And now that game is no longer a launch-day purchase for me.
And now I'm not even going to get it.

I have to find out more before I decide one way or the other. I mean I've worked with the f2p/p2w model before. Now if this is "lol buy game then **** as you play" lol no. Wait and see for me.

You say that like they didn't have the last laugh last time around. Didn't they "win" this last console generation?ShepnTali wrote...
A rumored $500 price tag along with an uptick in game prices, PS4 included... this is getting silly and Nintendo and or another surprise console may have the last laugh this time around.

I would actually call Nintendo the losers of this generation, tbh. Sure, they peaked and kept peaking for a while, but then it sort of just tumbled down the mountain. Zelda and a bit of Mario there and the constant Wii-Fit bundles and lack of sales towards the end of their the "Wii generation" - personally, I think PS3 did the best in terms of quality in gaming and overall steadiness in terms of sales, except for the whole hacking drama, from the way I view it, they won.
Quality doesn't matter in the face of overwhelming quanity, in which case Nintendo made with a LOT of green. And the PS3 only picked up this year. Only then as its being sold in a strip down version at a loss. Sony has reported huge market losses the last few years. Nintendo on the other hand is rather healthy.
The problem here was pushing the Wii U out so soon and not modernizing it much. Came to Early in a manner, and because of that a lot of the 3rd party studios haven't done anything for the WIIU they want to see what everyone else is doing and what chipsets they will have to work with. Cross Console gaming is best done when all the products are even in some aspects.

I'm honestly confused at how Microsoft and Sony are still selling consoles at a loss. The price for manufacturing HAS to have gone down with time. Seven year old hardware has to be dirt cheap to make at this point?

Pretty much what I've read. The lack of games exclusive to the Wii U is killing it before it has a chance to sell.

LOL I like a good conspiracy. It makes life all that much more fun.
And people bailing on Microsoft will likely just move to Sony, not PC gaming. But I'm not sure for how long. It will be a matter of time before more people just have their TVs hooked wirelessly through the computers anyway, integrating their computer, gaming and TV/movie watching into the same hardware. I don't see how much longer stand-alone consoles can really last. A decade? Maybe more?
Not me. Because of the Witcher and the Witcher 2, I dabbled in PC gaming for games I'd usually play on a console. If Microsoft throws in DRM, blocks used sales, focuses too much on Kinect or any other aspect I don't like, it wouldn't be much of a leap for me anymore. I've never been a fan of Sony. All their stuff seems to break on me.

They shouldn't be at this stage. They sell at a loss at the front end, and maybe the first price drop makes it a loss or close to a loss again. But the only reason the hardware costs don't become negligble at the end is because of some kind of proprietary deal they may have with the manufacturers of certain parts - which would be dumb on the part of MS and Sony.

The manufacturing process may be faster, and hence cost less, but other manufacturing and overhead costs continue to rise.

We've heard from other sources that Microsoft is not where they want to be at this point in the pre-launch development of Durango. A reliable source—one who was not part of our reporting about the Respawn game—tells us that Microsoft is as much as six months behind in producing content for the new console, despite an expected late-2013 launch. Another tells us that Microsoft recently cancelled several internal next-gen projects because they were not coming together as hoped. These sources have told us that, comparatively, Sony is in better shape and further along with hardware and software development for PlayStation 4.
We'd also heard from an industry insider that Microsoft was aggressively trying to sign exclusive games for Durango. Given the lack of internal development at Microsoft—their internal studios, while talented, are outnumbered by those of Sony and Nintendo—and given some of the apparent recent stumbles and slowdowns internally, signing an exclusive Respawn-EA game would suit the Durango quite well.

Pretty much this. The chipsets and hardware should be cheaper, but the patent deals might be a problem in Sonys case Blu-ray, which it hasn't gone down all that much. And then the add-on's, outsourcing, etc etc. Also fixed typo's in my above post was in a rush when I typed it so Lose is Loss, etc, etc

It seems the big problem is most of the Consoles are selling during the sales only so they arn't recouping first time production costs...which is a big problem with the market economy today.
From Cars to Doughnuts, they make more **** than they ever sell, up the price, then everyone all around ****es.

People wet their pants over the difficulty of Dark Souls, but it's such an exception. Most games on those consoles are becoming wanna be Hollywood blockbuster, cakewalk fluff pieces. And truthfully, I enjoy many of them. But the perception that Nintendo is childish is somewhat flawed. Their variety is just wider than what one would normally think.
The Wii U is kind of in the same position as the PS3 was early on, but Sony made a comeback as the underdog this round and is poised to take the lead again next gen. To me, this may be the most interesting console war to watch since Sega vs Nintendo. There seems to be more variation between the consoles coming up, then current gen.

Should be noted whats seen as the most scary game ever made was on the Nintendo as well. (Game Cube. You can guess the game I'm sure)
There are a few. If you're talking about exclusives, I'm sure you're referring to Eternal Darkness.

Interesting. I always thought it was common knowledge that the Xbox 360 won this generation, just as it was common knowledge that the PS2 won the previous generation. Nintendo hasn't had a winner since the N64. The Wii seemed to be fad that wore off within a few years. And now they've doubled down on it.

Even if the always online thing is true, I don't think microsoft will say it directly...they will probably dance around it or not even mention it.
Considering how rampant speculation has been on the issue, them not addressing it is basically the same as saying it outright. In my mind, if they aren't requiring always-online, they would have no reason not to say it, and all the reasons in the world to say it.

Nintendo did not lose this generation.
Wii sold 99.36 million units
360 sold 75.32 million units
PS3 sold 74.35 million units
Nintendo dominated this generation.

that is not measured in console sales but in sales of games (excluding used), peripherals, etc.
