From the journal of David Shepard:

We went to a planet called Haestrom to go pick up Tali. Someone painted boobs on my armor. Not funny!

Using Kaidan and EDI's Overloads on those CAT6 Heavies Omni-Shields more times than I can count, before retaking the Normandy with renewed purpose after finding the space hamster in the trash (my first playthrough where I took the time to buy the space hamster on the Citadel in ME2). Those squeaks were always welcome after missions in 2 and ME3.  :)

Also read some of Foundation for reminder on Brooks as a character.

From the journal of David Shepard:

Thanks to that security upgrade that fixed the Omni Gel hack technique, my squadmates can no longer write in my journal. To compensate, they have now started messing with me in other ways. Not sure who did it, but someone managed to paint my armor pink, just before the next mission. I like the color pink as much as the next guy, but I kind of stand out on the battlefield looking like that; I get shot at enough as it is without becoming a walking "shoot me" sign.

Perhaps David could lay a trap? Do a bit of sherlocking? Hamster cam? B)

William's night turned out better than expected when Liara showed up and told him she wanted to be with him. So, very refreshed, he drove through Ilos and onto the Citadel, which turned out to have a mass relay in it. The Prothean VI, Vigil, had explained what Saren and Sovereign were after on the Citadel so William, Liara and Wrex proceeded to track down Saren once they got there. William convinced Saren that he was indoctrinated and he ended up killing himself. Only to be taken over, maybe, by Sovereign and turned into a zombie Frankenstein type thing that they eventually dispatched. Killing this thing seemed to break Sovereign's concentration and the Normandy led the way to defeat the Reaper almost at the expense of their fearless leader when debris rained down on his position.

Afterwards, the Council (who William had saved at the expense of many human lives), decided to admit humanity to the Council. William recommended the current ambassador, Udina, to be the new Councilor from the Alliance. He thought a professional politician, even a snake like Udina, was what was needed to work with the snake-like professional politicians currently on the Council. And then he rode off into the sunset with Liara at his side.

****And thus ends my first insanity run. Annoyed that I didn't get the Asari achievement since Liara was on literally every major and minor mission after she was picked up in the first major mission. Insanity wasn't too bad after I got through the 1st couple of major missions and got good guns and armor. Now William's story will continue in my 1st insanity run on ME2.

For Liara, you pretty much have to ignore all Citadel sidequest on your first visit. Make a beeline to become Spectre (go to the council > recruit Garrus and Wrex > Fist > Tali > Council), then immediately go to the Normandy and pick up Liara). Then bring Liara everywhere with you.

And you can't get both human squadmate achievements in one playthrough. I tried.

I finally banged Jacob and then I killed, let me count...6. Six people! At the Collector base and then giddily handed it over to The Illusive Man. I know, I screwed up. I didn't intend for Morinth to survive, but she seems to be pretty good at doing that. Otherwise though, good run!

From the journal of David Shepard:

I had a long day on Illium today. I went to go help Miranda find her sister Oriana. Someone painted a big yellow smiley face on my armor chest piece. I don't think my squadmates realize how difficult it is to try to be intimidating to the bad guys when you have a big yellow smiley face painted on your armor. Although I think one guy may have actually died from laughter?

Miranda's father hired some Eclipse mercs to stop us from getting to Oriana. They did not stop us, but they did slow us down. We made it to the drop-off point to find the Eclipse leader talking with Niket, an old friend of Miranda's. It seems Miranda's father paid Niket to deliver Oriana to him. I convinced Miranda not to shoot him and we tried to find a better solution for Oriana, but then the Eclipse leader shot Niket and we got into a big fight. In the end, we won, the Eclipse lost, and Oriana was able to join her family and continue her life. I even convinced Miranda to go speak to her sister.

Then it was off to go recruit Samara, the Justicar. As with everything else so far, a simple chat was out of the question. Seems a Volus merchant was murdered, some Eclipse mercs were causing trouble in the area, and Samara was killing a bunch of the Eclipse mercs while trying to find someone they smuggled offworld. The situation was complicated: Detective Anaya was told to detain Samara, Samara would go along peacefully for 24 hours before forcing her way out if not let go because something, something, Justicar code.

