 Okay, so I know you can optionally not recruit Issy and Fenris, and Anders, Merrill, Varric and Aveline are automaticlly recruited, for a time at least.

However, at the end of Merrills recruitment quest, you have the option to say you won't be visiting her. If you never do, and don't ever use her in the party etc. the first time she'd automaticlly show up again would be right at the end of Act 3, when the Chantry gets blown up.

Does she still turn up there (which would be a bit of a funny scene if she and Hawke start talking like they've been adventuring all throughout the game XD) or at some point does she stop appearing in the party selection screen etc?

Fail!Hawke eagerly awaits your replies... and her team of only Varric by the time she ends up messing up Kirkwall by the end of the game XD

Pretty sure she'd show up.

Generally the game seems to be determined to make sure you'll have at least 4 characters available to you, including 1 of each class.

I did that once and when she showed up at the end it was a bit awkward.

Now I have to do this just for the sheer riddiculousness of her suddenly popping up after six years XD

Actually, I might try doing this with never visiting any characters ourside of compulsory-storyline quests to see what happens on one Hawke. I know I can skip Izzy and Fenris....  I could just never visit Anders or Merill again and just wander around with Varric and Aveline for six years XD

You can take this to the extreme in ME2 if you have a lazy, disinterested Shepard deciding the fate of the galaxy. Just recruit the bare mininum team members to advance the plot, skip loyalty missions, and don't bother with any upgades to the Normandy. I've not done this but someone has and it is as glorious as it is hilarious.
