Even spectre x guys have had trouble when things became any more complicated than just stand here while I rocket. As soon as moving and coordination were involved the run went to hell.

Bad speedruns don't take a lot of skill. Doing it right is a different story.

yes, you must know which direction to face so that the enemy only spawns in one place. You must also know how to press up to use a rocket. very difficult for some.

its cool in theory because you can go on platinum and not waste any level 4 consumables

Speed running is a meta-game. Its not about "skill at playing", speed running is a puzzle about lowering time. Speed running is about taking every bit of in-depth game knowledge, and exploiting it to go as fast as possible.

Some tactics used to speed run take a lot of skill, some take careful timing, some take knowledge, and some are extremely easy. But its all subservient to decreasing time.

Check out http://speeddemosarchive.com/ lots of great speed run on that site! I used to have a Metroid Prime speed run which was a "world record". But... only for a few months before it was defeated.

Clearly you need some skill.  You need to know the maps and spawn points, and you need to be good enough to clean stuff up quickly after the Rockets are out.  You do not have to be an elite player though.  I'm pretty sure I could speedrun just fine, and I am just a passable Gold player.

You're assuming the easiest speedrunning map is also the easiest soloing map?? or maybe you are just trying to be difficult. A fair comparison would be trying to solo Vancouver, Giant, or Ghost.

No, speedrunning isn't as hard as soloing. We know that was the point of this thread. The 'difficulty' in speedrunning is all self-imposed because you are simply allowing yourself to make less mistakes. Your margin for error is a lot less when you are trying to beat a time over and over again and that is where the difficulty lies, not messing up.. at all.

To achieve the best of times possible you have to be pretty good with a variety of skills, I like to think. But, If a player's goal is to 'speedrun' and get 10-12 minute times, they will find it incredibly easy after learning the strategy and playing with 3 other knowing players.