Anyway, I agreed to go find the name of the ship used to smuggle out the person Samara was after, and in exchange Samara would come help me on my mission. Good enough. I convinced a Volus merchant named Pitne For to help me into the Eclipse base.  He had made a shady dealing with the Eclipse mercs and in return they were trying to kill him and had already murdered his partner, the aforementioned Volus merchant. He gave me a pass he had copied and we went hunting. I killed a bunch or mercs along the way, including a gunship, but did spare one Asari who said she was new and did not know what the mercs were really like. I regretted that decision later when I discovered an audio log of her saying she had killed killed the Volus merchant. I am too trusting at times.

I also discovered a log showing Pitne For was a smuggler as well as a swindler. And then I ran into another partner of his, a Volus who had been injected with a lot of drugs by the Eclipse and was as high as a kite. He wanted to go fight the Ecplise by himself, but after a gentle nudge, he went to go sleep it off.

After a brief fight, we killed the remaining Eclipse mercs, and found the name of the ship. I gave the name of the ship to Samara and she agreed to come with me, saying an oath that would allow her to follow me without breaking the Justicar code. I gave the detective all the evidence I had collected on the murderer and Pitne For, then headed back to the Normandy.

Now to clean off my armor again. I swear, I have got to set up some surveillance equipment at some point.

* * *

Side note: I am disappointed that I was not able to kill Wasea before she lifted the crates to the next stage.

From the journal of David Shepard:

What a rough day.

First, the Illusive Man called, saying he got a great lead on the Collectors. Seems the Turians had disabled a Collector Ship; The Illusive Man had intercepted the transmission and told us to go check it out.

Second, someone had stuck bunny ears on my helmet and a bunny tail on the back of my suit pants. Everyone found it hilarious except me. EDI refused to tell me who did it.

Third, we boarded the ship and were immediately creeped out. It was like the inside of a giant insect hive. We found the remains of humans just scattered into piles of mush, the victims of some sick unknown experiments. We also found a lot of empty pods. Seems they took a lot of colonists.

Fourth, we found that the Collectors were experimenting on themselves, and EDI found from the research that the Collectors were once Protheans, transformed by the Reapers! Extraordinary, and so incredibly sad. That would be our fate if the Reapers were not stopped. But first, the Collectors.

Fifth, I picked up a new weapon. Assault Rifles fit a nice niche between my primary pistol and SMG.

Sixth, this ship is huge and there were a lot of empty pods. A whole heckuva lot of pods. It looked like they were going to target Earth they had so many pods. Not a thought I want to think about for very long.

Seventh, the whole thing was a trap! The Collectors ambushed us, the signal used to lure us in was a fake (and the Illusive Man knew it was a fake) and we had to get out before the ship powered up and took off. It was a harrowing journey, but we managed to escape the Collector ambush, get back to the shuttle, and get out of the system before the Collectors could destroy us.

I was not happy with the Illusive Man, but he was right: we needed information on the Collectors and we got it. We got a lot of information actually, including that they use an advanced IFF to use the Omega-4 relay. More good news: Cerberus had found a derelict Reaper 'corpse' floating out in space. A Cerberus team was on it, working to study the Reaper and get the IFF. The bad news: the Cerberus team had gone silent.

Looking forward: I have decided to continue building up the team. Everyone has something they want me to help get done (except Kasumi since I already helped her with it). I will help the crew first, then go to the Reaper IFF. I also need to help Hackett and go rescue his friend Dr. Kenson, as well as check out this Project Overlord that fell silent. And I also need to give Liara intel on the Shadow Broker that she should find useful.

I will sleep on it, then figure it out tomorrow, right after I fix my armor. Seriously, why bunny ears?

I bought a new Intel Processor and motherboard because of the AMD black pixel glitch in the first Mass Effect.

Yes. I replaced parts in my system solely because of one game.

William woke up to someone screaming at him to get out of bed. Unfortunately, it wasn't Liara. And worse, the last thing he remembered was throwing Joker into an escape pod while the Normandy was in the process of being destroyed and then floating around in space as his oxygen leaked out.

