If those wikipedia figures are correct, it seems you are right.  Atleast so far as physical sales go.

the true measure of a console's success is profit for the manufacturer
that is not measured in console sales but in sales of games (excluding used), peripherals, etc.

Ok, top selling games for each console

Wii- Wii Sports 81.21 million copies sold
PS3- Modern Warfare 3 12.69 million copies sold
360- Kinect Adventures 19.98 million copies sold

Those examples do you no favours.  A system may have one or two hot items, and still get blown away in terms of overall game sales.

I've checked up the estimated total sales in USA for each console to the end of 2012
X360 is ahead with 369 million
Wii is second with 334 million
PS3 is last with 208 million
of course this years games sales will push Wii down
Other countries will have different reults (so X360 games won't have so many sales in Japan)
so the Wii may be the overall winner

Is that supposed to be units sold or money? Seems way too high for the former and way too low for the latter

You're right,  it's neither.  There are about 140 million 360's and PS3's sold in this generation,  and the total revenue for consoles for 2012 was 13.6 billion.  I suppose it might be total number of games sold,  but even then,  the math is *way* off.

"software units" i.e. games

(this is from console launch to end of 2012 so X360 had an extra year of sales)
figures taken from Gamasutra report by Matt Matthews (Jan 22,2013) which I believe are retail estimates from the NPD group

I remain skeptical too. It's the $10-15 a month subscription for 2 years contract that has rustled my jimmies. At the moment, £40 a year, pfffft. that's less than £3.50 a month. I find more spare change than that in my coat pockets.

$15 a month? Haha, fuk that. I'm jumping ship.

Will the PS4 charge for online? I like what the PS3 are doing currently. Subcription with full free games and no subscription.

Hard to say right now. I'm hoping they'll stick to their more customer friendly approach for the PS4.

I would actually call Nintendo the losers of this generation, tbh. Sure, they peaked and kept peaking for a while, but then it sort of just tumbled down the mountain. Zelda and a bit of Mario there and the constant Wii-Fit bundles and lack of sales towards the end of their the "Wii generation" - personally, I think PS3 did the best in terms of quality in gaming and overall steadiness in terms of sales, except for the whole hacking drama, from the way I view it, they won.

Interesting.  I always thought it was common knowledge that the Xbox 360 won this generation, just as it was common knowledge that the PS2 won the previous generation.  Nintendo hasn't had a winner since the N64.  The Wii seemed to be fad that wore off within a few years.  And now they've doubled down on it.

As I stated, they hit a huge peak in the beginning, now show me the consistency of their "sales" till the end of this year.  It wasn't a steady line and was tumbling, from what I remember.

And by dominating, you mean sales?  I guess Wii-fit determines the quality of their product, hahaha.

/sarcasm.

So why have you now made two threads about it? I'm pretty sure Microsoft are ok with it, it's you that seems to have an issue dealing with it. You seem to have this bizarre need to shout down something that we have no details on at all and build up the PS4 which we also don't know much about. It's almost as if you have buyers remorse for something you haven't even bought yet.

I'm not even defending Microsoft, I haven't decided what if any console I'll be getting. But would it not make sense to actually find out what you're shouting about before grabbing a megaphone?

There's really no way to quantify what a winner is unless the other consoles Dreamcasted.

What Nintendo pulls off is the most impressive of any of them. Especially considering I don't remember seeing a Wii commercial since WiiFit was all the rage. Yet I still see 500 Xbox commercials a day, and don't watch much TV at all.

It wasn't N64, it was PS1. Sony's "won" twice.

Something to keep in mind is part of the reason the PS2, Wii, and DS sold so well, is they were very hacker and mod friendly.

It must be where I live or something.  Everyone I knew had an N64, and even when they also had a PS1, they much preferred the N64.  It's tighter between the 360 and the PS3,  but the 360 still wins in my part of the world.

Well, the reveal is just around the corner and I'm getting worried.  They really seem to be hyping kinect, which makes it seem like it'll be paramount at the reveal.  They better have something amazing in store for it.  Even if the damn thing can capture movement perfectly, I'm still not going to be interested in it.

Off the top of my head, could Microsoft try to make a deal with EA for exclusivity, particularly now that EA is set to release new SW titles?

It's amazing because this is actually Microsoft's prime product at the moment. The product that is keeping them relevant, maybe blackberry should come up with a console? haha
