Hi

I'm new to ME and I've been romancing Kaidan, though I would've chosen Garrus if he'd been an option. I'm about to go to Virmire and I don't want Kaidan to die, but I also don't want to continue our relationship in ME2. So, my question is, if I transfer my character from ME to ME2, can I choose not to transfer our relationship or will I be able to break up with him? Not just cheat on him, but actually break up so I could start a relationship with Garrus. If not, then can I still terminate my relationship with Kaidan before going to Virmire or after it? I would like to continue the relationship in ME, but not in ME2.

All I will say is that if you want to romance Kaidain in ME1, go for it.  In ME2 you will be free to explore other options if you want...

i dont think your locked into a relationship with anyone in me1 until ilos, if im wrong someone will correct me im sure, an then in the sort of cutscene you get before landing on ilos i think you can sort of refuse there advances, again not sure though as well if i dont romance anyone its sorted before im halfway through the game

You can lock in earlier.  Specifically during the confrontation scene if you are romancing Ash/Kaidan and Liara at the same time.

I think you can refuse them when you are by your locker during Citadel lock down as well.
