More recently, I think something along the lines of the newest XCOM's would be cool as well.

I Min/Max the stat growths for certain builds. At lvl 9 I switched to an advanced vocation from Strider. Assassin offered specialized stat growths, greater weapon versatility, special augments, and cooler skills IMO. The basic vocations share some skills with the advanced vocations but they do have quite a few unique skills and augments of their own. They are absolutely solid vocations. I think the Strider vocation is better than the DA:O Rogue because you can be effective and have fun with both daggers and bows. Orgins encourages you to focus on one or the other. But I'm drawn in by the customization factor of the advanced vocations. Mystic Knight and Magick Archer FTW.Plaintiff wrote...
I've not quite got that far, I got the game recently and am trying to max out Strider before I move on to Assassin.Youth4Ever wrote...
The advanced hybrid vocations are amazing. I hope Bioware is taking a look at them.Plaintiff wrote...
Combat in Dragon's Dogma is pretty sweet. I love clambering on enemies.
Hybridization of classes is neat, but not my top priority. I'll be happy as long as the starting classes remain fairly distinct from each other. My biggest gripe with DA:O was how shortchanged the Rogue was compared to the other classes.

You defeat the enemies by kindness. Hugs, compliments, gifts of flowers, pictures of rainbows, poetry.

Mystic Knight and Magick archer were my two favorites as well, I was also partial to my dagger+shield assassin though.

So what.....you want Dragon Age to be like God of War or something? Actually, if the combat was at a slower pace and was much more tactic driven I would actually greatly enjoy it.Plaintiff wrote...

I haven't played God of War and I find claims that DA2's combat is "less tactical" than its predecesor to be completely erroneous. I don't find either game to be especially tactical, certainly tactics are not a requirement in either game.I Like Cats And wrote...

The option to employ certain kinds of tactics is available in both games, to about an equal degree (which is to say, not very much) each game just gives you different rules and tools to construct your strategy with.
And if I wanted to wade through molasses, I could head to a farm and do it for real.

I dunno if you're joking or not, but Pokemon's combat system is awesome.AppealToReason wrote...
Pokemon.
Its deceptively simple rules allow anyone to play it and enjoy it, but there's a massive amount of depth in there and people with the inclination have used the tools the game provides to create impressively clever strategies that allow them to defeat the highest-level opponents even with extremely low-level teams.

what is this? a reasonable post from plaintiff? How is it that someone who sees the merits of the pokemon games doesn't see the obvious flaws of DA2? I don't get it.

That said, I'm not sure I would like WoW's combat in a Dragon Age game. Since it's party based, I think it would be too much to deal with in juggling four characters. WoW's combat is good in the game because you only have to worry about your own abilities, and advanced AI tactics in Dragon Age can only go so far.
Another interesting style would be from Guild Wars 1 (I haven't played GW2). What I liked most about that game's combat and skill selection was that there were many abilities for each class, but you could only have eight at a time on your bar, and could only switch them when you were in a town. If you were going into an area where there were a lot of spell caster mobs you might bring mana affecting abilities, a high concentration of mob clusters might force more AoE abilities, and so forth. One of my main characters was a warrior/monk, for the sole reason of the resurrection spell, and I made use of that quite a bit, and even incorporated it into pull strategies since I knew I would be able to res my AI companion. The different skill selection really changes the way you play, and this is what I liked about it.
