I could never figure what the point of using the engine room was.

As for the actual topic here, I'm just about to wrap up what's going to be my last run for a long, long time. Checking off some boxed including finally finishing an Ashley romance. Ontarom tonight, a Citadel trip for a shooting party with Garrus, and then it's endgame time.

As often happens with me, this Shep started Renegade but drifted much more Paragon in the third game. I think it's from going P with so many of the minor interpersonal chats. Anyone else have this happen?

Just had the opposite happen actually. My Paragade Hal is at 60/40 R/P mix now just after the party. Still have Leviathan, a bunch of N7s and Cerberus Hq to go. I play it out as Shepard getting increasingly fanatical about stopping the Reapers where he sees everyone and everything as walking dead unless they are destroyed, so almost nothing is seen as too extreme in hastening their end. That and Hal has been spending a lot of time talking with Javik. When they met, Hal said he wanted to end the war with his honour intact and Javik called him on it. Since then his commitment to victory has been beyond reproach.

He was pretty solid paragon from ME1 despite killing the queen and being forced to kill Wrex. He did save the council and got mostly positive outcomes on the minor quests. Balak was let go. ( I did kill him in 3, costing me the Batarian fleet) Jumped on the Cerberus bandwagon with both feet, was pretty renegade; sold Legion, kept David hooked up to Overlord and saved the base among other things, still finished about 60/40 P/R, but it has reversed in 3, even though it looks like it imported as 80/20 P/R.

I've decided to recreate my lost Svetlana Shepard file, my classic Colonist/Ruthless Infiltrator save that I lost when I built a new PC to replace my fried laptop. Born on Mindoir to Veronika and Garret Shepard of Odessa, Ukraine and Regina, NAU respectively. Raised from birth as a farmer and huntswoman, she took her early lessons killing the near-wolves of Mindoir defending the family herds. She put those skills to good use on the day of the slaver attacks, killing at least three before a mortar strike destroyed the outbuilding she had be holding up in. After awakening in an Alliance hospital, she quickly learned that her whole family and many more had been killed in retribution strikes as the slavers found that the fiercely independent colonists made poor candidates for slaves.

A quick enlistment later, Shepard was quickly singled out for her native shooting skills and her forceful manner, being selected for officer training and rapidly climbing the special forces ranks to N7. Her quintessential moment came during the retaliatory Torphan campaign where she led the breaching teams penetrating the well defended pirate bunker on the moon, accepting heavy casualties and refusing all attempts by the pirates to establish terms. After a grueling war of the rats in the warrens of Torphan finally the last redoubt was taken and the leaders quickly threw down their arms in surrender. The pirates, mainly Batarians, but with a smattering of turians, krogan, humans and even a lone asari expected mercy from the Alliance but as per the rules of war they were deemed criminal combatants and pirates and were summarily executed. Shepard's nominal superior,  Major Kyle protested this action but was quickly overruled by Commodore Hackett, CO of the Torphan strike fleet.

Fresh from a stint assisting infiltration tactics instruction at the N7 training academy, the freshly promoted Lt. Commander Shepard is assigned as XO on the new Normandy frigate project, serving under a legend of the Alliance SF community, Captain David Anderson.

I replayed the derelict reaper mission, legion's loyalty mission and the attack on the collectors base.

Observations:

1. Why didn't they make the final fight happen inside a reaper in me3? Alright, rhetorical question, but it's a shame they didn't. The derelict reaper was atmospheric and creepy, they could have made indoctrination attempts/hallucinations happen, there were husks everywhere, it was great setup for jump scares and psychological horror.

2. I still can't figure out the paragon/renegade system. The fact that rewriting the heretics is a paragon choice and destroying them is renegade made me think it was more a matter of diplomatic/thoughtful vs violent/impulsive rather than 'good' vs 'evil'. But then again the paragon/renegade attitude towards Cerberus and preservation/destruction of the collector base make no sense.

