As many of you know my video card died some weeks ago http://social.biowar.../index/16233303

Thankfully, BSN is a great community with amazing people ( as well as trolls of course ) and dunvi sent me her old video card a GTX 260 core 216.

I got dunvi's card recently
Image IPB

Now the issue...

The card is big, is a dual slot one and my motherboard is from stone age, the problem is that my mobo is a micro atx and there is a thing that blocks the card from fit perfectly.

This is the mobo I have:

Image IPB

The thing bellow the PCI-E, yes, that silver thing that seems to be a kind of cooler ( I don't know the name of that in english ) so I haven't been able to make it fit.

My question is BSN, is there a way I can make this big video card fit in my mobo?, I really want to play this game again and I bet that with this card ( i had a 9400GT ) I will be able to play amazingly good, so, please help me.

Also,  buy a new mobo is not an option.

You can replace the heatsink with a smaller one and should be okay. Not the easiest thing in the world to find though.

Looks like the heat sync on the board at the end of the PCI-E is blocking i.
Do the plastic covers at the end of the video card where the fan is come off easily? That might be your best and only bet.

By removing the heatsink from the board and you could end up with a dead board.

EDIT: Or yes a smaller heatsink if you can get one could work too.

RJ, it will fit but not advisable, GTX260 is a power hungry card, your board is lack of heatsinks and is probably the capacitors are older than Javik. And I don't think your CPU can handle that GPU...

TBH, you can get a better pc at $250 budget...

Damn. That's what I was worried about, that and the DVI thing. Ah well, no regrets YOLO, we'll find some way around. I'll do some googling when I'm not on my phone.

You'd be surprised what you can get away with with a cheap desk fan and care full monitoring...

Can you remove the plastic shroud from the video card? It is probably held in place by some plastic tabs.-usually- the shroud is just decoration, but in some cases might help to direct airflow, so this might not be a great long term solution (heat).

If that doesn't work a more drastic solution would be to remove some off the fins from that heatsink over the southbridge chipset. Southbridge (the other silver heatsink is covering the northbridge) generally doesn't get very hot, so it's -probably- ok to remove a row or two of fins.

I'd think that a smaller heat sink would be your best bet short of buying an entirely new board.

As noted, completely removing it runs the risk of just giving you a dead board. All that heat wouldn't have anywhere to go.

I also imagine removing the fan casing from the video card then popping it in could fry the video card being that close to a heat sink(I had this happen to me a few years ago).

Yeah I open my side-panel too and let my air cooler blow it away. Lols.

But my point is, what about the life of mobo capacitors? I don't think it will be enough for the GTX260

...considering the PSU too

I just remembered that Daniel the undying Dell actually used ice packs when his fan's bearings gave out (I replaced the fan). I'm not allowed to poke at Lazy's laptop anymore, am I...

What about if I cut part of the heatsink on the mobo?, i mean, reduce their height :P

Try PCI-E Risers! I never tried it before.. but it'll buy you some time. They're fairly cheap!

True, also i should add that my screen resolution is 1024*768, so the card won't get very stressed :P

Just read the other thread.Pentium D 805..wow...

I'm pretty sure you can remove a few of those fins, like 1or2 rows, without cooking anything. Definitely don't remove it completely though, and definitely try to remove the plastic shroud from the card first.

I'm more worried about trying to power that card if you still are using the original psu. You might fry the whole thing...

It's ok. I'll make fun of you for awhile, then I'll have to do the same thing for my lappy, and the cycle will continue.

Obviously RedJohn, just mod your Coalesced files to run the game without graphic card. If that doesn't work, just use a fragment of Reaper Code.

You are a PC player, make use of your shameless haxxor abilities.

On a more serious note, I agree with what people said, from the look of things, you ought to change your mobo because there is no way this PRIMITIVE piece of pre-rachni war krogan hardware will support dunvi's card.

I'm a thermal engineer and have designed many boards during my career. That heat sink is designed for natural convection (without airflow). If you shorten the height of the pin fins, but add a dedicated air flow source (fan) you will more than compensate. Trim off as little as possible, since the length does impact cooling efficiency. Try to avoid prying it off as it is likely held on by thermal tape and you will damage it during removal and render it useless.

Also check the power supply ratings for each voltage rail and make sure there is enough power to supply the card before you start the mods. If all else fails you could consider submersion cooling where you sink the whole setup into a mineral oil bath. The mineral oil can hold a lot of heat and is non-conductive.

Good luck.

BSN to the rescue! I was gonna suggest looking into the PCI-E risers thing as mentioned but I'm not the most knowledgeable here.
