Managed to go through the beginning up to Garrus' recruitment mission without any raging...making progress.

Good lord I know, I kept getting stunlocked so I just whipped out my Firestorm and burned all of them.
What was very annoying was the Varren...really...do Varren HAVE to have armor?

I can totally see krogan armoring up their pets. For me the worst were the husks with armor. Seriously?!
It made shockwave completely useless.
And here I am thinking of playing on Insanity when I get around to my next trilogy run. I swore I'd only do it once per game but I am apparently a masochist.

Good point. But boy is it frustrating when they rush you while a Krogan is besides them and they have armor...time to waste my incinerate on this pest. ![]()
Wait what? Husks have armor? You've gotta be kidding me. So, on Horizon with the two Scions and on the Collector vessel with all of those husks...THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE ARMOR?
Oh man, Scions are the only enemies that ever make me rage and cower...now I have to worry about those husks.
I don't think I'm ready to do Horizon today.

I don't really understand Insanity runs. To me they are like Blazin' sauce at Buffalo Wild Wings; too much to enjoy the flavor so all you get is the pain. I don't find the ME combat, particulary in 2 and 3 to be compelling because it's a challenge. I find it compelling to bounce electric shocks off a group, to pull guys off the ground, and to knock people off ledges with concussive shots. I like lighting guys on fire or shattering their frozen bodies. The different defenses are just ways to limit the powers you can use; powers which may be why you even chose a certain class. And it's not in an interesting "can't use fire against the fire monster" sort of way. I like that stuff in a puzzle game or maybe even turn based combat, but not here.

Different strokes for different folks.
I like pushing myself out of my comfort zone when it comes to my favorite games. Something I always do with the games I play.
Or I'm a masochist.
To each his own.
Insanity runs are for people who became bored by how easy the game is. They´re tired of beating it several times and want the maximum level of challenge.
It´s not the normal, intended form of the game, but a nightmarish extremist version of it.
Same thing goes for solo golds and solo plats on MP. The games were intended for teams of 3 or 4 individuals. However, lots of people have proven that it is possible to beat all the waves using a single character.
Before the advent of achievements, games with options for difficulty and mods, people used to accept voluntary handicaps in order to give new flavors to games they had already beaten. Beating the bosses of megaman without changing weapons, finishing mario games without the use of warp-zones nor power-ups, beating golden axe without making enemies fall from the stage nor using magic potions, etc.
I have come to realize that Mass Effect is such a diverse game that it can be enjoyed on multiple levels. So much that prior to starting a play-through I have to make a decision of what is gonna be. If it´s for challenge, then Insanity is the way to go. If I want a balance between challenge and story, then veteran is the most versatile option. If I just want to explore story ramifications, then normal mode is the way. Nowadays I always cheat by hacking the reputation bar in order to aproach the missions and dialogues in the option of my choosing. In the case of mass effect 1, since I totally hate the inventory, as soon as eden prime is done I go to the engineering deck, hack the inventory using console commands and decide on my gear.
Since in the case of console owners they can´t use mods nor console commands to alter the parameters I can see why insanity runs become enticing prepositions.
One interesting aspect of playing on harder levels is that you just don´t rehash and intensity old strategies. No, in many cases you are forced to drastically alter them because enemies are now more aggressive and are all equipped with special protections that need to be dealt with.
Is it my favorite kind of approach to the series?
No.
But an interesting one nonetheless, and a valid one. It can totally hamper the experience of those who wish to enjoy the story since a strict selection of recommended squad-mates is crucial to the mission success. But that´s why normal mode exists, as well as story mode.

This, basically this.
I've had my fair share of enjoyment when it comes to the story and the characters - everything. So, I figure to go in a different approach and test myself in terms of gameplay versatility. But I still like to keep it interesting story-wise so I decided to play as a pure Renegade female which I've never done.
Oh and btw Melbella, you had me worried for nothing. I just got done with Horizon and honestly, the only hard part about it was Harbinger's nonstop projectile spamming and that Praetorian who wouldn't get off my lap. Everything else was fine, didn't even have trouble with the Husks (thank you Grunt I love you bro) or my legendary arch-nemesis...the Scion.

