So, can anyone say with certainty if outfitting your army improves them at all in the battle?

I think we have established that there is plenty of experience to be gained by donating things to your troops, but do they actually become any stronger? I would really like to know, and I can't find a definitive answer.

Yes, they certainly do, based on my experience from the last two playthroughs. The first game, I gave the army of Redcliffe lots of gold and they survived two areas in Denerim. On my second playthrough, I did not give them anything and they were almost completely wiped out after the first area in Denerim. Considering I was playing as a Mage (theoretically reducing their workload) in the second playthrough, and was careful not to AoE them at all, I can say with some certainty that their weakness the second time around was due to the lack of support on my end. The other armies, I cannot say with certainty because I didn't use them in the same areas, so their varied performance may just be due to the level design differences.

It does. On my first playthrough i gave the mages only novice runes and some journeyman runes. On my second playthrough i gave the mages all grandmaster runes i could buy. The mages wiped out the complete stage "elve's alienage", it was a firework.

Did you? Are you on console? Because on the pc you can't donate GM runes - only up to M runes.

Shouldn't use mages anyway in the final battle. They just do so much friendly damage, they are just as likely to kill your party first. Damn there goes my "I'm Kind of a Big Deal" achievement.

Yes, 360 XBOX, as you say it now im not sure if i could only donate Expert Runes. But i gave the mages the strongest runes i could buy and this made a big difference.

It makes no tangible difference.

Until I see figures, I'm going to chalk testimonies up to the placebo effect.

Yeah, I can't get a sure answer either.
