Started four new Shepards today in Mass Effect 1 (bringing my official total to 24):
Bruno Shepard
Class: Engineer
Background: Colonist
Reputation: War Hero
Alignment: Paragon
Backstory:
Spoiler
Bruno Shepard was born on a small Earth Colony called Mindoir. Bruno was a bright young kid that displayed an interest in technology. But one day, life on Mindoir took a dark turn when Batarian raiders landed without warning and began kidnapping and killing the colonists. When his parents were shot trying to protect him, Bruno ran away in fear, only to be knocked down by a nearby blast before being covered in rubble. He was unable to move, the screams of people he knew growing fainter and fewer in number. He was eventually found and rescued by the Alliance military.
His life shattered, Bruno surveyed the broken bodies crumbled houses around him. He noticed the Alliance military helping survivors and their efforts to restore the colony and he never forgot it. Later in life, despite the offers from several universities, Bruno enlisted in the Alliance military. As the humanity continued to expand in the reaches of unknown space, he wanted to protect the new human colonies from barbaric attacks like he had lived through.
After a series of tests, it was discovered that Bruno was a biotic. He underwent surgery to receive biotic implants. As a biotic with the Alliance he received special training, but he was much more proficient with technology than his biotics. With such late biotic training, he never progressed as far as the other biotics and instead focused his efforts on engineering, electronics, and demolitions. His talent and tenacity as a soldier and engineer earned him acceptance into the N7 program and command of a small unit.
While on assignment with his unit on Elysium, the colony was attacked by pirates. They were outmanned and outgunned, but Bruno and his men rallied together as many of the colonists as they could. He spread out his men among the colonists and they fought back as best they could against the raiders. Using all his training and knowledge and skill, Bruno barked out orders even as he fought alongside the untrained civilians. Through sheer will and determination and not a little luck, they group managed to hold off the raiders long enough for the Alliance military to arrive in force and route the raiders.
The colony and his men called him a hero. Bruno just felt lucky to be alive. His exploit got him noticed by Captain Anderson who handpicked him for a new assignment on board the Normandy SR-1, an expiremental frigate co-designed by a Turian and Human alliance.
Additional notes: Bruno's bonus power is Stasis. I plan for Bruno to romance Steve Cortez in Mass Effec 3 should I actually get that far.
David Shepard
Class: Engineer
Background: Spacer
Reputation: Sole Survivor
Alignment: Paragon
Backstory:
Spoiler
David Shepard was born to a career military family. Both his mother and father served in the military and both came from a long line of military officers. David grew up around the military as his parents served aboard several ships, from frigates to dreadnaughts. Military was in his blood, so as soon as he was of age, he enlisted with the Alliance.
David showed an aptitude for electronics and a determination to succeed. He quickly rose through the ranks as he impressed his superiors with his skill and intelligence. He was soon deployed on a small colony on Akuze to assist in a military research project.
There is an old military saying: War is 99% boredom, 1% abject terror. One night on Akuze, David experienced that abject terror when Thresher Maws attacked. Giant worm-like creatures, Thresher Maws are monsters of flesh and teeth and a hunger for food. Men and women screamed as the Thresher Maws arose from the ground. Buildings heaved and fell, and the ground fell away as the subterranean creatures attacked repeatedly. David ran from building to building, firing whatever weapons he could get his hands on. He spotted a tank, but it soon sank into the Earth as a Thresher Max pulled it under.
The hours felt like days, as exhaustion began to sink in. The sound of gunfire and shouting soon faded and stopped. With a final mournful wail, the Thresher Maws dove back into the Earth, their hunger abated. David, alive and covered in sweat and grime, placed a weary hand on a nearby rock and stared into the distance, the sun rising across the horizon to his back. He gripped his pistol tightly, blankly staring at the carnage in front of him, bracing for another attack. The attack never came.
It took him an hour to piece together the equipment to contact the Alliance. When the Alliance arrived, they found David was the only survivor of the small outpost.
David Shepard earned his N7 rank, and was assigned to Capatain Anderson to serve on the Normandy SR-1, a joint Turian-Human frigate, the first of its kind.
Additional notes: David's bonus power is Slam. I plan for David to romance Tali in Mass Effec 2 should I actually get that far.
Nicole Shepard
Class: Engineer
Background: Earthborn
Reputation: Ruthless
Alignment: Renegade
Backstory:
Spoiler
Nicole Shepard was born to a single mother on the streets of Detroit. At the turn of the century, Detroit had been thriving before an economic downturn left many jobless. Many moved away, leaving a vaccuum soon occupied by less scrupulous individuals. Crime rapidly rose and the local government soon ignored the poverty-stricken areas and focused on the few money-making pockets areas that remained.
