Tonight Emma did a whole load of N7 missions:

Spoiler

- Again I quite like these, short as they are. They help to build a sense of place, and the interconnecting story is quite neat for some of them

- The Prothean beacon illustrates the massive plot point - and what made Shep actually special - they dropped, the Cipher. The game should have been built around this and finding out more about both the Protheans and the Reapers

- Kasumi actually has quite a few sound bites on these N7 missions which i had not noticed before, must have been added in. It's certainly worth taking her along

- Again this illustrates the massive pacing problem. of course it's even worse once the crew get abducted, because if you don't follow them (and there is no hint at all about whether you should to the consequences of not doing so) they all die. This is frankly ridiculous, as before that arbitrary cutoff point you are free to do whatever the hell you want

- The more I play through ME2 and really analyse it like this the more I am beginning to dislike it and find holes I had never really considered before

I didn't know you could let her go. I guess I'm too jumpy on that Renegade interrupt.

Well, she does pull a gun on you.

So you guessed I meant the beginning of the game where the destroyed ship is referred to to as a Destroyer (you've played the game enough to know that is the case) yet you still felt the need to question what I said? I do not believe that you meant the post as anything other than an attempt to correct what I posted.

The confusion is probably because small Reapers are referred to as Destroyers. The Alliance ship was a dreadnought, not a destroyer. So themikefest probably thought you were saying a Reaper had been destroyed. Had you misclassified it as anything else, there probably would be no confusion.

Bruno Shepard went into the Citadel Archives, talked to the Illusive Man, chased down Dr. Eva the Cerberus robot. Eva nearly got away in a shuttle, but then James crashed his shuttle into Eva's shuttle and they both fell down and crushed Shepard to death. Way to go James, bet that will look good on your yearly review.

(Okay, so Shepard was not crushed to death, but he totally should have been.)

So after a brief fight where Eva knocked out Kaidan before getting shot by Shepard. They went to the Citadel where Kaidan was brought to Huerta Memorial Hospital for treatment, and Shepard went to the council for help.

The council did not help Shepard, but the Turian councilor did tell him how he could help himself. Gee, thanks.

First stop: back to the Normandy where Shepard had a bad dream, then talked to the new crew including shuttle pilot Steve Cortez. Then it was time to talk to Liara to break up with her with a 'Let's just be friends' speech. (Because she did not get the message in Mass Effect 1 where he told her to ****** off, or in Mass Effect after Lair of the Shadow Broker when he told her to just be friends.)

Then it was off to Palaven's moon, Manae, to locate the new Primarch. They killed a bunch of Reaper troops, talked a bit during long stretches of walking/running, then rescued the Primarch from being overrun by Reaper troops. The Primarch wants to bring the Krogan to the war summit. Shepard is sure that will go smoothly.

So tonight I ran into an interesting quirk of ME2. I've only done a few story missions, all the recruitment missions (plus Jacob's / Kasumi's loyalty) and some N7 missions. What does this mean? Suddenly EVERYONE has a problem.

That was absolutely hilarious. I just love the expression on Shepard's face in the first pic, a sort of dawning realization/horror. (Either that or Shepard really has to go to the bathroom... or just did in her pants because of a really nasty fart.)

It's funny really as I hadn't got around to the initial 'no, tell me more about your dead wife' conversations with thane, tali, samara or even garrus.
I just couldn't be arsed doing the usual ship tour.

