to Garrus, Tali, Wrex, Mordin, Kaidan, Ashley, Legion and others is ENTIRELY conditional. Only a portion of the public will ever experience, specially if they only play the game once.
I guess that´s why the developers focused on Liara so much. She´s the only character in the trilogy guaranteed to be alive after ME2. Which is why she and Edi have such large roles, even larger than Tali and the virmir survivor, both absent for a large portion of the game.
As cool as it may sound to have a ME3 roster with new characters + the cast from ME1+the cast from ME2, it would have been a logistical nightmare from several angles.
I think part of the reason why some people disliked me3 and tended to favor 2 is because 2 jumped the shark with so many squadmates (12 if we consider the DLCs). ME3 can have as little as 3 depending on how your game starts. I guess everyone was expecting that the rooster was going to be expanded (as it was from 1 to 2). And while I see that the developers tried to offer more quality content with a smaller cast, the game lacked in comparison to 2 in terms of quantity, variety. And to make matters worse, in a game that suffers from a small cast, they decided to make one of the characters a DLC sold separately. From up to 12 in 2 down to 3 in 3 it´s a big letdown, it can even look depressing.
Maybe the error was ME2 offering so many characters, making many of them only potentially recruitable, and raising the possibility that virtually each one of them could have died by the end of the game. I would hate to be the person in charge of defining the content for the follow-up game to such a chaotic situation.
And there are also some objectionable decisions (at least to some), like focusing on making kaidan gay, offering homosexual exclusive parters, Dianna Allers, having 3 (!!!) engineers at the same time (four if we count tali), having to choose between 2 doctors, Kay-Leng, all the effort put into the multi-player module... If none of this ever happened maybe they could have find room for *insert your favorite missed character here* and/or *insert your second favorite missed character here*.
In my case, game-play wise we would be talking about Grunt and Miranda.
Story-wise they would be Jack and Legion.

I appreciate the post. Yeah, on some level I understand how difficult it is. It's just not the way I wanted to go out...ending the final game like that. I can deal with it, but I'll never like it. Now I have to rationalize my way through the game where Shepard is similar to those miserable folks on the Citadel.. disconnected or wondering where lost friends are. I've come to even enjoy it...It keeps my Shepard grounded... "At least I'm not as bad off as Javik, Bailey, or Cortez", and helps me sympathize with even more miserable NPCs. lol.
But this isn't what people play games for... to feel the "lack of presence" of things..and simulate war-torn solitude. They play for the exact opposite.
I like the addition of Traynor. All her missions focus on saving humans/human endeavor. The story needed that.
