I'll use a mic every so often saying space magic one or twice whenever I get a biotic explosion. Not all the time though.

Not a big talker, strangely enough I've been in very few games where there's been a lot of dialogue. I usually take my cue from the rest of the group; if they're talking, I'll say something where I fit in, otherwise I just shut up and play. If I know you maybe I'll say more.

Never experiences trash talk on PS3. I use a mic, but I play mostly with the same group of people.

I'm pretty sure on PC I play with volus because all I hear is their breathing.

A simple solution to ****s. Mute.
I have a sinking feeling it'd be a bigger problem on PC than the consoles if it weren't for a lack of standardised VoIP systems, and the network problems that that creates with actualy chatting. You know, because no mute and no user rating system.

The only abuse I suffer is having to listen to strangers breathe through their mouths, eat cheetos and listen to ****ty music.

Are guns good? -> this kind of discussion, but easier.

Microphone is a tool and public voice channel is a game feature. It HELPs, like text chat, to communicate with other players. The information you get could improve your gameplay by having additional information on enemies, receiving tips about how to play, plus you can become friends with someone, because you have liked his personality.

Those are the pros. But there are also cons: you can be offended, someone may disturb e.g. by playing loud sound or telling things you don't really care. Also, you can by accident transmit something private, because you didn't care to check voice setting or forgot about it.

We have many years of voice communication in online games. As most things in our world, it has evolved. Smart Developers found how to eliminate or decrease problems AND how to allow such social feature as voice communication. Here are some inventions:
- mute option for selected player,
- kick option for annoying players (by "votekick" or administrator/moderator),
- flood filter - blocks if someone exceeds limits of transmission,
- information on who is talking by icon over his nickname/character, or listed in GUI or players list (available after hitting button).

Disallowing voice chat - just like text chat - when it is possible to implement is just a CHEAP way of "solving" problems by avoiding problems.

The idea behind mics was good. The way people use them, usually not so much.
I have a really thick southern accent. Not quite Deliverance-level, but in that general ballpark.
So when I start talking into a mic in any game, not just ME3 but on PC too, I tend to get two responses.
"Is your accent legit?"
Or
"Oh my god dude go *radio edit* your sister and shut up!"

The first type isn't usually too bad. The second type usually ends with me trying to ignore them and talk to the reasonable people on the team/server, and getting drowned out by people who think it's funny to yell nonsense with fake accents into their mic every time I try to speak.
I very rarely take my mic off mute in ME3 because those second types and their RL equivalents have made me seriously self-conscious about it. Doesn't matter what you have to say, if you have my accent and you're playing with people from the US, a lot of people are gonna instantly label you stupid and ignore anything you have to say except to make jokes about squealing boys and purdy mouths like it's the most original jokes ever.

I have to actively supress my accent because of the Southern stereotypes both IRL and in game.

There is an option to mute players.

I usually try to be pretty nice to people but if they're being a dick I have ways of getting even.

Aww that sucks :( I love a lot of Southern US Accents!

I hate that people automatically assume people with Southern accents are bigoted, stupid or rednecky. Some of the best people I've ever met IRL have fabulous Southern accents!  Another reason why I hate the accent prejudice is that it's expressive of the regional differences in the USA and we shouldn't wish all of that way IMO.

I think a lot of the Southern accent prejudice tends to be sexist as well - sexist against the men, specifically. I have a Southern accent... granted, it's not terribly heavy as I hail from northeast Florida, which tends to not be quite as Southern as some of our fellow states. However, there is definitely an accent on me, but as a woman people write it off as cute or "Southern Belle". Men with a Southern accent get the typical redneck/Deliverance stereotype, which is incredibly stupid and sad.

I like our Southern accents. It's home. Image IPB

I'm on PC. Probably 75-80% of players have a mic.

Maybe 30% actually say something during a game.

I have a mic and rarely chime in, so I'm as guilty as the rest. At least I'll warn people of an approaching phantom and stuff like that.

Dragon baby, as a woman, I find that a Southern accent on certain men sounds incredibly sexy

I barely have an accent since I'm not a native Texan and only when I'm drunk or super tired- but some of the men around here (including my husband) PHEW...*fans self* :D

I play ps3, and in all honesty, I consider mics a good thing. not only does it help to train newcomers, but it helps build a relationship of sorts with people. I've come across several people that, from a personality standpoint I could totally chill with irl.
sure, there will always be the occasional (*female hygiene product) but just remember the flip side of how much hilarity is to be had when someone kills that annoying banshee with a scream of "take THAT (*female dog) lol :)

I typically won't go into a pug with mic on but if someone asks I will turn it on no biggee.. I haven't had many bad experiences though only one time it was directed at me. One recently where the guy was calling out another player because he was close to him when he died, something about hating pugs and how the guy was on his nutz, but it didn't make sense and this is one of the only times I wanted to get on the mic and tell him he was the pug and to stfu. Other than that the weirdest mic experience was a long time ago when this guy started to talk the whole match about my little pony and explain he was a brony... he went into a lot of detail. Now there may be a time and place for brony talk, but its not ME3 multiplayer when I'm trying to kill reapers.. it made my penis soft and we washed out on wave 10 objectives..

This is one reason as to which I do not use a mic.  I'm autistic and have an odd voice as well (aside from being monotone), which certain people I used to acquaint with made fun of me about.

I'm on PC and I'll use speakers or surround headphones, but for some reason when I use the headphones, depending on which jack I plug into, I either hear full sound or everything minus mic voices.  If I play Gold or Platinum I'll want to hear mics just in case someone needs to say something important, but otherwise, I'll put it in the other jack.