Rosanne Shepard: Infiltrator. Life long military & decorated war hero.
I was assigned to the new SSV Normandy SR1, the Alliance's most high tech frigate. (The Infiltrator of frigates)
The Council put up a lot of the money & the Turians had all together too much input.
The Turians had the Normandy's first Commander removed after a run in with with the incompetent Turian engineer responsible for the ships limited drive core.
I had my mother look into his replacement, a Captain David Anderson.
He's Earthborn, was the first N7 graduate & a bona-fide war hero from the First Contact War, so I think I can trust him.
But there is a Turian Spectre on board, the ships pilot doesn't trust him & neither do I,
They don't send Spectre's on routine shake down runs.
He's been accessing my service records & I think he was sent here to spy on me. He's like a 2nd shadow.
On the way to see the Captain, Pressly (the ships navigation officer) pulled me aside.
He too was uneasy about having a Turian on board.
Like mine, his Grandparents fought the bas***ds in the First Contact Wars, & he served on the SSV Agincourt
The ship that saved my butt on Elysium. I told him I'd try and find out what was going on.
I stopped to chat with Corporal Jenkins, because I'd heard he was born on Eden Prime. He was excited to have a Spectre on board.
I get the feeling he is always like this, But what he told me about Nihlus, only added to my suspicions.
Captain Anderson is not there when I arrive & the Turian asks me, "how safe is Eden Prime really". Like it was some kind of threat.
Then in came the Captain & says he's going to come clean, we're here on a top secret mission to retrieve some ancient relic, of great technological value.
And that Nihlus had put my name forward as a possible Spectre candidate.
I asked him why a Turian would want a human in the Spectres, and he pissed in my pocket for a bit. It felt all warm, but it still smelt wrong.
Anderson thought that it would be good for humanity if I got accepted.
Just then we got an incoming transmission from Eden Prime & they were under attack.
Anderson ordered me to take Jenkins & Alenko & give the Turian backup to retrieve the Prothean beacon.
We no sooner hit the ground & Jenkins was taken out by some kind of drones.
No sign of Nihlus, but a bit further up we came across the gunnery chief from the transmission.
The rest of her unit was wiped out in the surprise attack by synthetics.
I said she should come along with us, with the loss of Jenkins, we needed someone who knew the area.

Williams thought the synthetics might be Geth, although they hadn't been seen for centuries.
Alenko had heard of them too, I kinda wished I'd paid more attention in history class.
We found some very nice Scorpion light armor in a crate.
It was too big for me, but Kaidans suit had taken a hit in the drone fight & so Williams and I watched & whistled as he clambered into it.
It was just the break in the mood that we needed.
We destroyed a few more synthetics & came to where Chief Williams said she had seen the beacon.
Someone, or something, had taken it.
Just then we got a call from Nihlus, there was a small spaceport ahead & he was going to meet us there.
The Geth had impaled dead humans on tall spikes as some sort of macabre warning or something.
Oh my god, they're still alive.
We take out the zombies & find two of the scientists that had uncovered the beacon.
One of them told us the beacon had been moved to the space port earlier that morning.
The other called Nihlus the messiah, but he did seem a bit stressed.
Still, if Nihlus did orchestrate this attack, it means he's probably got the beacon & an escape plan, and this space port is probably a trap.
Sure enough, on arrival at the meeting place, we are attacked by Geth & more of the reprocessed humans.
We came across three locals that had locked themselves in a prefab unit to avoid the Geth.
One of them let it slip that they where in possession of some Alliance equipment, stolen by smugglers they had let some storage space to.
I convinced Cole to give me the name of his contact.
On the spaceport platform we come across Nihlus's body, shot in the back of the head at close range.
Seems like the Geth had got what they came for and didn't need him anymore.
I kick the bast**ds corpse & then Williams spots something moving behind the crates.
It's a dock worker, he says his names Powell & that another Turian had shot Nihlus. Nihlus called him Saren, so they must have been in it together.
I tell Powell that I know he's been stealing Alliance equipment & that if he had anything that could help us, he should do the right thing.
Gunnery Chief Williams wasn't as nice to him, as she thought those grenades might have help save some members of the 212.
I tell her to let it go & we head off after Saren & the beacon.
We have to clear a few more Geth from the platform before we can take the train.
One of them is a big bugger & I think Kaidan was impressed when I threw a warp at him before shooting him.
We take the train, only to find the Geth are planning to blow the place.
I was hoping Kaidan might offer to disarm the bombs, but no such luck.
Spoiler

With the bombs out of the way, we clean up the remaining Geth, Saren is long gone, but at least the beacon is still here.
It's lit up like a Christmas tree, Williams said it didn't look anything like that when she last saw it.
I called the Normandy, but as Williams moved closer to the beacon, it seemed to be pulling her in.
It was all I could do to just knock her to the ground & the last thing I remember is the smell of her perfume & images of war.
Spoiler

Next thing I wake up in the sick bay of the Normandy with one hell of a headache.
Spoiler

The doc says I gonna be fine & I ask if we recovered the beacon.
Williams said that after I knocked her away from the beacon, I myself was suspended by it, until it disintegrated.
And they had carried me back here.
I assured her it was not her fault, & that seemed to put her mind as ease.
Spoiler

The Captain came in & asked the others to leave.
He knew of this Saren that Powell had mentioned, & that he was a Spectre, known for hating humans.
I said all bloody Turians are racists, but he thought this one could be real trouble
And our only hope was to get the council to revoke his Spectre status.
He told me to go and see Joker, and get him to bring us in to dock at the Citadel.
Outside the gunnery chief is waiting for me. She feels bad for Jenkins & that she is only here because of his death.
I assure her that she earned her place on the Normandy & will be a asset in the days ahead.
With this she smiled the warmest of smiles & once again I caught the faint smell of bergamot & jasmine.
Spoiler