Assuming that he had been rescued, he struggled into his armor while the strange voice told him that the facility was under attack. Instinct took over and he dispatched the mechs that were attacking him but his world got upended when he met a guy named Jacob, who told him that he had been in this Cerberus facility hospital for 2 years. Eventually he got off the facility with the person in charge of 'bringing him back', a phrase William found a little unsettling. The guy in charge of Cerberus, called the Illusive Man (or TIM), told him that human colonies had been disappearing and that he wanted William to figure out what was going on and stop it. After going to the latest colony hit he ran into Tali of all people. Based on some recordings from the Quarian Tali was there to find, Miranda recognized the creatures doing the abductions as Collectors.

Remembering his past dealings with Cerberus, William was just a bit skeptical of TIM's motives and wanted his own crew back for this mission but apparently they had scattered like the wind after his 'death.'  Except that TIM, realizing that some friendly faces may be necessary, had hired Joker and Dr. Chakwas to crew on the new version of the Normandy that he had also built. Now to get to recruiting some of the other guys that TIM had suggested. Starting with a scientist on Omega....

From the journal of David Shepard:

Samara wanted me to help her go after the criminal she was chasing on Illium: her daughter, Morinth. Morinth is something called an Ardat-Yakshi. Ardat-Yakshi cannot mentally bond with other people, instead they kill the partner. The euphoria an Ardat-Yakshi feels when they kill like this is highly addictive. We needed to put a stop to it.

Samara discovered Morinth was on Omega. We found the mother of Morinth's latest victim, and after talking with her and looking at her daughter's things, we laid out a plan: we would go to the Afterlife's VIP section where I would attempt to lure Morinth out of hiding and come talk to me. Then, I would hopefully convince her to invite me back to her apartment where Samara would rush in and kill her.

And it worked. Can't say I wasn't scared, but Samara came in and I made sure Samara killed Morinth. Glad that is over with. I don't want to think of what would have happened if we failed.

From the journal of David Shepard:

Tali was being accused of treason by the Quarian Admiralty Board, and so I brought Tali to the Quarian fleet and went inside to watch the trial and be there for Tali as emotional and moral support.

I had set up surveillance cameras by my armor so I would know if anyone messed with my armor. I should not have bothered since Tali and Thane decided to paint "I'm with Commander Stupid" on their armor instead. That did not exactly endear me to the Quarian Admirals, especially when we found out I was supposed to be representing Tali at the trial.

The trial was a sham and it became an even bigger mess when they told us that the Geth had seized control of some laboratory ship that Tali's father (Rael) was working on. Quarian strike teams had been unable to retake the ship. I volunteered to go take back the ship and find evidence of Tali's innocence. Before leaving, we talked to some of the admirals. Seems that the Admirals were discussing plans to go to war with the Geth and retake their homeworld, and Tali was being used as a pawn in the discussions. Great.

The Geth were dug in deep on the ship, but ultimately were no match for us. We found Rael's body and evidence that Rael was running experiments on the Geth without any safeties. Tali begged me to not turn over the evidence, since she wanted her dad to be spared from the backlash that would result, even though he was already dead. So at the trial, I...

... avoided the subject of evidence entirely and made an impassioned speech about Tali and her contributions to the galaxy and the Quarian race. Somehow it worked and they dropped all charges against Tali. Tali was grateful.

With that bit of trouble out of the way, I can now get some sleep then go help two of my squadmates who have some problems on the Citadel that need to be taken care of.

From the journal of David Shepard:

So i went to the Citadel to help Thane look for his son and prevent an assassination. I would have worn my armor but it was missing and EDI refused to tell me who stole it or where it was located. Jacob being a nice guy (I think) loaned me one his Cerberus uniforms. i had to use lubricant (don't ask) to squeeze myself in the suit. The thing was so tight I did not have much range of motion. Plus the pants kept riding up into my butt crack. Although i have to say that there was quite a bit of room in the crotch area. Quite a lot of room, actually. I don't want to think about it.

Getting back on topic, we asked Commander Bailey for some help locating Thane's son. Luckily, a C-SEC officer had reported that a Drell had been seen recently talking to a guy named Mouse. Turns out Mouse was an old acquaintance of Thane's. We tracked him down and we convinced him to tell us who had hired Kolyat. He gave us the name of a guy named Elias Kelham. Mouse also gave me a copy of a Commander Shepard VI. Now i just have to find a place to put it.

