I wanted the Protheans to be what Liara thought they'd be like

Intelligent, enlightened, a force of good for the galaxy. I wanted our Prothean squad mate to be more like the Vigil AI. Boy was I disappointed with Javik and his arrogant, bloodthirsty character. And it's not as if he's the way he is because of the Reaper slaughter of his people. By all accounts the Protheans were jerks anyway and them getting wiped out isn't the tragedy we were led to believe it was. I can't reconcile a warmongering race of idiots with the intelligent beings that helped Shepard's quest long after their death, with the beacons, the Conduit etc. That's just me though. Maybe I've watched too much Star Trek in my time.

How did you feel about the true Protheans, or at least, as represented by Javik?

Javik was the best new character. Hands down.

They were pretty much the Qunari of Mass Effect. They were still awesome though.

I'm sure you talk down to Liara, too, if you awake millions of years into the future and find out that it's being controlled by fishes and cockroaches. You have to treat the creatures you see as food and inferior beings as equal. It's not very easy to adapt. I love Javik. He's a hilarious character.

I thought BioWare handled Javik the best way possible.

I am glad Liara was wrong.

I'm pretty sure you're the only one.

The switcheroo in Prothean lore was phenomenally done, brought a lot of perspective to Liara as a character, and provided for a crucial Renegade counterpoint to the myriad of Paragon squadmates ME3's already inundated with. I wouldn't change Javik at all.

I loved Javik. Not only did I agree with him at certain points (not always) but he was pretty funny without meaning to be.

Interesting how the most Renegade squadmate is also the biggest failure, isn't it?

I think Javik is the ultimate **** of the Protheans. I believe the average Prothean is much more friendly.

Even then, I have no problem with them being imperialistic (I don't like it, but it doesn't ruin it for me). Not everyone can be a Zeratul, some Javiks are needed. (though Zeratul is infinitely better than Javik).

What are you suggesting, that Shepard should strive to do things the opposite from Javik?

I loved it! Liara looked a fool and I got a badass squadmate who isn't afraid to speak his mind.

He was like Zaeed, except alien. Also with less stories.

. Well imagine his stories.  They'd all end with, "and then the planet was burned to a crisp". It's be like asking Master Chief to talk about his war stories.

I'm just interested in what makes people think he's a badass or has the right idea. He didn't succeed at all.

Now, I completely understand that Shepard probably would not have succeeded either in Javik's situation. But would have it ever gotten to the point where Shepard is willing to forget about his or her friends - to stop caring- out of anguish or shame? 1984 made an interesting point of showing that to be the ultimate betrayal.

Awesome powers, check.
Makes Liara looks like an incompetent/naive asari, check.
He's with the badass group (Wrex, and Zaeed), check.

Javik did not "stop careing", did you see how Pissed off he was when Victory was shutting off the other life pods?

Not for every Prothean in existence. But for his old crew, yeah. Wasn't that the entire purpose of the shard? To make him forget? To make him stop caring?

Didn't succeed? Only if you choose the Refuse ending. Javik's purpose was to make it to the next cycle to lead its civilizations in defeating the Reapers. While he doesn't end up doing it in the way the Protheans had intended, he does help Shepard end the Reaper threat.

I liked Javik and what we learned about the Protheans through him. I always felt that the idea of some enlightened pan-galactic civilization that united everyone in peace and harmony was a little naive and ridiculous.

I can't speak for Javik himself as I haven't played From Ashes yet, but the appearance retcon is kind of annoying.

umm, the Shard was actually the Complete Opposite. The Shard stored the Memories, hopes, and dreams of Every Prothean that possessed it. The fact Javik keeps it proves he did not stop careing, the simple fact he still has it shows he honors his Comrads. if he "stopped careing" he would have thrown it away