I like the doc, she is pure military. I ask her of her own personal history and then what she knew of Lieutenant Alenko.
She said he suffers a bit because he has the old L2 implants.
I have a cut down version of the L3 implants, I can't throw or lift, but they allow me to warp & I suffer no ill effects.
Kaidan seems like a sensitive guy, and is taking Jenkins death hard. I'll talk to him more later.
Spoiler

I head up to talk to Joker, Chief Williams is in awe of the Destiny Ascension & leans in close to me to get a better view.
Spoiler

We get into dock & I take Alenko & Williams with me for a meeting with the council.
After a long elevator ride down, I realize I left my wallet on the Normandy & we head back up to get it.
Only a mechanic at the door, said the Normandy is undergoing routine maintenance & we can't go aboard.
This seems very strange to me, but I let it slide & return to the lift.
Spoiler

Either Shepard has an extraordinary sense of smell or that is one powerful perfume to smell when wearing a helmet and Ashley is wearing a helmet and armor. What mod are you running to have Ashley be caught by the beacon while playing Femshep? From the writing, I'm guessing an Ashley romance is coming.

I just finished spending some time in ME3 in that weird spot after Manae where you run around and talk to people on the Normandy and Citadel an cruise around the galaxy. Took me about an hour.

Now Bruno Shepard is on Sur'Kesh, ready to put the boots to Cerberus.

Yeah, every time she goes near a working Prothean beacon, all her senses are heightened. Who knew?

What mod are you running to have Ashley be caught by the beacon while playing Femshep?

Not a mod. It's easy as long as you play the default femshep. You just start the game as male shep with default sheploo face and with a female name, then type setgender 1.
You get the Femshep body & voice, but the game plays as if you are male.
If you want to do it with a custom femshep it is a bit more work, with a hex editor.
I did that once, but it is more trouble than it is worth. IMHO

I'm guessing an Ashley romance is coming.

Why, has she said something about me?
I'm not sure if she really likes me in that way, or if she is just being friendly.
I can never tell with her, I'm just waiting for orders.

The line about the wallet was hilarious.

Yes, it was a bit silly. I mean why would you even need a wallet in an age where they scan your DNA for mods.

Tonight Emma did this:

Spoiler

- As missions go, this is quite straight forward and relatively good fun (but not particularly interesting), BUT:

- This is the first time I have played the paragon version. I like the characterisation of her - not afraid to be forceful. I also quite like the alternate route you take. However, what i really hate is the enforced 'autowin' you can get at the end. it would have been improved immeasurably if you did not get Zaeed's loyalty at the end by choosing to not be a renegade and go against him. This is a real let down, I had thought I was a taking a risk - but no, Blue wins out yet again. It's a real failing. instead of being massively pissed off - and rightfully so - you can just do your wonder magic and he's perfectly fine with it. it renders doing the renegade route completely pointless apart from getting the points. It's not even 'renegade' to let innocent people burn to death

- I bloody love the flamethrower, rubbish as it is

- I still do not like Zaeed as a character, nor his voice acting. Sounds like it is trying too hard all round

After our meeting with the council, it was obvious they would do nothing about Saren.
They had the Turian led C-Sec, put a Turian in charge of the investigation. ( Can you say "White Wash" )
Anderson still thought it was worth trying to get more evidence against Saren & put me onto Barla Von,
a Volus financial adviser, who was apparently an agent for someone called the shadowbroker.
Anderson thought that if anyone would have any info on Saren, it would be this bloke, but his help wouldn't come cheap.
Williams thought we should ask the C-Sec Turian for help.
I said Ash, you put too much faith in these aliens, he's either covering for Saren, or he's an incompetent fool.
And my mother always told me, that a man who acts the fool, is not acting.
We head down to the financial district to see what this Volus can do for us.
He recognizes me straight away, and seems to know altogether too much about me, for me to trust him.
I tell him we need the rub on Saren & he offers help, free of charge.
Not suspicious at all, when most Volus have still got the first credit they ever earned.
He said some underworld thug had crossed the shadowbroker & gone to work for Saren.
The shadowbroker had sent a Krogen hitman after him & that I might still catch him down at C-Sec.
Why am I not surprised that C-Sec is trying to protect Sarens lackey.
Spoiler

