Steve Cortez is the sorriest excuse for a character to ever grace the Mass Effect series, brought ME3's story down a lot...

I can see why people weren't really into Steve's romance arc. For me the problem with his romance wasn't so much the depth, it just seems cruel of them to write him the way they did knowing how they were ending the game. It just makes people who romance him look like jerks for putting him through that again. No offense to people who romance him, I just feel really bad for him.

I know what you mean. I feel terrible for all of the romances for this reason. Tali? First love lost. Same thing for Liara, especially since she saved Shepard the first time. Kaidan just kept telling my Shep over and over, "I can't lose you again." I just about bawled when I saw the look on his face when Shepard steps back away from the Normandy rescue. Etc, etc.. The endings were just damn cruel to the LI's. I mean, especially since Shepard (as a Paragon response) kept reassuring them that it wasn't going to be goodbye- that they were going to survive it to find each other in the end. I just don't find Destroy to be acceptable for most of my Shepards.. so.. headcanon it is. :(

@Andy

Look like somebody on the mod team felt the thread was a time bomb and didn't like where it was going. So they closed it without an explanation.

If that's the case, this thread is in danger as well.

I see Shepard as the central pillar around his entire romance arc. He wouldn't date any other human.

He's obviously open to xeno sex since he gets together with Tali (however I may dislike the pairing and the way they handled it...). He has four possible flirtations/romantic encounters throughout the series now, all female and two of them are interspecies. Not really enough for a pattern, but I think if he's able to find both Shepard and Tali (who we now know looks ridiculously human under that helmet) attractive, then it's safe to say he might consider other human women down the line. But I'm getting OT.

I think a lot of people headcannon Shepard survived i Destroy and Bioware kind of implying that he survived as well. I find him too sensitive for my taste, so I didn't romance him. My main romance is usually just mShep with either Kaidan or Tali. I haven't had the time to try femShep yet simply because there is no real incentive to and I'm probably the only person who doesn't like Garrus.

haha, I'm a pretty selfish guy so.... Yeah. I don't care about what others feel. I would have traded Liara, Steve, Vega, traynor, Javik and that dumb b!tch allers for one. ONE ME2 character. Except Jacob. No one likes Jacbo. Not even Jacob.

If you romance him you get to smack him in the Citadel DLC.  And who wouldn't want that?

Good. Who the f*ck cheats on Shepard?!?? Especially with some bore like Brynn or whatever her name was, what a bore. If your gonna cheat on a bad ass hot chick like Shep do it with Aria or some gal like that. Brynn???? What a joke. All my femsheps Romance Liara. I couldn't imagine being a femshep Jacob romancer, what slap in the face.

I'm.....sort of on the fence on that one, i personally don't like the standard romance at all, because to me (just making it clear we're being subjective, space waifu/manfus is srs busnss :D ) it feels a bit one sided in the sense that many Sheploos look like they're 40 years of age, and Tali seems 20 something (i dunno the actual age) from her mannerisms in my eyes.

First off, there is only one Sheploo. :P

Second, from ME2 to ME3, Shepard is 31-32 years old while Tali is 24-25 so that's not a huge age difference in my eyes (for additional reference, Jack is the same age as Tali).

Typicall cheaters end up with one another. It takes like minds to disregards obligations to other people.

Look it at this way: If they cheat on you, they usually end up with someone that cheats on them.

Oh shut it, you knew what i meant :P

I get the age, but i've seen very few mansheps that look the age.

Considering that Quarian and Turian couples aren't exactly as frowned upon as Turian/Human (they made a movie out of it ffs), as much as i hate it Talibrations isn't an unrealistic eventuality, if improbable.

Of course it all depends on whether he was written differently, i'm just saying he'd be a perfect character to introduce the gay alien romance.

The "depressed gay guy" card? How often do you actually see that to constitute it as a "card"? If a character who's problem you're describing (which are purely optional and avoidable) are bringing the quality of the ENTIRE STORY down, then I think that's a "you" problem.

The majority of the OP makes me wish I was illiterate.

This post wins the thread.

And well done, your funniest post in a while...

Yeah, this is one of the truest statements about people, relationships and "love". I've been cheated on in real life. Thought I was a loser, then find out later that the little sl*t be cheatin' on their new guy. classic Some people just suck at life.

Oh I would disagree. See generally people who are willing to be with somoene that is cheating on their partner, they are usually cheaters themselves.

People of a more loyal nature won't have it.

I've been with people who cheated on me. The people they were with knew they were cheating. Then my partners got cheated on by them.

Ha

Go figure.

So you didn't like him for being a depressed character? Even though he's pretty outgoing and nice and works hard even though the galaxy is being destroyed, plus his husband died, but he's a little depressed so that's a problem? Fine, I can see how that's a bit cliche'd in terms of story, but what does being gay have to do with anything? He just happens to be gay. Deal with it.

That would only apply if the cheaters be with someone who know they were fooling around though.

What can I say? Life sucks sometimes, and some people are walking manipulations.

All I could offer is that one takes heart in the fact that if you get cheated on, it likely wasn't your fault. It's also probably best it happened, because the relationship was nothing more than a farce.

On my second playthrough just after Thessia and I'm liking him more this time.

Still I feel the whole gay thing is kind of forced - I am always feeling like he is hitting one me if I act nice towards him.
Traynor was much more subtle and as a result way better imo.

Ironically enough, Cortez doesn't flirt directly with maleShep while Traynor's lines were very suggestive toward femShep during her visit.

True, it's a concern for all of them. But I still feel the worst for Steve.

Tali and Liara are both young and they have time to come to terms with it and love again, especially Liara. As an asari she'll have to face that loss sooner or later anyway, it's just a fact of her long lifespan. It's a little worse for Ashley/Kaidan because they had to go through it once already and are just getting back to where they started with Shepard. Garrus is a soldier and he's used to loss, although it might eat at him that he couldn't be there the same way it ate at him when he thought he could've prevented his team dying on Omega. I think Traynor would handle it the best; she barely had time to get used to Shepard in her life so I don't think she'll fall apart without her.

But then there's Steve. He was essentially suicidal over Robert, then you help him get over it in time for him to fall for Shepard... and if you pick Control/Synthesis, he loses Shepard too. That's beyond sad, it's just wrong.

I'm curious what lines you heard where you felt cortez was hitting on you?

Honestly, I'm getting a little irritated with this "If I'm nice to the gay guy he'll start hitting on me and forcing himself on me" attitude.

I like Cortez, I like how his personal story arc was handled and I think that, as a person, he's a great LI. The only thing 'wrong' with him, I think, is how the romance is initiated. I don't doubt the sincerity of his feelings for Shepard if he's romanced, but it just feels a bit... strange... to romance someone who just made peace with the death of his husband. Moving on isn't something that happens overnight and I think that Cortez still thinks of Robert (his late husband) often, it's just that those memories don't form a burden anymore. But is he really ready to start a new relationship? Should Shepard really depend on him, of all people, as his emotional crutch? Just a few questions I would ask myself before romancing him.

But I guess it doesn't matter anyway, because I only play as FemShep. And most of my FemSheps find a dear friend in Cortez, someone who they feel they just... connect with. No forced small talk or stuff like that. Talking to Cortez feels very easy and natural somehow.

How in particular do you feel he was poorly implemented?
