I get through the menu, but when I try to play the game or use the toolset the game asks me if the program can make changes to my computer, then I get a Windows message telling me the program has stopped operating properly. If somebody could help me with this I'd be massively grateful. I got me a toolset jones! Thanx.

Does that have UAC?
Try running 1.69 patch again.
2 easy things to try.

I ran the patch againg and the same crash happened. What is UAC? The toolset seems to work, but if I try to test the program the controls are locked out.

<starting to sweat...>
Sorry I'm late... running around like crazy today :-P
I'm running NwN1 & 2 on a Win 8 machine, so I know it can be done =)
UAC is User Access Control. Basically it watches sensitive folders on your hard drive like a hawk and if anything tries to touch them it screeches "So and so is trying to change the computer! Can I stomp 'em? Huh? Can I?"
It's not a very nice and demure program. :-P
What it tends to do with older games like NwN that use their own folder on the C: drive is, uh, stop them. Which means if NwN is trying to store some temp files (which it does) UAC will try and stop it. If the toolset tries to launch a suspicious program (NwN) UAC will stop it.
What to do?
You can go into user accounts in the control panel and turn off UAC (this does open up some vulnerability for your computer). Or you can right click on the NwN programs (nwmain.exe, nwloader.exe & nwtoolset.exe at the least) and go into properties->compatibility->"Run Compatibility troubleshooter"
Generally, that should work. Let me know what happens when you try :-)
Edit: FWIW, I've turned off UAC first thing on every Win 7 & 8 machine I've set up. It simply causes more problems than it solves.

I got it to work! The compatiblity troubleshooter didn't work (on nwmain). It tried to use XP SP3. I experimented with the compatibility mode on nwmain and got the game to fire on Window Vista SP2. I don't have a User Access Control, but if I go to User Accounts I can turn the notification slider all the way down to never notify - this may amount to the same thing. I was really, really hoping I could play this game on my new machine. Thanks!

Since I am having problems too I figured I'd post here instead of creating a new thread altogether. Whenever I launch NWN in Windows 8 I get a Windows Visual C++ Runtime error. I've no idea what it's for, so I figured I'd ask. It happens with all my original installations, as well as the GOG version. Any help is appreciated.

@Soleares
Most likely you're missing Visual C++ runtime components of older versions
Even though I can't stand Windoze Hate(8), I decided to try to help you anyway.
Try downloading and installing the old VC++ v6.0 --> From Here
Also it wouldn't hurt to also downlaod and install VC++ v2008 --> From here
If that doesn't work, well I tried... there is nothing else I can suggest reguarding Win8

You're not the only one, I prefer linux myself, despite not knowing left or right when it comes to operating it properly. However, I've not had windows for years, and since this is the only way I can get Baldur's Gate to work I decided to stick with it. Ironically, Windows solved this problem for me itself. It is the first time I saw the problem solver do anything (useful) at all. So thank you for the aid, and I will return to it should it come to more problems, but apparently windows 8 can pretend to not be windows 8, and actually run my games.

are there any patches for 8 for either nwn1 or 2? there aren't likely to be I guess but does anyone know of any? even on the compatibility run it freaks out. I can't get mine (nwn1) to display on anything other than a small (probably 8x8) screen...which looks nice, but is a bummer since I just bought a laptop with a 17.3 in screen, :/
