95% of the players I've run into on PC are either quiet or pleasant. Then again, I'm an adult, so I can't really be bullied to begin with.

You should meet the Xbox community.

So I've heard. Always felt a bit sorry for the good X-Box'ers having to put up with all that.

I've had ~3 people insult or intentionally be dicks to me in a couple thousand pugs (of which a couple hundred featured someone talking).

And then I've been the dick to some unfortunate people who caught me at a bad time. Some of them deserved it, but I still regret it. Probably 5 times I've been overly agressive on the mic.

So that ratio does not favor me. If, by chance, someone I was a dick towards reads this:

Sorry person, you probably deserved it though. I mean that with all my heart.

I prefer Mics, I'll turn mine off if I'm the only person with one

I only had headphones, and no mic until about 8 months ago, or so.

Honestly, on PC I don't hear much chatter at all, unless I'm with my friends, and then, we don't really say a whole bunch.

Usually, with PUGS, I'll say an occasional "thank you", or "I'm clear." for getting revived, or capping an objective, and rarely get a response.

Hi. First of all, sorry if this post is really long and comes across as a rant! But I do think that it's important. Image IPB

I should probably say that I play MP on Xbox. I suspect that the problem would be worse on PS3 since I've played a number of other MP games on PS3 and the oversight/policing has been much worse than on Xbox (mainly because you have to pay subscription for the latter).

On principle, I hate mics (mainly due to bad experiences). I know that the original idea to communicate with team-mates in order to coordinate matches seems like a good thing; but all in all, it often doesn't turn out that way. In private matches, it's great. If not...it's terrible.

I don't know if it's normal to get abuse. I also know that I'm a very sensitive person.

About a week ago, I partook in a gold match where someone was slagging off this other person who was, for all intents and purposes, quite a noob in terms of their N7 ranking, challenge points and loadout (I know you can't judge on solely one of those things alone). I don't mind playing with new people - hey, we all go through the learning process, right?

Basically the bully was calling them all sorts of names (focusing on gay and whatever else you can imagine). At the time, I was impressed that the person being bullied stayed on. I actually felt like leaving since I was offended by all of the things being said, even though they weren't directed at me (thank God; I can only speculate at how that other poor person was feeling).

The match in question was on the hazard version of FB Reactor and the bully took every chance to tell off the noob for venting the reactor at the wrong time, getting all the team-mates killed (even though I didn't think he/she did). The bully was telling us other two guys not to rev the noob when he/she went down because he/she was a gay person and dumb, and whatnot. We still revived them though and helped them along - he/she honestly wasn't the worst player I've seen on gold.

I don't have a mic. I used one on PS3 and gave it to one of my friends (he was a CoD slave, what can I say?). But, if I'd had a mic, I would've told this guy to shut up and that I would report him.

After the match, I sent the victim a message apologising for what he/she went through and that they should totally report the bully. But then they sent me a message back saying 'pardon?'. This person in question turned out to be Canadian - perhaps French canadian. In any case, I felt more than a little bit stupid when I tried to do a good thing.

Despite that setback, I still firmly believe that bullying should be stamped out. Saying that people are gay and stinky and not reviving them/helping them for those reasons is unacceptable.

Sorry about this long post - just had to get this out there. MP should be enjoyable for everyone - no matter what their gender, class, orientation, colour, religion, whatever.

one of my friends got in an altercation during a TDM on GoW the other day becuase he "left" the other player to go kill stuff and the other player died and starting trahsing him for it. also said "other player" was drunk and wind up tryog to sh** talk my firend. who decided toi troll him for the lolz saying things liek w/e you don't have a wife you life in your paretns basement etc etc (i wish i was there to hear it live) anyway dude wakes up his wife and puts her on the mic to prove he has one lols :o

Sweet Jesus, tell me about it. That's why usually I have it off or in a party chat with my friends. Though there are those few instances where I have to go into game chat to get those randoms off their butts to help with the objective.