Husks do have armor, but you can also insta-kill them afterwards with Powers like Pull or Throw.
I thought I'd do an Insanity run only once because I wanted to get all the achievements (I like to do that for my favourite games). I played an Engineer first and it was really challenging and sometimes frustrating, because previously I hadn't paid attention at all to the powers, but I slowly learned. I ended up loving it and continuing on Insanity. It gets easier every time, once you know how the enemies work ![]()
That being said, sure, everyone has their own preferences, and I am not one to usually challenge myself, but the combat in ME2 really got to me, and I love seeing how each class plays on Insanity, and which bonus powers do what. I'm still not finished with each class, but it's so much fun, and I guess it will stay this way because there's really a lot diversity to it. The amount of different combinations can give each playthrough a new taste, even if it's the same class.
The different defenses are just ways to limit the powers you can use; powers which may be why you even chose a certain class.
I would say it is quite the opposite, you have even more opportunities to use powers. Take Garrus for dealing with Shields, or use Mordin with Incinerate for armor, and if you're an Adept, you can pull off Warp bombs afterwards for example. The list goes on, there are a dozen combinations to deal with the protection layers, and it is not limiting in any way. Play a Soldier, take off shields/armor yourself with your weapon and freeze enemies with Cryo Blast so you can melee them, or shoot them, or... whatever ![]()
I've watched a lot of Insanity run videos on YT, a lot from users here on bsn, and it was a blast every time. It's fun to watch, some builds are insane, and very unique, and make things seem so easy you just sit there in awe.
But I get it that it's not everyone's cup of tea, I wouldn't have thought it would be for me either ![]()

You have more opportunity to use powers but they don't feel like you are accomplishing anything.
Do people find it fun to have to effectively spam biotic combos in order to strip the protections? You can even strip them faster just by using guns than by using the combos.
In the first game all classes could be made godly. In 2 and 3 it is only the gun based classes that make me feel fully awesome on the higher difficulty levels.

Well maybe you don't, but it feels like that for me. I usually never play on higher difficulties, but ME for me is, while challenging from time to time, very rewarding in that regard.
Yep, it's fun for me, and I don't "spam" them, I use them whenever they are ready and deliver me a strategic advantage. Using powers is much more fun to me than only shooting everything, but then that's preference. What you say about stripping protection faster with guns is not necessarily true. Take the Azure hotel fight in LotSB for example. Anyone with Area Overload can strip multiple shields at once, leaving the whole group vulnerable to quickly deal with them, especially if you trap them in Liara's Singularity and finish them off with Warp. Show me a standard gun that can do that.
I'm sorry you feel that way for 2 and 3. For me all the classes I played so far were fun to play on Insanity. I guess, it's still just preference, as I feel like ME1's combat is the most boring, but to each their own ![]()
Don't get me wrong I play primarily as an Adept, I do use my powers, but it honestly feels at times I would be better off just sticking to my guns. Guns can strip the shields far faster than biotic explosions can.
Biotics simply don't have much purpose other than to stagger or hold an opponent for a brief second in order for you to take them down with, you guessed it, your guns. Go to a Vanguard and the only real effective maneuver is the good old charge/shotgun combo. Charge to stagger, shotgun to finish them off.
Tech powers I actually agree with you, they've become more useful as the series has gone on, while biotics pretty much don't do anything in the second and third games.
I should have specified I was talking about biotics alone. Warp is about the only combat worthy power left in an biotics arsenal.

Oh, I see ![]()
I never use biotic powers for Shields in ME2, I use Overload/ED, or now with my Soldier, I take them off using ARush unless I take Garrus with me. Warp or Reave is better used on Armor and Barriers. Of course you can fling out a Singularity to trap enemies before taking off protection, but then you could always do it the other way around too. That's why I said there are so many combinations, there's many ways to deal with protection, with different squad mates and different methods, and quite fast too. Pull and Throw, and I believe Singularity too, can insta-kill unprotected husks, so that is great for getting rid of a whole group in the fastest way possible.
The only power I'd consider pretty much useless is Shockwave in ME2, but then I've seen someone use it quite nicely.
So, I still beg to differ that biotics do nothing much.
And in addition, in ME3 almost anything can be combo'd off. Warp can be used on shielded enemies and detonated with for example Shockwave, gets rid of a shield just as effectively as Overload, and might damage surrounding enemies.
But anyway, I get if people don't like playing on Insanity, that's fine. Everyone enjoys different things. Let's just leave it at that (don't wanna go even more OT in here).
Edit: But feel free to PM me if you wanna continue this ![]()