3. The collector base has great lighting

Not much tonight, but a bit of this:

Spoiler
  • It's a shame the side missions are unvoiced, but they are better than re-using MP maps for example
  • I like the hark back to Noveria
  • Tali takes fantastic screenshots in combat. She sucks completely during it, but from a screenshot perspective I love having her on the team. I trust you have all noticed that this will be an all female combat team where possible
  • Got some new paragon dialogue with Grunt I had never got before. Not that it makes any damn difference whatsoever, they still think Shep is the second coming
  • I forgot how annoying 'Can it wait Shephard, I've got a lot to do', and variations of, are
  • I'm going to do some stuff on my favourite location of the entire trilogy next: Illium. Such a shame we won't be going back there

What's wrong with re-using MP maps? I thought they were better designed than a lot of the SP maps.

1. That would have been neat, but may have left a "inside a Reaper again?" kind of feeling amongst the player base. But considering they managed to give us a Citadel hub in each game and made each one feel different tells me they could have made an "inside a Reaper" level work. Still, you would have to come up with a reason why Shepard needed to board an active Reaper, and the ability to actually physically board an active Reaper.

2. Paragon/Renegade was never good/evil. I think this was explained in the codex or maybe the ME1 manual, but you are correct: Paragon was supposed to be more about diplomancy, while Renegade was more impulsive. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Better designed to do a horde mode fight yes. Not to tell a little story (which may not involve fighting ). Me2 is far superior in this regard.

From the Mass Effect 1 manual (yes I still have it), page 20:

Paragon and Renegade meters

These meters track your choices throughout gameplay.

The Paragon meter increases when your choices are noble, cooperative, or self-sacrificing. Paragons achieve their goals by doing the right thing in the right way.

The Renegade meter increases when your choices are aggressive, selfish, or ruthless. Renegades achieve their goals by any means necessary.

Started again with ME1 to do my first full on Renegade.
Only I started talking to Jenkins & forgot what an ******* I was & picked up some Paragon points.
But from now on, no more Ms nice girl.
Spoiler

I'm hoping by ME2 or 3, she looks more like her namesake.

Edit: Being full renegade sucks.
I hated shooting Shiala in the back of the head while she knelt down for it.

No idea. It would be interesting if the council or whoever figured out that by destroying Harbinger, the reapers would stop. The other reapers would be lost without Harbinger to lead causing them to return to darkspace

I don't have any explanation on how Shepard and squad could get inside Harbinger to destroy him from within. It would be interesting if that was a possibility

Meaning that they needed more linearity?

Just finished Priority:Earth. (Destroy 'coz this Shep is just too prone to outbursts of rage to trust himself with Control) I somehow managed to miss Morinth completely with the second Cain. Guess I blew up something, somewhere.

Watched James try to hit stuff with the Falcon -- most of the rounds bounced off of cover and blew up in his face. Good thing there's no FF.

Trying to get all the trophies for Armax Arsenal Arena. If the frame rate ever improves/doesn't turn into watching a slide show. Thank god for maxed out Black Widow and maxed out warp ammo with my infultrator class.

Why are you getting frame rate issues, ME3 runs at 60fps on a broken calculator.

I suspect it is because it is a ps3. Which seems like that system got the short end of the port stick.  And not the first time.

Oddly enough it is only the AAA area that I really get any frame rate issues. An odd issue here and there. But so far doing about 9 missions in there every single one runs into frame rate issues were it turns into a slide show some times.

Actually yes, I think so for such small locations. It certainly makes it easier.

I do not "shoot" people. I usually incinerate them, electrocute them, toss them about, rip them apart biotically, or freeze them. I have even been know to use tech armor on them occasionally. ;)

1) That's a cool idea. It would have been better than being on the Citadel, both with the confrontation with TIM and meeting the Catalyst. That said, I really wanted to go to the hidden parts of the Citadel at some point. As much as I love the little Relay Monument that you see at the beginning actually being so important, it was really lame to just land back on the Presidium and go to the Council Chamber. Why was the Conduit needed?

2) It's really supposed to be Idealism vs Pragmatism. Paragon is more diplomatic and sympathetic, while Renegade is more about getting the job done. no matter the cost. It's not supposed to be good vs evil, though sometimes it seems like that because Renegade is willing to accept nasty things if it furthers the goal.
