I made Wynne a arcane warrior but I was thinking that giving her armor would lower her ability to cast spells so I just left her in robes again.  I also don't want to give her more armor than the boys in case that draws agro.

So what's the deal?  I always use to armor up my mages but now I'm not sure it's the right thing to do.

Edit:  I mean since Fatigue goes up with your armor.Posted Image

Oh yes. Armor has a noticeable effect on an Arcane Warrior's mana pool. (Or was that just because I dump vast amounts of mana into sustains that have the same effect?)

At any rate, my answer is that I just armor my mages and get used to going through lyrium potions like boozehounds go through vodka. (And yet somehow, my Arcane Warriors still seem like they're made out of glass.)

Since you don't want Wynne to draw aggro, I'll assume she's not tanking; then there's not really much reason to equip her in anything other than robes and increase her fatigue.

As a sidenote, if you are rolling in nightmare, then you don't have to bother about armor type having any effect on threat. It's only for difficulties below nightmare.

I usually run on Hard. Nightmare is too hard and scary, ha.

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep her in robes and see what happens!

Don't know what you mean about threat and Nightmare difficulty.

In context, I think "threat" is a synonym for "aggro."

No what I meant was do you mean Does everyone has high armor on Nightmare? Why don't you need to manage threat on Nightmare?

I was thinking of doing 3 warriors and Wynne on Nightmare in a couple of playthroughs from now.

Then after that 2 warriors and 2 mages.Posted Image

^You'd obviously need to manage threat, but you don't need to worry about armor types having any effect on it. Even in lower difficulties, the difference between light and medium/heavy/massive is a paltry 5 initial threat, which is practically insignificant.

Armor actually gimps a mage unless it's a sword-wielding, frontline melee-type-with-lots-of-sustaineds Arcane Warrior built specifically to complement a warrior/rogue party. Robes potentially offer significantly better protection than most other gear and is comparable to the very best armor (of any type) in the game when combined with spells like Rock Armor and Arcane Shield.
Caster-type Arcane Warriors in particular should avoid heavy armor entirely, seeing as Shimmering Shield on top of everything else mentioned previously is all but overkill when it comes to stacking defensive gear/buffs. If your mage is still dying by this point, then your problem has more to do with other factors like DPS or bad party composition.

Bottomline is that there should only be two reasons why your mage is using heavy armor: either because you expect him/her to be grabbed/overwhelmed/hit by really powerful melee attacks often (as is the case for most frontliners) or because not a single warrior in your party has the Taunt skill and you plan to keep it that way (roleplaying/challenge reasons, perhaps).

Or because my elven mage looks especially badass in Legion of the Dead armour. Which she does. :wizard:
