Steve Cortez is the sorriest excuse for a character to ever grace the Mass Effect series, brought ME3's story down a lot...

How was he poorly VA'd?

Worst ME characters;

1. Space Casper
2. Allers
3. Cereal Boy
4. Jacob

Cortez is fine.

Implying those characters justify other characters.
But really what a stupid argument.

You think Tali was done badly, look at the ending.
Tali is fine.

Sorriest excuse for a character? Hardly. Kai Leng, Diana Allers, Space Ghost...

But I guess there was a bit of the "tragic gay guy" about him. Maybe some people here were too young to pay attention, but the way gay characters were often portrayed in mainstream entertainment was as "tragic" in some way. I guess it was meant as a way to evoke sympathy. You have to remember, though, that there was a desperate need for some sympathy, with governments withholding money for AIDS research at a time of a devastating epidemic and so on.

Well you should be because they need some ridiculous argument in order to justify gay men forcing themselves on others.

I'm curious what lines you heard where you felt cortez was hitting on you?

Honestly, I'm getting a little irritated with this "If I'm nice to the gay guy he'll start hitting on me and forcing himself on me" attitude.

Well he was constantly saying:

"I was worried about you!" in such a tone that a LI would do it, not a comrade. I guess I'd describe his mannerisms as feminine. That is just the impression that I got - it's definately not a very "bro" like relationship that you get with Garrus, James or Kaidan.

And I'm not saying that being nice to people leads to instantly being hit on - that is not my world view. What I am saying is that is how I felt in this game specifically.

I never liked him either and picked renegade responses, but sorriest excuse for a character? That belongs to the dumb ass space kid.

I think your reading into cortez' concern a bit too much, or not in necessarily the right way.

Women have a different relationship with other women than they do men. Guys who have friends that are girls will often express concern or feelings in general differently than they would with a girl.

It's the same with cortez and a manshep vs femshep. It's not an advance, or flirtation, it's just perception. If you've played both genders you'll notice the way he says things change.

He adresses femshep the way I see girls address each other, and manshep the way girls address their male friends.

Also, as someone who is homosexual himself, I can attest that usually we can address women a little more matter of factly because...well...let's face it, we don't date women so we make little effort to understand or appease them.

Cortez is expressing concern more sincerely because he's likely more comfortable around men than women, not because he's flirting.

Mine too!  I really loved how he was sort of a geek when it came to ships and shuttles, always found that endearing.

Yeah I guess it could be that. Once again, I have nothing necessarily bad to say about Cortez, it's just that I am that kind of person that does not like too much care and attention, so it's especially wierd when it comes from a guy. Nothing against gay people whatsover.

Agreed.

That also reminds me of his exchange with joker in Citadel.

Cortez: "That makes us a perfect target!"
Joker: "Noo that makes us the bait, do you want me to drive?"
Cortez: "No!"

Pilot fight!
I love that guy.

I liked Steve. I thought he was a perfectly pleasant, well rounded character. If I ever get around to playing the game again, I'll probably do his romance. With a Shepard named Adam, of course.

I wish they'd put more detail into his character model's hair though. He looked like one of those guys who dye the top of their heads to cover the fact they're going bald. He reminded me of Silvio Burlusconi.

Sorry.  I had to pull the Wrex: "but they have so many of them (ideas)...so sometimes I pretend to listen...Let's just say Krogan females have tempers too."  One of the best spot on lines from the game.

Personally thought Steve was a bit weak and cliche initially, but dlc content really expanded his character. Has some of the best lines in Citadel. Something about ropes, guns, knives, thresher maws...and him and Joker as "the bait."

He was a horrible character, honestly a professional solider crying all over the ship, I find it hard to empathise with anyone who would do that when they are at work. The galaxy is getting wiped out and he is crying about one person.

I like Cortez, I like how his personal story arc was handled and I think that, as a person, he's a great LI. The only thing 'wrong' with him, I think, is how the romance is initiated. I don't doubt the sincerity of his feelings for Shepard if he's romanced, but it just feels a bit... strange... to romance someone who just made peace with the death of his husband. Moving on isn't something that happens overnight and I think that Cortez still thinks of Robert (his late husband) often, it's just that those memories don't form a burden anymore. But is he really ready to start a new relationship? Should Shepard really depend on him, of all people, as his emotional crutch? Just a few questions I would ask myself before romancing him.

.

This is a problem with ANY same-game love interest...I've always hated how quickly love interests get formed and it's why I liked the fact that to romance Garrus, you HAD to have recruited him in ME1. I didnt mind DA2 since the whole game takes place over the better part of a decade IIRC but even DAO I thought was way too short a time frame...

(It was possible not to recruit either him or Wrex - yeah that statistic we were arguing about last week on the infographic ALSO includes people that never recruited Wrex in ME1 and yes there are people that didnt)
