Replaying trilogy and it seems nostalgia has caught some on BSN.

Characters were and have been the strongest point of the franchise. Expecially in the first you had real impact on them, Garrus and Ashley could be influenced by Shepard to levels i've not seen before. There's no pink glasses there.
I've hated the inventory in ME, never understood the point of hundreds and hundreds of useless armors all looking the same and having slightly different colors and stats. Quality beats quantity for me, i love how different weapons are really different in 2 and 3, but i can understand people having a different view.
I do miss exploration, but i don't miss having to trudge with the Mako on dozens of planets for a few mineral deposit and the odd prefab shooting gallery. Less planets with more stuff to do? I'd love it.
little OT, Alpha Protocol is brilliant. Full of problems and little bugs, but brilliant

Geth armatures. And the missile towers.
No tank would ever fire such a uselessly slow projectile. Same with the missiles. I'm willing to fudge that sort of thing if it means fun gameplay, but fighting those things was no fun at all.

Alot of BSN'rs seem to really dislike the general reduction in size of the ME2 mission compared to ME1 (I for one felt that the hub worlds could have been larger). But I still think that the ME2 missions had a much better sci-fi atmosphere, while alot of the large but empty worlds in ME1 could easily be serving a bland fantasy game. The tighter spaces actually seemed like lived in locations and had sufficiently more detail to them.
In terms of just size though, I think the ME 2 dlc drastically improved the original game. I personally feel that the missions in LotSB, the kasumi dlc and Overlord are among the best in the series. They generally have excellent pacing and a much more realised sense of scale than pretty much any mission in the series bar the suicide mission, and for me they add to the myriad of reasons why ME2 is still the best game in the franchise.

Was he supposed to be glib? He's a disillusioned merc from a dying species. The addition of HOPE for Krogans from ME1 to ME3 perks him up. Makes sense actually.
I kinda agree, kinda don't.
See, I don't think it makes sense. He goes from uber serious, killer merc to wise cracking sidekick. You can tell different writers got a hold of him. Not saying it is bad, but his personality makes an unrealistic change through the three games.
At least Garrus was more consistent. He was a little bland but just starting to go down his "Archangel" mindset.
Don't forget ME2 Wrex led Clan Urdnot *IE enjoying the spoils of success* ME3 Wrex is getting some serious Krogan tail after the cure. He's a baby-making machine. I know that sort of 'responsibility' usually puts me in a better mood. When do you think was the last time ME1 Wrex got any action?
Um...ok, yeah, you have a point. Wrex DOES seem much more relaxed in ME3. LOL.

Um... the series has always been part-RPG, part-third person shooter, even if the weighting of the two alters quite dynamically as the trilogy goes on. People have different tastes, so from their point of view, whichever aspect of the game they enjoy the most is going to be more important to them.
(Never understood the hate of RPGers for shooterfans, and vice versa. What's wrong with liking both?)
Come on now, mine was a post made to highlight the folly of using third person shooting as the only measure of each game!
To that point, I only used combat as one of my bullet points in the OP.

The fact that people can claim ME1 had a good plot with a straight face makes me sad. Sure, it had a few good plot twists and plot developments, but the overall plot was terrible. It's miles better than 2's and 3's plots, but that's like saying camel dung is better than cow dung and horse dung because it doesn't smell as bad.
But it is good enough to have you posting on the forum for the series a year after 3's release?

On that note, on my most recent playthrough of ME1 I was thinking about how the Mako fired a shell that impacted the target almost instantaneously but the Get Armatures were firing uber-slow snowballs. Snowballs that did a LOT of damage if they hit but uber-slow and easy to evade.

That cover issue exists in the next two games as well. Yep terrible compared to grenades that seem to go where they want and give the enemy plenty of time to avoid before they explode.PSUHammer wrote...
And...do I need to mention the grenades? They were terrible in ME1.
How terrible was it to be able to swap explosion types on the fly, rather than the far better being stuck to one type of grenade.
Sorry but you aren't going to convince me that the grenades in ME2 and ME3 are an improvement.
I am glad you enjoy it. I don't. Having played the hell out of ME3 MP the last year and going back to ME1 this past week, I can say without a doubt, the responsiveness of the controls, the side roll and cover system (with separate mapped keys), banking powers, improved tech powers, biotic explosions, better pacing, more weapon variety, better kill shot animation, better visual indicators of power effects, grenades that act like...grenades, drones, rockets, tactical cloak, etc. All better.
As for grenades...incendiary, standard, proximity mines (which are pretty much the ME1 grenades), Arc grenades...all improvements.
If you enjoy ME1 combat more than ME3...I would gather you are in the minority. Not that there is anything wrong with that....hell, I like ME3's ending. LOL!

