so I keep downloading mods and they keep downloading as .rar files. how do I open said files? sorry for the stupid question I really don't know what I am doing.

You simply need to do a google search for an unrar app. There are plenty but the best is pobably 7zip. 7zip will handle just about any compression system you are likely to run into.
