I have played ME3 and ME2, and now I am on ME1 (yeah I played them backwards; sort of feels like Prequels). I never realized how cool this Kaiden Alenko could be. Sure I heard his name dozens of times in ME2 and ME3, but to actually see him action, and get to know his character, only to realize he dies.... it just sort of made me rethink the differences of Ashley and Kaiden... I think I like Kaiden's personality a hell of a lot more than Ashley's.
Anyway, I always assumed Ashley and Kaiden was simply there for a 'love interest' for our characters. Since I prefer Kaiden's character over Ashley's, how would it affect my male Shepard had I saved Kaiden instead?
In other words, would my Shepard be considered gay? I am NOT gay, and as such I do NOT want a gay character.
But no, I do not discriminate. Nothing's wrong with gay people, and I certainly have learned to accept them as human beings. We all have choices, and we should make those choices as an individual. It's just that I am straight and I want my Shepard to be straight.

If its not sexual it is not gay. Two men can love each other and be intimate with each other without sexual intention/desire. Or just really good friends. People try to simplify opinions to poles but it they open their mind they will see a circle. Then a sphere. Then free association between any points.

Kaidens a good character an comes into his own in ME3, your shepard can still be good friends with him and have him alive in all games, he will approach you in me3 but much like everyone else when it comes to romance you can say no with no hard feelings so to speak, dont think a male shepard can romance him in me1 so talk away

Well it boiled down to Ash. My Shepard has to have some kind of romance, and Ash is the only character who can perservere all the way to ME3 and still be a Romance option.
But believe me, if Miranda was an option as Romance in ME3 and 3 as well, she'd be my interest.

No, Ashley and Kaiden are not your default 'romance' options. In fact, neither are available as gay romance options in ME1. A male Shep can save Kaiden and still be 'just buds' with him.
If you want a love interest to carry you through all three games then there's always Liara.
I think you're missing a lot by doing these games backwards. Miranda is a romance option in ME3 - but only if you import a save file where you romanced her in ME2. Same goes for Jack and Tali (and Garrus, Thane and Jacob for femsheps). Maybe you need to have romanced Liara in ME1 to have her as a love interest in 3 too - not sure there. There are also sidequests and characters that only show up in later games if you made certain choices in previous ones.

Liara is available through all 3 games an even more so if you buy lair of the shadow broker, you can romance her in me3 if you never in the other 2 but well for me anyhow it just seems off an really isnt as good if you started romancing her in me1

I always save Ashley in my playthroughs...so I don't really know anything about Kaiden in ME3.
However, I don't think the game will force the gay Shepard/Kaiden romance on you just because you saved him in ME1.

I liked Kaidan as he was written in ME, too. It's what they did with him in ME2 and 3 and conversely the improvements made to Garrus, that made my FemShep join Team Turian.
I don't imagine 'gay' is a word used in the ME 'verse. People just go with whatever suits their fancy.
That said, there was a male/male mechanic built into ME for Kaidan, but left unutilized. Some folks have unearthed the ManShep voice files corresponding to a Kaidan romance that are still present in the game and modded their installation to make use of them.
But you can't accidentally make Alenko your love interest by befriending and saving him. You can romance Williams up to that point, then leave her babysitting the nuke and fly off with Alenko. It's not like accidentally getting Liara's interest just by talking to her. Zero chance of this happening in a game not modded specifically to add the option back in.
Same thing with ME2. You can't accidentally find yourself hugging Alenko on Horizon. He still calls you a traitorous Cerberus flunkie in a friendship.
For ME3, there is an equality of offerings as far as full-trilogy romance goes. Whomever the Virmire survivor is, there will be an opportunity to romance them in ME3, regardless of if you ever did in ME. With the Virmire survivor, if you don't wish to flirt/romance them, you don't have to. Just don't be (completely) unfriendly which will make your options very limited when confronting Udina on the rooftop later on.
At some point after facing down the Virmire survivor on the rooftop, and the confrontation at the docking bay, you will have a lunch/outing invitation from them. If you have not locked in a love interest for ME3 by this time, Kaidan will more than hint at it. At which time, you can just decline.
