Am just starting a NM archer runthrough. I like the idea of a Shadow based arhcer, staying in Obscure for as much as I can and dishing out Disorients for my companions.
Which brings me onto the topic of companions.
Anders (and, while I have her, Bethany) will obvs be useful for Haste and capitalising on Disorients, besides the healing. He's in.
It's tempting to go Varric and Merrill for the other two. Because they both rock. But I'm nervous about going all range. Varric would be useful for Fatiguing Fog and Chameleon's Breath keeping me Obscured, but would he be much use besides? Is an archer the one Hawke he's just not much use to? Should I swap him for Aveline to hold the aggro and dish out some staggers?
Or... Should I perhaps build Merrill as a tank? I'm not really sure how to do that, but between Rock Armour and Wrath of the Elvhen it sounds pretty plausible.
Any thoughts/suggestions?

Aveline is the best choice if you want to take advantage of Disorient with Scatter for some powerful AoE
You don't need Anders at all if you've build a tanky team. Merril with Rock armor makes a wonderful off tank. She can also use Stonefist and Spirit Bolt with Disorient.
So I would go with Aveline, Merril, and whoever else you want to take. If you insist then Avelin, Merril, and Anders make a good party. The only one that needs to be in melee is Aveline and the rest of your party can keep at long range.
On the other hand, Aveline, Merril, and Varic can work. Varic can ignore the Archery tree and focus on throwing out Obscure for you and becoming a machine gun. The Archery tree works better with a mage to take advantage of Brittle.
Of course, Isabela can throw out Obscure as well. Just have her target Aveline's target and u can have Isabela also get Fatiguing Fog. Besides, Aveline, Merril, and Isabela are a funny team.

Depends if you need a lock picker or not. I build archers 2 dex. 1 cunning so I don't open too many locks. Ander is probably better than Merrill technically. Oops, I don't play on Nightmare but Varric seems redundant and I always need a tank like Aveline. How about two warriors?

I would say Anders is worst than Merril. Thanks to her blood magic, Merril is a tank especially when focused on her primal skill. Unless you have a build that depends on Haste (beserker warrior) you don't need heal as long as you can keep threat on Aveline.

The decision point for a nightmare playthrough from a powergaming standpoint would be between Merrill and Aveline not Merrill and Anders. Anders just brings too much to the table, while he won't put out anywhere near the AOE Merrill does he brings heroic Aura, healing and most importantly, haste to the table. Most well built archers will focus on autoattack/assassination with shadow to provide the additional crit damage buffs. Haste will massively increase the entire party's single target DPS and help you take out dangerous mobs/bosses easier.
So the question is who do you want as a tank? A blood-Mage Merrill draws a lot of hate with wounds of the past and wrath of the elheven (except for nature immune mobs which are a real annoyance) and properly built she will be difficult to take down. She also does wonderful AoE damage on Nightmare when you spec her into the primal tree. A properly built Aveline will be a hate magnet and absolutely tough as nails, but won't dish out anywhere near the dps Merril does. I would experiment with both. In my experience battle with merril go faster but you have a harder time in tough battles because hate sometimes gets distributed to other party members. With Aveline battles are a bit slower but a lot more predictable.

I brought Fenris for tanking, along with Merrill and Anders.
