Replaying trilogy and it seems nostalgia has caught some on BSN.

As soon as it ended, imported and started ME2 which I haven't played since release. WOW, forgot how awesome an opening that was. It was especially fun after just finishing ME1. I should have done this a while ago!
I must say the writing has improved since ME1. Some of the conversations with crew on the Normandy were a bit stilted. The romance stuff seemed forced and hurried. SOO much more conversation in ME3. Strange going back.

However, there is simply no substitute for story consistency and atmosphere in such a story driven game and ME1 had the best of both.

This an important point.
I think people forget just how much the writing improved after ME1. That was one of my first reactions when I started playing ME2. I said to myself "They've obviously hired new artists and writers"

Not a big fan of combat in the Hammerhead, but for overland travel, it's great.

The presentation might have improved, but the story itself went drastically downhill.

Unfortunately for Mass effect it didn't improve in storytelling, atmosphere and exploration.
It actually got worse has each game passed.

What a stupid thread, of course every sequel improves in some way.

What a "stupid" observation. Thanks for sharing some more "stupid" insight to this already "stupid" thread. Yay Internet!

Story telling and immersion however, is harder to judge.
ME2 had some parts that were arguably, arguable.
But are more or less overlooked and ignored because of its rather kickass ending that was the "Suicide Mission".
ME3 for the most part was good, with again a good number of WTFs along the way that would have been ignored / overlooked had we had a coherent and varied ending.
We didn't, and ME3 will forever be tarred by those last 10 or so minutes.

The ending of 3 didn't bother me enough to tar the game for me. I am good with the EC ending. This series is about the setting and characters. I think both improved along the way. I am already having more fun PLAYING ME 2, at this point, than ME1

* Wrex had no sense of humor in ME1
I disagree with that. I always thought that there was some slight irony or self-deprecation in the way Wrex would play off the violent stereotype of the krogan, for example:
In the elevator with Tali:
Wrex: "So, Tali, do your people ever talk about creating the geth and getting driven off your own homeworld?"
Tali: "Do your people ever talk about starting a foolish war with the turians and nearly being sterilized?"
Wrex: "All the time."
On Noveria if Shepard uses the "middle" option when confronted by the ERCS guards after landing:
Shepard: "Let's not start a fight."
Wrex: "Why not?"
On Therum when the other squadmate says Joker isn't moving fast enough to rescue them from the cave-in:
"If we die down here, I'll kill him."

Anyway, playing ME2 right off of ME1...will post my thoughts about changes for better and worse. But, a quick observation...hacking minigames SUCK in ME2. Gees, talk about a step back. I just used Gibbed editor to add money and minerals so I can ignore safes and hacking.

I'd never claim that ME3 didn't substantially improve the gameplay. Pretty much all aspects of it are much better than in the original. I just replayed ME1 a few weeks back as well and it does drag out a bit sometimes.

Someone stated in some other thread that ME1 to ME3 all used the same Unreal engine. Did they really or did ME1 use an earlier iteration/version of the Unreal? I wonder because if the engine IS the same (version, etc) I wonder at the possibility of community hackers being able to give ME1 the controls of ME3 (even ME2's would be an improvement).

Story was far superior in ME1 though. Combat has undoubtedly improved since then, and the inventory system wasn't great. I don't like the introduction of thermal clips though.
Ditto on the thermal clips (precisely the same as ammo so why make the distinction?). I'd have preferred they stick with the weapon design idea of ME1 but simply improve upon it.
Thermal clip, ammo mag...same mechanic, same idea. The setup and use of this device requires the same thing I always hate about typical shooters and other games: that there's always ammo just laying around to be picked up and used.
I've done a lot of hiking, I traveled a fair bit. I have NEVER come across conveniently placed piles of ammunition. Never.

Yeah, the Mako sucked.
The mako itself was great. The terrain was terrible though, and the mako combat segments were pretty boring.

They are all based off Unreal Engine 3. ME3 benefitted from more reasources on the team working to pretty it up and make the gameplay better. The only real changes are art direction, controls and effects like bloom. Textures look the same.
