I thought some people might interested to know that my roommate, Ross
Tierney, head of Direct 3.0 has just told me that the head of NASA has
given the order to switch from the Ares rocket to the Direct 3.0
program. If you follow the space program at any rate you might know how
HUGE this is, largely due to the horrendous failure that was projected
for the Ares program.

There may be mention in the upcoming State of the Union address. If you are interested in it at any rate, you find more info at http://directlauncher.com/

We're sending astronauts to Jupiter? Or did I read that wrong? (i'm on dial up so I can't watch the vids)

I thought Jupiter was a gas giant IE no land to land on.

They would really have to hate the person they send, if they did.

Probably just another probe.

Yeah I thought the pressure was supposed to be really intense.

Probe makes more sence. Guess they want to start mining Hidrogen 3 (or was it Helium 3?)

The Jupiter is the term for the launcher itself; not the destination.

I am assuming you are referring to this - "Ares-V Cargo Launch Vehicle (CaLV) with one single "Jupiter" launcher, capable of performing both roles."

About time they upgraded from the Ares. Ares was never the most reliable of projects, so maybe a change of launcher module will help get the space program back on track.

Helium 3. I don't keep track of Fusion but I'd imagine the moon is easier if you want to mine Helium 3.  I don't know if the gravity well is stronger or weaker (you do have to land, but Jupiter is HUGE) but assuming you're sending people to do it the saving in weight for supplies for the journey is considerable.

As for going to Jupiter, while the planet itself is difficult to land on the big four moons are very interesting .
