Actually when you think about it, no.

Seriously, it is not practical

Here's why :-  . I know it is not a game but the message there is clear

-The main character has lots of responsibilities, usually really big responsibilities such as saving the world from armageddon. They need to focus. Having relationship is detrimental to that. As Batman puts it :- "Dating within the team always leads to disaster". Dragon Age games are so far not solo games like Elder Scrolls where followers are optional, there is always a team.

-Having relationship means you can be exploited. Again, as Batman told Wonder Woman :- "...and if my enemies knew I had someone special they wouldn't stop from getting to me through her." This applies to both sexes

-You cannot truly do what you want as a character in the game. Sometimes I want to be mean and slit the throat of someone who was picking fights with me. Sometimes I want to steal their stuff because I can. Just imagine if your character was in a romantic relationship with a very good NPC. He/she will interfere with that.

Bottom line, relationhip and romances in game, like real life don't make sense if you are being practical because you have a lot of other things to get done.

Does that mean romances should be dead ? No, it should be there for people who want that. However, I would really like it if they let us as the main character have more flings or like in the previous Dragon Age games, have the option to release stress sexually by going to a brothel.

Actually, I think the whole "exploiting romances" would make for an interesting character arc. Didn't Bioware have something like that in mind originally for Kai Leng? I recall there being something about Cerberus phantoms stealthing aboard the Normandy and possibly killing Shepard's LI.

Different strokes to different folks. Romance and practical matters were always at odds with each other both in RL and in literature, movies, game, etc... so just because it doesn't make a lot of sense practically doesn't mean it ain't gonna happen.

If people were logical and rational we wouldn't even need videogames or entertainment, our time would be much better spent studying, researching, working, perfecting a craft, etc..

So ya, whatever floats your boat to release tension in game is fine by me, just please add the stuff I like or I will look for other games that have it.

Well there are a lot of other things "at odds with the mission" a lot more wrong than a romance - they're called side quests. The romance can at least be imagined to happen during the nights in camp going from one critical mission to the other while going to find lost caravans or delivering letters to widows isn't mission critical stuff.

How is that any more "practical" than a relationship? Blue balls aren''t going to kill you. If your hero is really, competely and totally "focussing on the task at hand" then he wouldn't be wasting time and money on unnecessary sexual gratification.

I'm confused. Are you saying:

- That romance and relationships don't make sense in real life (in which case, what???), and so don't in-game either.

- Or that the game shouldn't try to imitate real life and its impractical things, in which case, I'd say an RPG should be as organic as possible, and the possibility of romance and relationships can help doing so.

Life is not "practical".  And even if you roleplay a paragon of pragmatism and practicality, the fact that you can choose not to pursue possible romances or relationships adds to that aspect of RPging. A choice you wouldn't have at all if romance and relationships weren't there to begin with.

Romances adds to the roleplaying experience, so yeah it's worth it. Just don't do the same dumb stuff by giving rivalry points to the player if they say no cause they're not gay. Zevran was at least understanding when you rejected his advances.

Holy cow! As a busy professional I've been doing it all wrong. I'm going to email the doctors and lawyers out there and let them know that they're doing it all wrong, and that they'll never be succesful if they keep focusing on inane things like their personal happiness!

IKR ?

But hey, The Sin never said to ditch romances, he just wanted a faster, less "strings attached" way to relieve stress. If it makes his game better, why not ?

Thanks for getting my point ! :o I never said to do away with romances, I just wish to have more "no strings attached" stuff because it makes more sense to me. I mean, I am trying to save the wold in this game & I might die in the process so I don't want to burden someone else emotionally with my death.

Similarly, I don't want to be pick between doing what I must and between someone I have feelings for. Morrigan & Alistair  will have this great banter if Alistair is in a relationship with the Grey Warden where Morrigan poses this question to Alistair : "and what if the Grey Warden was forced to choose between the Warden he loved and ending the Blight ? What should his choice be ?"

However, trying to save the world is not a easy thing & most of the time it is very stressful and hard work. Having some form of companionship does mitigate this somewhat but its not wise to become too attached. So the solution is the middle way which is flings or "no strings attached".

Doctors & lawyers don't have to save the world from the blight or armageddon or a worldwide mage-templar war. You automatically forfeit your personal happiness once you undertake such quests / tasks.

I am saying if you have a really big task that adds a huge responsiblity on your shoulder, a task that might get you killed or a task that requires you to make hard choices, romantic relationships is not a practical thing to have.

That is how I view it. I am not saying we should do away with romances entirely but I would like to have a middle ground in form of flings or "no strings attached".

Maybe he should take his own advice and focus on the matter in hand? :innocent:

I tend to look at the romances as something that develops between people because they are in an intense situation, not something that distracts them from it. I don't see how a few conversations and a few seconds (if the black-out is to be believed) of passion somehow makes your hero incapable of fighting the big bad.

That said, I would love to see more NPC flings that let you be cavalier about the physical side of things. Personally, though, I don't tailor my PC to what an LI wants to hear unless I'm role-playing someone who would be swayed by that person's opinion because of their feelings. That's led to more than one failed romance attempt but that's part of the game.

Digital romances. They may be fun at first, but after the sex scene you realize you've just been manipulated and feel as shallow as a puddle.

Now, now... there is no need to jerk anyone around here. We need to all keep a grip on things.

Hey guys just wanted to make a quick post about romances are they really worth it in the Dragon Age franchise. The reason i ask is because we don"t know if  the romances are returning or if they will only be mentioned ( I think I spelled that right). So what is your take do you not mind if the romances return or do you want to see the love of your Warden and Hawkes life again. Thanks for taking the time to read.

I love being able to interact with the characters in my party. While romances are not required for interaction, myself and others have found some of them to be enjoyable experiences. That's all the 'worth it' I really need in a cRPG.

I'll let a friend of mine who's currently doing his ER residency know he can relax because it's not like lives depend on what he does day in or day out, often with little sleep and ridiculous shifts.

It's precisely because these are jobs that drive you into the ground if you let them that personal relationships are important.

Not to mention that I'm pretty sure that the single-minded person who "forfeits happiness" isn't going to keep it toghether psychologically long enough to actually save the world.

Precisely.

People who detach themselves from the world and the people in it don't actually have a stake in its continued existence.

Often, those types of positions that require soul-crushing work to enter serve to weed out those who do not have the strength, resolve and fortitude that come with the responsibility and pressure of the position in the first place.

Lawyers have working 100 hour weeks doing paralegal work fresh out of law school to eventually work on a case with the hope to make partner. Doctors have internships and residencies which put them to the grindstone. Firemen have exhaustive physical and procedural testing. The quality of all the men and women who survive said process makes the world better as a result, not DESPITE the sacrifices made, but BECAUSE of them.

A hero who has to risk their life on a minute-by-minute basis and still be expected to make the right decisions to save the lives of others may need to be able to demonstrate restraint and grit when faced with the greater good. Otherwise, their personal desires and feelings could cripple them.
