Steve Cortez is the sorriest excuse for a character to ever grace the Mass Effect series, brought ME3's story down a lot...

I like Cortez, I like how his personal story arc was handled and I think that, as a person, he's a great LI. The only thing 'wrong' with him, I think, is how the romance is initiated. I don't doubt the sincerity of his feelings for Shepard if he's romanced, but it just feels a bit... strange... to romance someone who just made peace with the death of his husband. Moving on isn't something that happens overnight and I think that Cortez still thinks of Robert (his late husband) often, it's just that those memories don't form a burden anymore. But is he really ready to start a new relationship? Should Shepard really depend on him, of all people, as his emotional crutch? Just a few questions I would ask myself before romancing him.

.

This is a problem with ANY same-game love interest...I've always hated how quickly love interests get formed and it's why I liked the fact that to romance Garrus, you HAD to have recruited him in ME1. I didnt mind DA2 since the whole game takes place over the better part of a decade IIRC but even DAO I thought was way too short a time frame...

(It was possible not to recruit either him or Wrex - yeah that statistic we were arguing about last week on the infographic ALSO includes people that never recruited Wrex in ME1 and yes there are people that didnt)

This reminds me of being ninjamanced (I was young... ish and naive at the time) by Jaheira in Baldur's Gate 2. She lost Khalid (?) at the beginning of the game. So it's not like BW haven't done this before.

I think the romance was bugged too, and I didn't have an interner connection that didn't cut off for long enough to download the patches at the time. Plus the other LIs were simply more interesting for me.

@Spambot

I got ninjamanced in ME1 once by kaidan first time I played a femshep.

I didn't realize that in order to not romance him I have to be a b----.

Steve was okay. He's not a great character, but he served his purpose. Diana Allers on the other hand may be my least favorite video game character of all-time. I'd rather have Waluigi in her place.

i don't like him either. too much the cliché-gay, some kind of boring. just the conversations
between him and vega are funny.

Kaidan basically ended up as my default Virmire sacrifice because I was wary of being ninjamanced by him with my male Shep and kept kinda aloof. I got to know Ash much better because I was trying to play the field with her and Liara. By the time I got to Virmire, I felt I knew Ash much better and I didn't want to feel like I was punishing her for refusing me because of Liara.

I just assumed that he was a potential LI for male Shep. I mean, why not? And the intro animation for conversations like him was framed like there was something going on, the same as with Liara and Ashley.

I guess someone could say it was a homophobic reaction. I prefer to think it was ninjamance-phobia, but there it is. These game mechanics cloud the issue.

Never felt like that with Cortez though. One of the reasons I liked him.

I'm wondering where the cliche comes from. I don't see him snap his fingers or watching Bravo. :P

The best thing about Cortez was how they handled him being gay. He said "husband" and Shepard did not even show the slightest sign of being disturbed by that although he/she didn't know before if I recall correctly. They also never talked about him being gay, not in a way that they would be avoiding the topic but in a way that suggests that there is no need to talk about it. While I am not gay myself, I hope this will be normal like that in the future.

I did not find the character very interesting because I don't like whining people much in general (call me cold if you like), but he said that was only during the hours off duty and he proved his words right during every single operation, so I came to respect him, I can say that much.

You couldn't be more wrong OP. Given that you mentioned being able to avoid him completely, that proves that even if you didnt like him, it didnt bring down ME3's story at all.

I thought Steve was a great guy. I found him very likable. He doesnt even do unwanted advances on Shepard. In fact, its pretty fun to do the 'jealous' bit in the nightclub when he's checking out other guys and you're straight.

Though I think my favorite running bit is how James doesnt seem to realize Steve's orientation. I don't think he figures it out until Citadel if you're romancing Steve. You can see the light going off in his eyes in that scene.

I'm pretty sure James knows that he's gay since there was a conversation between them in which James replied to Cortez that he knows Cortez was enjoying the view when Cortez teased James for always working out. In Citadel, I think he realized that he was the third wheels.

"You know you love the show, Esteban"

I don't think Vega is at all unaware.

Nah thats the kind of joke a straight guy does with someone he thinks is straight. He wouldnt do it with Steve if he thought he'd take it seriously. Remember he also does multiple bits with Steve about finding the ladies hot.

In fact he did that in the same bit where he realized at the end he was the third wheel during Citadel.Image IPB

Of course Vega knows, Steve isn't secretive about what happened to his husband. It's like I mentioned above: People just don't talk about Cortez' sexual orientation because there is no need to, everyone is relaxed about it. I like that.

Those two seem like best of friends, Cortez's death affect James the most (Aside from STEEEVE). It seems a bit strange if he doesn't know Cortez's orientation.

Nah, it's called "giving your buddy some ****". Cortez gives it right back to Vega with his line about liking "bears" (Vega doesn't get it, of course). They've known each other for years, Vega probably knew Steve's husband back then.

Agreed that, beyond his grief from his dead husband, Steve's a little bland.

I would've preferred Bioware combined James and Steve's character, thus opening a spot on the squad roster for another ME2 exclusive squadmate like Grunt.

I don't like it when people you don't know very well yet start using your shoulder to cry on.
That's the only thing that bothered me about Steve. They should have waited with his husband drama until he and Shepard got to know eachother a bit better.

I like him. I always play femshep though so dunno if that changes anything. He seems to be one of the characters that generally care for shep and voices it a lot. He's calm and centered which may come off as boring for some people.

I don't like the Steve romance, but I thought he was fine as a friend. A bit of a downer, but he's alright. Far from the worst character.

Gosh, it seems like every character has about 30% of the BSN dislike them for some reason. Considering the incredible overall approval for the characters as a whole, that really dulls the complaints quite a bit.

well Allers was the sorriest excuse for a character but....

with Cortez I thought he took away from Jokers role. Dont get me wrong I love actually knowing who the shuttle pilot was but it seemed like every mission had him in it in some way. Joker only had barely a handful of scenes where he was doing something cool (Grissom Academy beginning comes to mind).

Definitely he isn't a 'gay character' he's just a character who happens to be gay. If you do the m/m romance with Kaidan in ME1 it feels the same way and then in ME2 when he hugs him on Horizon and then ME3.

Sexuality is done well in ME.

I can't remember what video it was, but Meer said there were several of those lines recorded. STEEEEVE was only meant to be the romance version but they used it anyway. VS reactions are funnier though.