I sometimes turn mine off because I moved my PS3 and a leather recliner I got a few years back for fathers day into my son's 'room' . we purchased new furniture for the family room and I was told I can no longer 'Dictator the large TV downstairs anymore'

. I use quote around 'room' because the C-blocker *cough*son*cough* sleeps with us most of the time (he's 3).. and since the TV and PS 3 are in 'his room'-he uses it for Netflix-he likes to play with his toys when I'm in there.. so he'll sometimes be smashing cars and/or blocks and trucks while I'm on .. sometimes people dont like the background noise..

so I either turn my mic down to 1-2 or cut it off when he's in there.. if I'm with friends I leave it on as they dont mind

I haven't had any issues on the PS3. Sometimes you get someone who figures they're the Commander and start issuing orders to everyone that are stupid, but it's rare.

I usually get told that my characters and weapons are crap (its true, my stuff is mostly crap) by people who have better stuff. Just because I'm not as well off as other players, doesn't mean they can hold themselves above me.

I use my mic a lot so that I can give orders to people. And I only do it to keep them alive.

lol the thing is if you feelings are easily hurt, you shouldn't be playing MP games where people can use mics, you also should not be going out in public either.....Until you learn how to deal with words you do not like without crumbling mentally..... just sayin you have a hard life ahead of you if someone saying a bad word hurts your feelings

This is the unfortunate thing about the Internet; anonymity. People get to hide behind their console/PC, which makes it easier to say and do things they probably would not do face-to-face.

The other unfortunate thing is that you're on console, which is generally more accessible than a gaming PC and as they usually come with a microphone (xbox definitely, not sure about PS3 as I've never owned one) it means you're more likely to come across this sort of person.

My reaction varies between games, at the most extreme I'll quit the game, sometimes I'll even start up a party with the other people playing and ignore the person being rude, or start up a new lobby and invite the two other people. My usual process is to quit the lobby once it's finished, file a bad review of the person so it lessens my chance of being match-made with them again and at the least submit a positive review of the other person, sometimes I'll friend request them, too.

Despite all this I'd say mics are still A Good Thing™; for the few games where I've had a rude/abusive player (I've fortunately never been the victim) on my 360 I've had numerous good games and met quite a good bunch of people.

I'm a uk PS3 player and I can say that I hear the most abuse from US players unfortunately.

For some reason it tends to be abuse based on sexuality with a lot of mention of a word starting with F which translates as a meaty meal enjoyed with gravy and peas in my country :D (look it up)

I don't care about being called gay, as It's not an insult to me. I'm not gay, but I'm also not touchy about by sexuality.
It annoys me mainly as it's just boring, and lacking in originality.

I like to use a mic with the right players, but when it's some idiot just cursing, or humming to himself I usually hit mute (I'm lucky my headseat has a mute feature for chat).

Mic is a mixed blessing.

I'm very approving of mikes in general, but that d*** you were playing with should go and fel**** a dead donkey while getting plugged in the a** with a screwdriver. But, PC pugs are generally silent. I always try to have a mic on when I play gold, because letting the team know that the human adept is getting grabbed is generally a good idea, considering I did the most dps. Sometimes I do just dumb ish and leave my bathroom fan on while I play. Otherwise I like saying that I'm getting grabbed and going "OH S***" through my mic to give my teammates a heads up. Mice are always helpful even if your pugs are silent, so long as it's game related or the normal good job/thx.

I don't care what the objective is, I never go into the reactor because I know someone can hit the switch.

Mics are horrible in this game. Every person I find in a PuG using one is always near the bottom of the score list because they're too focused on their conversation. The PS3 is the worst, as it's free to play and you're not allowed to mute anyone.

That brings me to the next point. The person that was being harassed might not have
heard a word that was said, because on the 360, you can just go to privacy settings and mute every single person you run into, or mute everyone not on your friend list. Judging from their reaction, that was probably the case, they never heard a word that was said.

Also, if you need to use a mic, you're just bad, period. You're unable to adapt to situations and need to be in communication with your teammates to know what's going on. Any true gamer should be able to react to a change instantly and know what to do in any given situation. The only time I've ever felt the need to talk is to tell someone I'm letting them die just so the round can finish and we all win, as opposed to us all dying.