We get to C-Sec, and while I've never seen a small Krogan, this one is big and ornery.
After a short chat, we ascertain that a Quarian had evidence that Saren was working with the Geth, and this Fist was selling her out to Saren.
I don't usually get aliens to tag along, but I figure if a merc can get to this blokes age, he must be able to handle himself when the fighting starts.
If nothing else, we can use him as cover.
Spoiler

We got to Fist's bar and they were waiting for us. Someone at C-Sec must have tipped them off.
Wrex faced most of the bullets, and I gave him the moral support to dodge them.
Fist soon caved and told us where the Quarian was. I told him I was gonna blow his worthless head off.
Wrex actually did it.
Spoiler

We got to the Quarian just in time, she said she had the evidence, but she didn't feel safe there, so we took her to see Udina.
At first he wondered why we had bought a suit rat up to the Presidium.
Then after hearing the evidence against Saren, he suddenly thought she was indispensable.
I said she was too young to get her involved in this, but he said no, take this stranger on board the Alliance's most advanced warship.
I thought Anderson would back me up, but he said nothing, and it's his ship I guess.
Well, the Normandy is still in maintenance lock down, and Udina couldn't get us an appointment with the council till late it the day.
So we wander around the Citadel and try and stay out of trouble.

Upon leaving Udina's office I heard someone call out "Commander"
He introduced himself as Samesh Bhatia, who Ashley recognized as the partner of Nirali Bhatia from the 212.
For some reason, the Alliance hadn't returned her body to him for cremation.
He said if I wanted to help him I should talk to clerk Bosker, who could be found upstairs in the Embassy Bar.
I assured him we would get this outrage sorted.
Spoiler

We found clerk Bosker lounging in the upstairs bar, martini in hand, & being far too suave & casual as he explained away experimenting on the bodies of our fallen war heroes
The men & women who give their lives so that he may wear his comfortable shoes & live safely on a space station.
He still never got the point, but he did release Nirali's body, for cremation and a dignified funeral.
When we returned to Samesh with the news, he was relieved and I'm sure having Ashley speak so warmly of his wife, helped ease his grief a little.
Spoiler

While we were in the Embassy Lounge, I overheard this guy talking about someone called the consort.
Ash saw through him and he admitted he'd never actually met her.
Spoiler

But then the barman also bought up her name and in doing so, peaked my interest.
Spoiler

Next stop, the Consort Chambers. Nelyna the receptionist is very charming, & quite pretty , in an alien sort of way.
But when she tells me she can make an appointment for me in 3 or 4 months, I said forget it.
Just then, the consorts voice comes across the comm and says she wants to speak with me. (quickest 3 or 4 months I'd ever spent.)
Spoiler

Now I'm not into aliens, but if I was....
Sha'ira had a falling out with a Turian General, & now he was spreading lies about her. Typical, they're all like that.
She asked me if I could have a word with him, soldier to soldier.
Her voice was just hypnotic, so soft and soothing that it made you want to help her.
Spoiler

We're back in Chora's Den, I wonder who owns this place now. Oh, and there's the sleazebag, sitting with all his mates.
It made me feel dirty, being nice to him.
I wish I was more hard nose, and could bully people sometimes, but I promised Sha'ira I would get it sorted.
He told me he'd lied to an Elcor diplomat, so that he would also spread lies about the consort.
I'd better head there next.
Spoiler

I spoke with Xeltan at the Elcor Embassy, he seemed genuinely sorry for the trouble he had caused the Consort.
So back to Sha'ira with the good news.
She was relieved and ah...very grateful. (note to self, full encryption on these)
Spoiler

Well it's getting hot in here, so I think we'll just get Tali's evidence to the Council and go.

My jaw just hit the floor. I hope your dislike of this is because you are limiting your view to the P/R system. This scene is awesome. This is one of the precious few times in the series where Shepard gets to teach a character something and change them. Remember all that blather that Miranda says to TIM at the beginning: the reasons why Shepard is important that never show up in the main plot? This is it right here. Zaeed has always been about himself and getting the job done no matter what happens to anyone else. Here Shepard convinces him to put his personal issues aside and be part of the team. You can't do the former with any other character. Every other character needs their problem resolved.

There are precious few moments like this in the series. The only other major one I can think of in this game is teaching Garrus to let go of his hate and let Sidonus live. You could argue for encouraging Miranda to meet her sister and getting Jack to trust if you romance her.

If we look only at P/R, I see your disappointment because there is no Renegade analog anywhere else.
