I've read about this and really didn't understand the issue, people using the 'host' excuse as a crutch for game play.
What I understand is if the host player has a crappy connection MY powers may not fire off correctly? I get lag etc.
so some classes like Vanguards need to 'host' because their powers dont fire when I want them to?
What classes aren't effected by host? If at all, I personally dont see much of a difference from hosting to playing on anothers hosted, except with a few classes -Vanguards and Shadow
I'm here to argue that you just need to adapt, everyone likes to epeen it up but are quick to use the 'but I wasn't host so I didnt play well' excuse. I'm not a GREAT player but thats a hogwash. Usually if I'm switching classes or my first run I need a 'warmup/feel' run.. I usually die earlier than later due to the 'host' issue I'm assuming..
the funny thing is though, even when I'm hosting I need to go through a feeler stage too; sometimes its just the lag between your input and the game reaction.
-Note-I'm moslty a Silver player.. only comforable with N7 Shadow and Fury on gold and EZmode Jugg.
I was playing the Slayer last night(very fun class probably my favorite of the Vanguards) , for some reason BC wasn't going off when I wanted it to, like VERY late; I died like 2-3 times the first few waves and was generally pissed. I got a 'feel' of the times from my charge button to it firing and was able to to quite well, -I personally like to complete missions and dont 'got for top score' but I think I was top or 2nd the few runs we did-didn't die for the rest of the match.
I frankly dont see a huge difference either way
ok I now understand the 'host' issue-I think

Infiltrators, vanguards, and grenade classes generally have it the worst when lag comes into play.

I had a host today.. his connection was so terrible.. I was killed by Cannibal melee and that cannibal was at least 10 meters away from me.
Also the damn host and his buddy tried to kick legitimate looking Volus Engineer... The Engineer left because he felt offended probably.. but I wish they tried to kick me instead.
That Volus Engineer was lucky not to start that game with his precious equipments.

Some hosts probably know that they have really bad connection but still try to take advantage of being host because they cannot play as non-host as well. It`s a very bad idea.

It depends on how bad the lag is. I hardly notice the difference if I;m playing with someone with a good connection who is also in N. America. If they are on the other side of the world and/or have a bad internet connection, then lag can be atrocious.

OP, it's as rlucht explained ... it's generally not whether there is lag or not, but the degree.
As MastaReefa alluded to, Vanguards not charging (or regen shields), whiffing on grenades, but also stuff like shield boost doing nothing, but charging you the cool down or things that use "grenades" (stim packs, repair matrix, nightshade blades), debiting your "grenade" supply, without doing anything.
This isn't a "learn to play" issue, it is a game design that lacks a "graceful degradation" from a "perfect" internet connection.
BioWare can't control the internet, but they can control game design, to make it less susceptible to real world internet conditions. Issues like frame rate and lag in general exacerbate bad game mechanics, like sticking to the "furniture" or the omni-button, turn the game into something that is not much fun to play. Which is the point, for a lot of folks -- if a video game is not fun to play, then it fails as a game.
Lag also contributes, I believe, to the partial sync problems (can't crouch behind cover, no countdown clock, shuttle in LZ, invisible enemies, invisible teammates, invisible objectives, invisible pizza, sound effect dropouts, avatar position glitches, etc., etc.) that plague the game. Again, game mechanics appear to be very vulnerable to this issue and it creates all sorts of problems on any map, but especially Condor and Rio.
tl;dr: Second order consequences of lag turn the game into a clusterfark, which is mission fail for the game and not something folks should simply "adapt" to, in order to have fun.
