If the AI isn't stupid, I'll be letting it handle the role of healer while I micromanage my rogues to backstab, my tanks to knockdown/stun, and my own character to BLAST EVERYTHING WITHIN A TEN MILE RADIUS TO ASH!

AI. I'm playing the PCs, not the follower.

I still can't get it clear in my head what control you have over the main character. Is all your movement in RTS style or do you control the PC with the left/right analogue? If it's the latter then how does this switch to RTS style just for combat? Confused! Basically, does the whole game use an RTS control type system and not the more common 3rd person control system like Fallout?

Thanks.

Puppet mode for the most part, although I may set up scripts for common tactics. If the battles are as tactical and difficult as they're claimed to be, I'll be happily pausing and issuing orders every few seconds.

Puppet mode. Definitely. I'm going to enjoy every encounter.

it depends on the battle for me.. I have been playing NWN2 on the full D&D rules difficulty (no penalties, no bonuses) and I find the AI does all right. However in some set piece battles I have found it necessary to use puppet mode to win through.

Personally I like using the AI because the focus of the game is on your character. It feels a little wrong to have full control of the companions, detracting from their individuality...

It wouldn't really detract from the individuality, as it shines through other means than just pure combat. You're the party leader, and think of it as 'your character, giving orders' instead of 'you "mind controlling" them'.

I'll be micromanaging most stuff, though will stick healing and a few other abilities into the combat tactics system just in case I get distracted by my mine character :-). Generally I only allow the AI to attack stuff near by and manually control all active abilities.

Puppet mode. In the battles I'm a general, not a single soldier.

I plan to make full use of the AI, but plan on going to puppetmode during bosses.

Planning on just controlling my char with tactics enabled for my companions.

If the tactics script does its job, as it mostly did in FF12 (since they said the system is similar), then i'll use the AI, since I find it unrealistic that my PC can completely control the rest of the party in the heat of battle.

If it doesn't, or for hard fights, i'll use puppet-mode.

Yeah, I agree: of course everyone has his own "suspension of disbelief" when it comes to various aspects of the game, but during combat I really don't give any "personality" to my companions, it's really just a bunch of combat scripts, while I would rather get through the fights on my own.

Now, of course you could argue that everything in the game is just a big script, hehe, but you know what I mean: especially in Bioware game, the personality of each companion shines during dialogue interactions and the plot itself, while I feel that given the strategic nature of fights, during combat they are just tools you can move around as you wish.

DA:O doesn't use a "spell memorization" system like D&D, right? Because my biggest gripe with AI in NWN2 was spell selection and usage by the AI, and you could find yourself in a situation with one of your party members without spells during a fight because he/she started casting them without a particular reason.

Probably a good mix of both.

If the game plays out like I think it will, just controlling my main character will involve enough to keep me busy and still be challenging.  So I will likely use the "Tactics" system to my advantage..but also throw in some controlling of my own when I want certain effects.

Also depends a lot on how the characters and game plays out..

No, DA:O uses a mana based system. Evidently the bar slowly refills between encounters as well. It should be a lot more convenient to let AI control casters than in NWN2. Assuming the AI doesn't like friendly fire. :pinched:

Gah. Unfortunately. I'm definitely barring AI from letting mages cast spells. Let them fire energy pellets instead.

Same.  Especially with a mana-based system--now I don't even feel like I have to control the casters.  I might take control in hard fights when it becomes necessary, but I find micromanagement tedius in general.  In BG2 it was basically necessary, but with the action queue in NWN not so much.

It sounds like they are putting a lot of thought into the AI, and even letting you customize it with an if/then type system. I'll probably start off letting them do what they want unless it works out poorly. One of the biggest reasons I use puppet mode in D&D games is the spell memorization. Nothing is worse than fighting a boss and realizing your mage just used all his level 9 spells on a room full of rats. I'm glad it's not like that in DAO.

Definitely using the AI until I get used to the combat system. After that depends on how good the customizations on the AI really are.

Definately micromanagin everything the first time, partly because i wanna get a feel for all classes on my first playthough, and partly because im not wasting skill points in the tactics skill.  Anything is better than that

I let the AI manage my companions most of the time, but I switch to puppet mode when the difficulty of the fight requires it.

Puppet mode will never give you that "you took out half the party with a fireball" comedy moment brought to you by the AI... Image IPB

As a game programmer I will be eating up the opportunities to write some custom scripts for the NPCs. As a roleplayer, I imagine the party sitting around a campfire talking about battles they've fought in the past, and planning out how they might react to future events.

In battle, I think I'll always start out worrying about my own character first and foremost, and letting the AI control the NPCs. Of course, if things get hairy, then you can bet I'll be shouting orders at them Image IPB
