People claim the always online rumor has no validity because it. "Hasn't been announced" even though the rumors are rampant and all over. The odd thing about that is the Xbox itself hasn't been announced and is a rumor, and those people still take that its existence is fact. Which it is. But so is always online.
There's a difference between believing a new Xbox is coming (which is virtually a sure thing) and rumors of an always-online requirement that even if it was in place currently, may still change by launch.
I agree with you 100% that Microsoft may change it before launch. They're right now getting just a sampling of the backlash they will receive of they don't change it. However, the damage is already done bigtime...negative perception like this has never been seen before before a new console launch...with the worst timing with SimCity and an employee from Microsoft being snotty and rude and telling people expressing their view of how they don't want it and will easily go PS4 to "deal with it"...using a politician to further compound the problem.
I have no problem with people going to PS4 if it turns out Microsoft does opt for the always-online and blocked used games route and the PS4 doesn't. I just think it's premature to jump ship now. There
are reasons to adopt such a strategy, so it's not a surprise that it would be bandied around shop during system development. Developers really are restricted in what they can do not knowing if someone will be connected to the internet. In a world where internet connections vary in quality and are suddenly dropped occasionally, I just don't think they can go for it yet.
To be honest, I'm thinking I'll stick with my computer rather than jump in to a new system at launch. But who knows, maybe the new Xbox's reveal will change my mind. PS4's didn't.
