It doesn't help that the supposed flaws are usually pretty stupid. For example, people saying that a character becoming angry when anger is perfectly justified is a flaw. I hear the word 'stubborn' come up a lot.

I'd probably pick the Asari for the most part, like if it was Asari vs Drell, Vorcha, Yahg, Krogan etc.
But if it was Asari vs Humanity, it would be bye-bye Asari, good luck in the abyss! Can't betray my own race...

I mean, a race of bisexual alien women with a fetish for straying outside their species? Sure, they're boring, but it's not like Bioware didn't give us something to like.

I mean they started out rather too good - if you look at their depiction in ME1 they are kind of good at everything, as well as being about the "nicest" race out there too. And also hot blue alien space babes.
Bioware clearly recognised it, so they started "deconstructing" them. Problem is, in the end that left them as a distinctly negative stereotype of femininity - a bunch of strippers who can't defend themselves and talk to much, whose achievements are all down to the gifts of the Protheans, without any actual virtues the game cares to acknowledge beyond being hot.

You can put a positive spin on that message too though, with the idea being that no society can ever develop properly without input from both males and females. I think the asari parallel the krogan fairly well, they're both so busy touting their own virtues they fail to notice the rest of the galaxy laughing at them. Unfortunately for the asari, there's no genophage cure that's going to fix their problems.

But that isn't a positive message at all. The asari don't have men; biologically speaking, they have no need for them or their perspective to prosper. That is, in fact, an incredibly negative message, as well as a distinctly anthopocentric one. In any case, they don't talk too much at all; their diplomatic and cultural achievements are second to none, and it's made the galaxy work out really rather well; proportionally speaking, the galaxy as a whole seems to be somewhat better than modern Earth, and this is largely due to asari accomplishments.BNN999 wrote...

Asari vs. Geth? Asari
Asari vs. Quarians? Quarians (I am a Talimancer after all)
Asari vs. Turians? Turians
Asari vs. Krogan? Krogan
Asari vs. Salarians? Asari
Asari vs. Vorcha? Asari
Asari vs. Batarians? Hmm... Asari
Asari vs. Terminus fleets? Terminus
Asari vs. two or more species? Forget the Asari.
In my mind, the Asari aren't worth more than any two races.

They were written to be a fantasy, not a species, created by straight men to be better women than women. I am insulted by their very existence.
Thank you for putting my exact thoughts so succinctly.
I would happily let them die in the place of any of the other races.

Making the Asari not perfect was good writing, and they did it well. It made them more interesting.
You could make a very serious argument over whether or not the Asari are the greatest race/culture in the lore and this thread alone is proof of it

I wonder if any of the people here gleefully announcing how eagerly they would commit complete genocide are the same people who complain that the ending 'forces' them to the same thing on the basis that genocide is wrong.
Probably, but can you blame them? It's an entirely different situation.

Seriously though, you need to pay more attention to the game. Sure, some young Asari are strippers, or dancer, but not all of them. There are Asari who chose to be mercenaries, or scientists, schoolar, artist, or office workers, bartender... etc. And in ME 2, during Samara loyal quest, an Asari dancer even yelled at a Turian that she's just a dancer, not a hooker. They are not different than Human. Look at our young generations, there are tons of young girls join the stripper club, or pornographic business. It doesnt mean all of our young girls do that. Just a small part of a group. And you think that they enter their mommy time right after "stripper" state is gross? Look at human, do you know what MILF mean? yeah, there are human moms, even grannies still making porn clip. Which race is the gross one now?
This
Yes, we see some asari dancers (in places where you'd expect them, like Choras's Den or Aria's club). But 95% of the asari in the series are quite modestly dressed. Apart from the strippers, Benezia and Samara, most of them don't even show cleavage. Liara is also one of the few female characters to wear real armor.
Could their culture be more fleshed out? Sure! But the same can be said about all the other alien races. Asari, Krogan and Quarians are probably even the most fleshed out races in the series.

I would say that you're projecting quite a bit, here. The Salarians are considering uplifting the Yahg (and the first Shadow Broker did uplift a Yahg) because they are physically formidable, ditto for the Krogans. The Asari naturally lived up to a thousand years before the Protheans came along; it's not unrealistic to see that, and their ability to commune directly mind-to-mind, as desirable traits alone.Aris Ravenstar wrote...
And it still doesn't explain why the Protheans decided to uplift them in the first place, the implication being because they're perfect beautiful fantasy babes and even in their primitive stages the Protheans wanted to tap that.
The Maiden-Matron-Matriarch thing is just an abstraction from the way humans age, and I wouldn't place any particular emphasis on it. Maidens are also seen engaged in archaeological excavation and working as mercenaries. Matriarchs are also seen tending bar or working as spies.
The whole Asari exotic dancer deal is pretty sordid, and I can see being offended by it easily enough. Not to mention the mammaries, which as apparent non-mammals they should have no need of. All very prurient alien design attitudes.

Er, asari are mammals. Rather obviously, really.
