I'm running through the entire series again, but playing a dual-wielding inquisitor and planning to take along some canonical characters, but I would like some advice on which mage to take with me (starting on BGTutu).
The party will cionsist of:
Redwulf - Human - Inquisitor
Imoen - Human - Thief
Jaheira - Half-Elven - Fighter/Druid
Khalid - Half Elven - Fighter
So I have my thief covered with Imoen, and also have plenty of fighters in the group, and I'm planning on letting Khalid put points into Long Bow to stay as ranged support fighter. Jaheira and I will be the front line fighters.
I may then recruit either Viconia or Branwen into the team for clerical powers, depending on how I want to role-play it out.
Then my main decision will be what mage to take with me. I really don't want to take the Minsc/Dynaheir combo, and I find that having a multi-classed Khalid a poor substitute for a true mage.
My thoughts were on recruiting Edwin, but I wasn't sure whether I could do that without telling him that I don't want to hurt Dynahier. I plan to rescue her first before letting her and Minsc go, and then try to recruit another mage.
Will Edwin join if I have already saved Dynaheir?
Does he have any other requirements that my LG paladin will find hard to comply with?
To keep my reputation low enough for the likes of Edwin and Viconia, I plan to have Vicky go off to make sacrifices to Shar every now and then (bonk a solitary peasant over the head with her hammer in the name of her goddess).
Other than that, I'm happy with the role-playing aspect of an Inquisitor recruiting such villainous scum as Vicky and Ed. I can justify it all in my own mind, so I don't feel that there is any problem with them working towards the common good and aiding the people of the Sword Coast.
I also don't want to get into the trite morality good/evil argument as I feel it is irrelevant in this case.
Your help in this will be much appreciated.
Viable choice of NPC mage

If Dynaheir doesn't join the group and you want to keep Edwin, I believe you have to kill her. I think you best bets would to be to recruit Xan or dual Imoen to mage and recruit Safana to do thief tasks.

Why not complete the Nashkel Mines and then recruit Dynaheir? If you don't return to Nashkel, there shouldn't be a problem. By that time, she should have fireball already memorised. No need to go looking for a scroll!
The other solution is the happy patch, but reading between the lines, I suspect that you wouldn't want it.

Thanks for the replies.
I was thinking of completing the Nashkel mines and then helping Minsc resuce Dynaheir. Then I let them both go, with the intent of meeting later at some point (not to recruit, just to stick to the story so that they are kidnapped along with charname at the start of BG2).
After that I recruit Branwen and Edwin to complete my party.
The main question at this point is would Edwin still be around to recruit if the Dynahier quest line has already been resolved?
Would he still join me?
Will he ask me to kill Dynaheir still, even though she has gone elsewhere?

If you've already dropped Dynaheir before speaking with Edwin he will be gone for good. However, if you keep her in the party long enough to talk to him then Edwin will join as well. You can then drop either (or both) of them and they will stay there to be recruited in future if you want (subject to reputation being suitable).

Coolio!
I'll try that tonight.
I really wanted a decent mage in the group, and Dynaheir bugged me, especially as I have some of the G3 mods installed that give her a romance option series of dialogues.
The woman just won't take no for an answer!
Edwin sounds like he will be a humorous alternative, although I will have to resort the the sacrifice of peasants by Vicky im happy.

Hm. I know you can remove and add Viccy to keep your rep at 18, but how does it work with a second evil party member?
That is, removing Viccy bumps your rep up 2, in this case to 20. I assume Edwin immediately heads your way to complain and leave forever. You then ask Viccy to join again, dropping your rep down to 18. Does Edwin still initiate a conversation, or stop in his tracks? If he talks, what does he say?
I'm afraid I've only ever played one evil group, and only in BG2, never in BG1. Valen helped keep their reputation firmly in the gutter by randomly assaulting unnamed villagers.

The NPC reaction to reputation is not an instant thing. You can safely dump Viconia and immediately add her back without Edwin reacting to the momentary 20 reputation.

Thanks everyone.
I created my character and played through the game for a few hours last night, but haven't got close to picking up either Dynaheir or Ediwn yet.
I'll report back once I know the score.
For the record though, I rolled a 97 stat total on the 6th reroll for my Inquisitor!
I took a couple of pics on my phone so if I can figure out how to attach them here I will do.
(I know Paladins have high stat totals but 97 is just awesome!)

I have rolled that only twice in years. You were lucky!
You can get higher with cleric/rangers though.

I would suggest Dynaheir, Xan and perhaps (dualing at higher levels, or just via modding) Imoen. May as well dual Khalid as well, to be honest.
