Companions - "Puppet mode" or AI?

Personally, both in the BG series and NWN2, I preferred to have total control of my companions, especially in a game where the tactical approach matters, or at least give you some nice alternatives. Now, of course if the interface is bulky it can become somewhat tiresome, but in NWN2 I used puppet mode no matter what, I just hate to rely on the AI, so I will do the same in DA:O.

For me, it has always been the situation of the battle taking place.Lucas78 wrote...

Boss type battles I always control everyone. SOme weak mobs I just let them go.

Yep, exactly. At first - just to get used to all the stuff.Shensi wrote...
On my first playthrough I'll probably just rely more on the tactics scripting, focus more on my character and get used to the game. Will probably end up taking more direct control of all the companions on other playthroughs (with harder difficulty).

After that I might figure out how to do tactics, or pause/swap my way through battles.

Ideally, I hope for a decent AI. Even though I prefer tactical combats with some planning, I really dislike pausing during combat, which greatly reduces the immersion I find in RPG games.
Hehe, to each its own; beside Pen&Paper (which is a different media, sure), I grew up with turn based CRPGs, from Bard's Tale, to SSI's Gold Box ones and even the earlier ultimas...So I find myself at ease with that kind of approach rather than the real-time one.

This. I only take a hands on approach when a combat is significant enough to warrant it. If my party is facing mooks they can kill blind in melee, I let AI take over.caradoc2000 wrote...
Depends on the difficulty of the game. If you win no matter what you or your party members do, then AI is just fine. The AI tends to be unreliable in other cases.

I agree with that - especially because of the fact that there's a health/mana regen post-battle, so I don't feel too bad letting the AI loose if for whatever reason I'm feeling lazy. But I predict 85% of the time, regardless of difficulty, I'll be toying with the enemy AI and perfecting whatever tactic I feel up to.

I might give the AI a whirl for novelty's sake when I feel I have a good grip on the game, but likely not for long.

Without really knowing how easily the managing of abilities is, I cannot make an assessment if I would be micromanaging all of their actions.

This. If the AI is good, then I'll probably use the tactics slots most of the time.Bio-Boy 3000 wrote...
Will entirely depend on how functional the AI scripting is for Dragon Age. Given that monsters don't entirely scale to your level, leaving my party for basic low level threat fights to AI isn't a problem. <br />

I don't like them ever to act contrary to my wishes, so I'm certainly not going to let them do that in the one arena where I have any say in the matter.Korva wrote...
Puppet Mode! I like my companions to have strong wills and morals and their own ideas ... in conversations and cutscenes.
I will micromanage the whole party, all of the time. I don't even want them to auto-follow outside of combat.