Nicole was an intelligent young girl, fascinated with learning, and her mother did her best to supply her young daughter with an education. But tragedy struck as her mother died one night when a man strung out on drugs shot her mother to death. Adrift without an emotional anchor, Nicole ran with some of the local gangs. Violent crime and disease were constant companions to Nicole; she watched as many of her friends died to virulent infections or rival gangs. Nicole managed to survive by her wits and the care of some of the more technically-minded gang members who helped her learn electronic sabotage and hacking.
Soon after Nicole turned 18, a rival gang attacked one her gang's criminal enterprises. She dove to the floor as bullets flew all around her, the blood and flesh of her fellow gang members showered her like rain. The attack was brief -- the rival gang left just as quickly as they had arrived -- but it had scared Nicole like no other event in her life. She ran away and enlisted in the Alliance military, desperate to escape the poverty and crime.
Nicole was not satisfied with being just an Alliance marine, she wanted to be the best damn marine in the entire Alliance military and her superiors soon noticed. It was not long before she was one of the youngest N7 specialists in the Alliance military.
Nicole did not make many friends in the Alliance. Some called her "cold" or "hard", amongst other more unflattering names. Nicole scoffed at them; she knew how the world worked, how the galaxy worked. For those without money or privilege, the galaxy is an unforgiving place, and only the most ruthless or lucky people survive.
Despite her reputation, or perhaps because of it, the Alliance went to her for their most dangerous missions. So when a large contingent of Batarian slavers were cornered on Torfan, sent her to lead the assault. The slavers were well-fortified and bunkered deep. Anti-aircraft guns prevented bombing runs, and bombing would kill any slaves still alive. The Batarians were well-armed and hard the advantage with well-fortified positions. Plus they had bunkered down in caves and mines in the mountainous region.
Major Kyle was officially the commanding officer, but he was under orders to let Nicole lead the assault. Looking at the schematics taken from the arial scans, Nicole planned the assault. Major Kyle objected to her decisions, protesting that they would lose too many men. Nicole did not care; the number of men was irrelevant. This group of slavers were responsible for hundreds, even thousands of lives lost to slavery. If losing dozens of soldiers meant saving hundreds or thousands of future lives, then that was a price she was willing to make.
And dozens did die in the assault. Nicole sent wave after wave of Alliance marines into the caves and mines, the musty air becoming heated with bullets and sweat and blood. Soldiers and slavers died in agony. One soldier protested that they should retreat; Nicole shoved him into incoming fire. The soldier bellowed and he stumbled and fell, but somehow managed to survive the assault with only a few scrapes. Nicole personally led the final push into the mines. In the end, all of the slavers -- numbered in the hundreds -- lay dead. Some slaves that had not been killed during the fighting were attended to by the Alliance.
Admiral Hackett then assigned Nicole to the command of Captain David Anderson, where she soon boarded the Normandy SR-1.
Shawna Shepard
Class: Infiltrator
Background: Spacer
Reputation: Ruthless
Alignment: Renegade
Backstory:
Spoiler
Shawna Shepard was born to two military parents. Growing up, Shawna lived on dozens of ships as her parents took new assignments handed to them by the Alliance military. Growing up around the Alliance, Shawna found herself following in her parents' footsteps and enlisting into the Alliance when she was 18.
Being around the Alliance her whole life, Shawna saw the best of the galaxy, but she also saw the worst. She saw the aftermath of slaver and pirate attacks: broken lives, parents with dead eyes, and children with hollow stares. It made Shawna angry to see so many lives ruined by others, and she knew she wanted to make a difference.
Shawna excelled at her military training and soon set her sights on the N7 program. Mission after mission, Shawna soon distinguished herself from her peers, her skills and talents outshining the others. The Alliance also took notice and began assigning her to lead some of its more sensitive missions.
But humans were not always welcome as newcomers to the galactic community, and groups of pirates, raiders, and slavers began to eye human colonies as easy targets. Shawna saw the aftermath of an attack on Mindoir: the smouldering rubble, the broken and twisted bodies, and the recorded images of humans being treated like animals as they were herded into cages.
The attackers -- a group of Batarian slavers and pirates -- were tracked to Torfan. The Alliance ordered Major Kyle kill all the Batarians slavers on Torfan. Major Kyle, on a recommendation from Admiral Hackett, assigned Shawna to plan and lead the attack.
The Batarians had the advantage, having dug in deep within the natural fortifications of Torfan terrain. But Shawna was determined to make the Batarians pay for their crimes. The assault was bloody. Dozens of Alliance marines died, but for every marine that fell, ten Batarians died. In the end, the assault was a total massacre.
The smell of smoke and charred flesh still stung her nostrils as Shawna walked slowly through the carnage. She noted the ripped and burned bodies of Batarian slavers and slaves. She was responsible, having thrown a cluster of grenades into the area. Could she have spared the slave's lives instead of killing them along with their Batarian captors? Perhaps, but that would have cost her more Alliance soldiers. She was sure she had made the right call.
Shawna was soon reassigned to the Normandy SR-1 under the command of Captain Anderson.