Most of the things that would be needed to elevate ME1 above the other two are largely cosmetic (more variety on planets, more character interaction - felt much closer to the squad in 2 and 3) but those things matter. It's a good game that possibly fails a little due to being too ambitious but it was the type of ambition that I appreciate.
I prefered the ME1 realism of having all squadmates wear armor. There were no half-naked squadmates, no streetclothes. You're on the ship, you are in appropriate clothes but when you go into battle YOU WEAR BODY ARMOR. Even journalists wear body armor and helmets in combat zones. Sheesh.
ME2 and 3 should have followed that simple logic. Normal clothes on ship or off duty but ARMOR IN COMBAT.

I found combat in ME1 to be clunky and unresponsive. Regarding the single button cover of ME3...just remap that button in the coalesced.bin file if you are on PC = problem solved. I liked the ability to crouch but the cover system didn't do it for me. Many times, as a sniper, I found myself getting stuck or accidentally moving out of cover when I wanted to line up a shot.

Gameplay mechanics were lightyears better in ME3 than ME1. The one thing I'd love to see is the controls of ME3 transferred to ME1. THAT would be a mod worth having.
ME2 was an improvment of sorts over ME1 in that department but I lost count of the number of times I'd get killed because I go stuck to cover at the worst possible moment in ME2...or wouldn't go into cover at the right time regardless of how hard or many times I was pounding my space bar in desperation. ME3 was MUCH better in that regard.

Yeah, I think I said a few pages back that if you could drop ME3 shooting and controls and inventory system into ME1, it would be almost the perfect game. LOL.
And, if you are on PC, you can remap the spacebar to separate cover and use to different keys. Makes MP WAY better.

Have you seen troops in combat? They all wear virtually the same pallet-swapped armor. That is what uniforms are. Uniform. Body armor isn't a fashion statement, it is life or death safety equipment.
While I hated the bright and flashy colors of armor in ME1 (Bright WHITE armor? Are you serious? There's no snow ANYWHERE to be seen!) I liked the fact that everyone was wearing it. Logical, reasonable, right.
Half-naked or street clothes in combat...silly and wrong.

I agree, I also wish that ME3 allowed you to choose the casual clothes for the other characters, not just Shepard's casual clothes.
That way they could have kept the armor on everyone for combat instead of mixing in the street clothes or half naked clothes. For instance Ash's blue outfit could have been chosen for a casual outfit during non combat scenes.

The entire plot of ME1 kicks off when Saren attacks a colony he didn't need to access a Prothean beacon he already had, to find the location of a Conduit he didn't require.
Or maybe he didn't get the intact beacon until after the attack on Eden Prime, maybe?
And therefore didn't realize he didn't need the Conduit until his Spectre stayus had been revoked. At whichpoint, yeah he needs teh Conduit.
The assumption here is that Saren wasn't piecing together information as well. Saren is not TIM, who had clearly already read the script and knew exactly what was on the other side of the Omega IV relay...
Even if we assume for a moment that the Virmire beacon was not acquired until post-Eden Prime, Saren still reveals his treachery and gets his Spectre status revoked by attacking a human colony to find the location of a Conduit he didn't need. He already had full access to the Presidium, as did his Asari commandos.
Because of that, I've always been of the opinion that Saren probably wasn't a Spectre in early drafts of the script. Saren needing the Conduit makes sense if he isn't Spectre, so I suspect that the decision to make him a Spectre like Shepard was a late one.

I guess its more of a case of having more over-sexualized female characters rather than just armor/'normal' clothes. While I can't say that I dislike having sexier characters in ME2-3 I would defo agree that the female crew members costume design was a pretty ridiculous in parts.
While I actually preferred that some characters hadmore sci-fi-ish or outlandish costumes as opposed to boring military outfits, some of them were just needlessly oversexualised. Reminds me of Benezia in ME1 whose original design was pretty cool honestcake.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/benezia003.jpg before they overdid it in the game itself. I think they should leave all the nekkidness for romance portions only where it wouldn't be out of place instead of having officers and commandos walking around half nekkid Lol.

On Eden Prime she is running around in white and pink Phoenix armor, for no other reason than to make her look more feminine by having her wear feminine colors. It is entirely untactical, and out of uniform to boot.
Generally speaking I think the armor system in Mass Effect 3 is better than Mass Effect 1. The only areas where I'd give ME1 an edge are in every set of armor having an optional helmet. Javik and Liara should have had helmets with their armor in ME3. That, and Ashley's default armor should have been less catsuit and more military. Her default outfit aboard the Normandy should have just been the camo utilities that most of the crew of the Normandy is wearing.