We went back to talk to Bailey. The bad news was that Kelham and Bailey had an underhanded deal going on. The good news was that Bailey was going to help us anyway and he had one of his men arrest Kelham. Kelham's lawyer showed up almost immediately, so we had to interrogate him fast while Bailey ran interference. Luckily, I managed to sweet-talk Kelham into telling us the name of Kolyat's target before the lawyer arrived. I hoped Bailey doesn't mind that Kelham's fee just went up.

The target was Turian politician named Joram Taleed, and he was running for Zakera Ward council. He was running on race politics, mostly anti-human. And as Thane and I tracked his movements -- we were on the lookout for Kolyat -- we also found that Taleed was dirty, shaking down businesses for money. After following him, Kolyat showed up to make his move, but I yelled at Kolyat which caused him to hesitate. Taleed ran and Kolyat pursued while Thane and I ran after Kolyat. Kolyat eventually holed himself up in Taleed's apartment, holding Taleed hostage while the situation spiraled out of control. Thinking quickly -- because I wanted out of Jacob's uniform as soon as possible -- I distracted Kolyat with a gunshot, then disarmed him. C-SEC took him into custody.

Back at the precinct, I talked to Bailey and worked out a deal where he would have Kolyat work for him outside of normal C-SEC channels. I threw in my Spectre support to make sure that Kolyat stayed out the prison system. He owes me.

Then it was off to find Fade and track down Sidonis, the teammate of Garrus who had betrayed his squad on Omega. After intimidating a Volus that was pretending to be Fade -- and scaring off his two idiot Krogan bodyguards -- we discovered that Harkin was Fade. i remember Harkin back when i was tracking down Saren. Harkin was a crude drunken loser that played loose with the rules when he wasn't outright breaking them. But unlike Garrus who wants to break the rules to make a difference to the innocent, Harkin broke the rules to only benefit himself.

Harkin was working with the Blue Suns at a foundry on the Citadel. We went there and when Harkin recognized Garrus and me, he ran. We chased after him, cutting down all the Blue Suns that got in our way, along with a few mechs. We finally caught up with Harkin and convinced him (with force applied by Garrus of course) to set up a meeting with Sidonis. Garrus was then about to shoot him, but I stopped him just in time. We called C-SEC as we left. We found out later that C-SEC caught him soon after.

At the meeting with Sidonis, I stopped Garrus from taking the shot and talked with Sidonis. Sidonis was a broken man, regretting his decision and having nightmares along with a deep depression. Garrus let him go and Sidonis promised to make it up to him somehow. Garrus seemed fine with the result, but mentioned that he likes seeing the world in black and white but has trouble with gray areas. Can't see i blame him.

Back on the Normandy, Jacob and Garrus had to pry me out of the uniform it was so tight. For a moment i thought they were going to have to cut me out of it. How dos Jacob wear these things?

From the journal of David Shepard:

I got my armor back just in time to go help Jack blow up the Cerberus facility where they kept her as a kid. Tali was the one who gave me my armor back. Such a sweet person, that Tali. We have gotten close over the time together on the Normandy. We both feel an attraction towards each other, although she is still rather hesitant because of her immune system. I told her we would take it slow. She agreed to that.

Which makes it hard for me to know whether i should be angry or laugh at discovering she had installed some program called "Nerve Stim Pro" into my hardsuit, and then programmed it to activate at random intervals. It made helping Jack a rather... uh,... troubling.... experience.

The facility was run down and being overrun by aggressive foliage. It was also not empty as Blood Pack mercs were running through the place for some reason. Jack told me about her experiences in the facility, as they drugged her and forced her to fight. We also found out that they were experimenting on other kids so their experiments would not harm Jack; they wanted to mold Jack into some sort of human super-biotic. Jack was not pleased at that revelation.

We finally found out who hired the mercs: some guy named Aresh who had also been at the facility with Jack. He wanted to restart the facility because he was crazy. i convinced Jack to spare his life. He ran, then we planted the bomb and got out of there.

Then Jack and Miranda got into a shouting match back on the Normandy. I managed to calm them both down and they agreed not to kill each other, at least not until our mission was over. i'll take what I can get with those two.
