I should probably say that I play MP on Xbox. I suspect that the problem would be worse on PS3 since I've played a number of other MP games on PS3 and the oversight/policing has been much worse than on Xbox (mainly because you have to pay subscription for the latter).
On principle, I hate mics (mainly due to bad experiences). I know that the original idea to communicate with team-mates in order to coordinate matches seems like a good thing; but all in all, it often doesn't turn out that way. In private matches, it's great. If not...it's terrible.
I don't know if it's normal to get abuse. I also know that I'm a very sensitive person.
About a week ago, I partook in a gold match where someone was slagging off this other person who was, for all intents and purposes, quite a noob in terms of their N7 ranking, challenge points and loadout (I know you can't judge on solely one of those things alone). I don't mind playing with new people - hey, we all go through the learning process, right?
Basically the bully was calling them all sorts of names (focusing on gay and whatever else you can imagine). At the time, I was impressed that the person being bullied stayed on. I actually felt like leaving since I was offended by all of the things being said, even though they weren't directed at me (thank God; I can only speculate at how that other poor person was feeling).
The match in question was on the hazard version of FB Reactor and the bully took every chance to tell off the noob for venting the reactor at the wrong time, getting all the team-mates killed (even though I didn't think he/she did). The bully was telling us other two guys not to rev the noob when he/she went down because he/she was a gay person and dumb, and whatnot. We still revived them though and helped them along - he/she honestly wasn't the worst player I've seen on gold.
I don't have a mic. I used one on PS3 and gave it to one of my friends (he was a CoD slave, what can I say?). But, if I'd had a mic, I would've told this guy to shut up and that I would report him.
After the match, I sent the victim a message apologising for what he/she went through and that they should totally report the bully. But then they sent me a message back saying 'pardon?'. This person in question turned out to be Canadian - perhaps French canadian. In any case, I felt more than a little bit stupid when I tried to do a good thing.
Despite that setback, I still firmly believe that bullying should be stamped out. Saying that people are gay and stinky and not reviving them/helping them for those reasons is unacceptable.
Sorry about this long post - just had to get this out there. MP should be enjoyable for everyone - no matter what their gender, class, orientation, colour, religion, whatever.