Armored Husk rush is EZ as a winfiltrator. Spec Incinerate for area at rank 4 to strip the armor off the entire group, and use cryo ammo(only need 1 point unless you plan on the squad evo) on your SMG or the Viper. Husks get instakilled by freezing. Bring Mordin to make it even easier.
If you hate Scions, Combat Drone is your best friend. Chatikka can keep one stunlocked in its close range attack animation for like half a minute. You can also knock them off the floating platforms with it and cause an instakill in some missions.
I only play insanity because otherwise you can kill everything by spamming single powers at health which is uninteresting. I like the rock paper scissors design that higher protection levels force, especially combined with the differing defense multipliers for weapons.
Edit: But feel free to PM me if you wanna continue this
Will do as I think this is a good conversation. Forgive me if I don't get back straight away though. Stag Do to plan.
From the journal of David Shepard:
First things first: Someone left a copy of Fornax lying around. I have never heard of this magazine, so I picked it up and thumbed through it.
Dear god. No amount of brain bleach will ever get that out of my head.
In an attempt to erase those images from my mind -- or at least to forget about them for a little while -- we traveled into the Armstrong Cluster to deal with the imminent Geth invasion. Based on the data we collected, we identified four systems containing the Geth. We hit two of the systems today, wiping out two of their strongholds. It was a good day.
We just finished scans of another planet. It is cold and snowing. I hate the cold.
Recruited everyone minus Legion today.
Did the Collector Ship mission for the first time on Insanity.
Managed to breeze through it without dying except for that Praetorian. What's with Praetorians? They always seem to target me constantly and follow me everywhere nonstop like we are playing tag.
Hmm, they might be trying to have some romance action with my Femshep or something.
Anyways, did it with Tali+Miranda, piece of cake. I've seen so many sob stories of people having issues with the moving platforms but everything was fine except for Harbingers nonstop projectile spamming (again...)
I beat the trilogy again. I ended up with the perfect ending after a lot of hard work, and I was quite proud. My Lvl 60 Adept FemShep who romanced Garrus chose to destroy the Reapers and survived. She was an almost full Paragon with a bit of Renegade and had nearly 4000 EMS without MP and only Mordin, Thane, Legion, EDI and Anderson died.
Going to change it up now with a more Renegade Shepard who will lose far more than she could ever imagine in my new playthrough I'm working on.

Yeah, it's weird how the enemy attacks you all the time.
Yeah, it's weird how the enemy attacks you all the time.
I keep thinking it's part of Harbinger's obsession with you.
Finally played some ME2 again today. Well, I spent Friday night and half the Saturday at a friend's who started playing ME2 and I was watching him play, it was fun! Seeing someone play this for the first time was really great. Reminder of how it used to be ![]()
Other than that I'm playing a lot Dragon Age right now, I only wanted to play a bit here and there, but I already sank in 40 hours...
And I listen to Vega and Traynor flirting with each other, hahaha. So frigging weird ![]()
But back to ME!
Liara, Jack and I proceeded along the exterior of the Shadow Broker ship, fighting his agents, mechs, drones. Finally we made it inside. We made it through another wave of resistence, then we found Feron. Poor guy was strapped to a chair and had been tortured... He couldn't say much about the Shadow Broker except that he was big, so we set out to see for ourselves. And boy, yep, he was a big one. Never seen anything like it. Talking with that thing didn't help at all and a remark Liara made got him really mad. I could just hurl Liara out of harm's way, and when I looked back, Jack had been trapped under some rubble. Sh*t. I couldn't see if she still breathed, but there was no time, the Broker attacked immediately. Fortunately, the fight was over soon.
And Jack was up again, I was relieved she was alright.
Then comm chatter... agents reporting in, waiting for a response. Liara took over, and so she became the new Broker. Wow. Not bad. Can't hurt to have a friend like that, huh.
I had a chat with Feron and then I invited Liara to come to the Normandy, it was great to finally spend some real time together again. And also that she was way more relaxed now. I'm glad she could do what she wanted.
After Liara left I went to see Tali. She... uh... somewhat confessed her feelings for me. I didn't want to hurt her, but I had to tell her I'm not interested. I've got Jack. I hope.
Some pics again:
Contrary to the exterior ship part (ran out of ammo at some point for the Vindi...), the Broker fight went unexpectedly smooth. Liara's Warp to knock him back, then shooting the crap out of him. I didn't even move from the initial position for all 3 phases
And the Viper was a beast here, really awesome.
Well, for today I'm back to DA. Might do some Vega dialogue stuff over the next couple days.
Took a break from Rise of the Tomb Raider to catch up on..

I just had the weirdest thing happen. I bought the ME Trilogy last year and even played ME1 a week ago, but today I went to start a new game and received an update. WTF kind of update would take that long to receive for a game that's 8 years old???
