You know- the elven alienage orphanage thingy... I'm just curious if this was intended as humor- or if anyone knows. It's just such a ridiculous and otherwise poorly-developed, poorly-written quest.

I mean, you get the quest from... Otto... a blind Templar that looks and sounds in voice like a funny-eyed bald Knight-Commander Greagoir... And everything he says sounds like a corny line from a b-rated horror movie, culminating in his keen detection powers of... the sense of wrongness... lol "The sense of wrongness is strongest just beyond this door..." And down the hall. And they even mark the room map with it- "Sense of Wrongness." It has to be either a joke or they let someone with little talent write a side-quest for the alienage. (Of course they'd put it in the alienage.) I prefer to consider it a joke since talent did go into the voice-acting, cinematics, area art, etc.

So you get the quest to go around the alienage looking for signs of wrongness... and with your wrongness senses peeled you notice... a dead dog in the alley and some blood. Well, those tell-tale signs of wrongness are enough to clinch it for Otto. Off he runs without assistance  in his blindness to the orphanage door. Nevermind the wacked-out woman nearby who speaks of evil men inside that say nothing and everything... or the oddity that no one noticed that the orphanage had become infested with demons... except that a dead dog was in the alley, so... In you go with your blind divining rod of wrongness detection who joins in battles. And after some tedious ghost battling, kooky ambience horror limericks, and gore galore, the blind templar demands that the wrongness "show itself." Come out where I can see you! And he's promptly stabbed with, yes, a pitchfork. Like in devil pictures. Except it's a demon and no demons in the game have pitchforks. The final battle can get rough if the tank has low fire resistance, but still. Then the door at the very back of the building leads out the front door.

Nice treasure though... whatever that was about.

The quest is called "Something Wicked."

The humor in the DA series doesn't usually have good-hearted people speared through the chest as a punchline, so no, I don't think it was intended as humor.

I think the dialogue between Otto and the demon is kind of humorous.

Maybe I just have twisted sense of humour.

You can of course gather all the clues, but two reported is enough for Otto (all shown as dialog options). We must bear in mind that Otto senses wrongess and templar PC can agree, he/she feels it too. After that it is about finding the most likely place.

I always thought that the quest had been put there to hint/tell tale of the horrors of Howe's purging of the Alienage.

The pitchfork is odd touch though.

My guess on the pitchfork is that they wanted to dramatically impale Otto. You're in the Alienage, in an orphanage, where they're not supposed to have weapons, which pretty much rules out spare swords or mage staffs lying around.

Granted, there's not much use for a pitchfork, either, unless the orphanage also tends a stable or something. But it's a common, recognizable implement - moreso than a billhook, say. "A pointy bit of broken wood" possibly resulted in playtesters wondering what the heck it was - random junk isn't always easy to ID, especially when pixelated and doing something strange, like levitating.

I don't think they were trying to be "ha-ha" funny. If, on the other hand, it weirded you out, I think that was the plan.

Yes, I knew the actual quest name. I was emphasizing the quest terminology because, well, it's silly. It sounds like a joke on the player or perhaps a self-jest from the writers, making fun of our constantly seeking out evil to fight. It feels very metagamey with the cliche lines and such that tend to clash with DAO's generally more multidimensional approach. Granted- there's evil, we gotta kill the evil- but the presentation is so simplistic and hokey that it draws my attention to the writer, wondering what they're up to.

I mean, there are simple side-quests like clicking doors to warn accused blood mages, but it integrates with everything else in DAO- blood magic, Chantry doing witch hunts, etc. This one with its odd Templar that senses not magic but... "wrongness..." I mean, he's not a paladin. There is no "Detect Evil" in the Gray Area Warden DAO. The pitchfork (wielded by a creature that in DAO just slashes with claws and breathes fire) is just the icing on the flagrant incongruity cake. And the goofy lines... Anyway, I suppose it's just my impression then. I just wondered if I were oblivious to some inside scoop on that quest- like, "Oh, yeah, everyone knows that was Writer Such-and-So messing around..."

It's not a matter of "wierding" as much as absurding. Maybe you're right- maybe they were trying to go for an ominous nuttiness that would throw the player off and possibly create immersion, having swung too far toward that end and just made a horror diversion that could've been a segment from "Evil Dead" with a cameo by Bruce Campbell.

This is one of my favorite quests, actually. Otto's blindness is what gives him this "sixth sense"  so to speak, and not uncommon in real life with people who are either blind or deaf. As a character, Otto is ranks pretty high on my list. The quest itself is interesting because you see the effects of something that happened right after the uprising.

Sure, it's a little corny not up there with FEAR levels of sheer terror, but it's an interesting side quest.

There's no 'Detect Evil,' but mages comment on the state of the Veil all the time.  The 'wrongness' in the orphanage seems to be a combination of a very thin Veil and a demonic presence.  Since Otto isn't a mage, but rather a non-mage with an artificially augmented Fade connection (or however the heck they've decided that lyrium works with templars this go 'round), I don't think it's totally off for him to not call it by its technical name.  He may not know "thin Veil," he just knows "this ain't right."

You can fight animated suits of armor at Redcliffe; I assume that's the work of the desire demon.  Animate Dead is explicitly a telekinetic spell - the mage puppets the skeleton and does *not* summon a demon into it.  The Alienage rage demon is smart enough to talk, unlike most of its kind - having it use a bit of telekinetic spirit magic for (melo)dramatic effect doesn't seem terribly unreasonable to me.
